In this KZfaq video, Jeff McCosker discusses the different widths of Onewheel hubs and how they affect the ride. He explains that narrower hubs can make the tire more nimble and playful, but sacrifices stability. On the other hand, wider hubs offer more stability but can limit maneuverability. McCosker shares his experiences testing different hub widths and recommends a 155mm width as the best compromise between stability and nimbleness. He also mentions the possibility of using spacers to customize the hub width further.
Highlights
🎥 Jeff McCosker discusses the width of Onewheel hubs and their impact on the ride.
🏄 Narrower hubs make the tire more nimble and playful, but less stable.
🚀 Wider hubs offer more stability but limit maneuverability.
👍 155mm hub width is recommended as a balance between stability and nimbleness.
🛠️ Spacers can be used to customize the hub width further.

What a great time to be alive~!~So much fun coming our way...truly thankful for all the work you guys are doing, and for videos like this that let us know what you are thinking. What I'd like as a builder, and I know you touched on this in a video about the S, is more specs on the interior of the hub. Da magnets baby, since that's where the flux happens. As always ride on my friends. . .

I run a local Stoke Shop and use this same concept as a selling point for Float Life Savers. Not just wheel protection but gives your tire a little more shoulder/crown to ride on too for better carving. I noticed this especially when trying to fit a Maxxis 6.5 tire on my GT. I fixed the rubbing then later on installed Float Life Savers. That’s when the rubbing returned due to the extra overall diameter the tire gained. Imagine Float Life Savers that came with different size (width) inside lips. You could choose how much narrower you want it to be from bead to bead depending on what kind of ride you’re going for.

I would love to buy one! but what about compatibility? I have a Pint, was also looking to get a pint X and get the current generation MTE, But on your site , it says it was only compatible with XRs/GTs. Asked around, no one really knew if they were pint/pint x compatible. Are the production runs going to be compatible with Onewheels whole line-up or just GT/XR?

Thanks for the deep dive on the hubs. Learned a lot. So in a perfect world where there's plenty of tires available for each hub size, which hub size (5" or 6") provides the best mix of stability and nimbleness and suitability for street and trail, in your opinion? Also, is TFL planning to a make a new 6" hub for the GT?

Do the 5" MTE hubs increase motor temperatures, all other things equal? If so, by about how much? Do we need to plan for cold ones (5" hub version), or maybe power blocks? I asked a similar question on another 5" MTE clip, hoping you guys will respond here - full transparency on this please.

@@TheFloatLife Not a definitive answer, but it is something. I'm sure other customers are wondering about this. It would be helpful if you did some testing and could report the results in another clip or maybe on your website so people know what to expect with this hub. The concern is due to a lot less metal surface area compared with the stock hub which already has some overheating issues, but perhaps there are other offsetting factors such as surface coating etc. More clarity may alleviate concerns. Thanks.
@nicoaleman
@nicoaleman 8 ай бұрын
@@Alex-ge6fo It's hard to do a controlled test, but I wouldn't expect any significant thermal differences, at least when comparing same magnet strength. I did see potential slight benefits when doing two similar trail rides between stock XR hub and my N52 MTE hub (VESC), but I'd consider it within the margin of error, so huge grain of salt. I've seen no evidence of worse temps though, in my testing at least.

Wait wait wait wait wait. So your saying, the tire, effects the ride of the board? And it’s not necessarily the hub, but also the tire change when you switch hubs? Diameter of the tire can effect torque feel? Pffffft. You just blew the minds of like 90% of people that switched hubs😂🤣.

Do you rock lifesavers on your 155? ....or is there another lifesaver solution coming for this 155 that doesn't need snapping on over the rim?. ...also just to check, will the lifesavers on the 165 bring the inner width back in to 155, or a bit over?
@nicoaleman
@nicoaleman 8 ай бұрын
Maybe they have plans, but for now, no lifesavers exist for 5" hub. The smaller hub means you're going to be hitting your rim MUCH less (if ever), and when you do, not only will much of the impact force usually be absorbed by the time it reaches your hub, but the hub itself should also be significantly more durable than a stock hub. So it generally shouldn't really be necessary to run life savers, at least I'd imagine so
@Alex-ge6fo
@Alex-ge6fo 8 ай бұрын
@@nicoaleman Totally agree, more tire/air cushion + smaller diameter rims are stronger. Also look how thick the lips are on those things which makes it even stronger. I think it is extremely unlikely unless you are running super low tire pressure with big drops on sharp edges, and if you are able to impact your 5" rim enough to damage it, you are probably getting bounced off the board.

Hi TfL team. Don't know if you'll read but I have a question. During the summer some of my friends had motor overheating issues with an XR conversion to vesc. Will this issue be worse with a smaller hub ? Or maybe you plan on releasing cold ones for XR 🙃
