I would say when you first get a onewheel, the riding should be limited to about 2-3, 15 to 30 minute blocks per day until those muscles are built up. Other than that, you’re doing great! I started to get longer ride confidence after about 200 miles on my pint. Now I’m at almost 1400 miles since March and loving it! Welcome to the float life!

I definitely agree with that. I’ve gotten my muscles built up from mountain biking so I’ll see how my endurance is once I receive my GT

That is what I had in mind to keep under 5 mph, but I kept speeding up (this is obviously my fault), but since this fall I have learned and not only build up muscles ,but my confidence as I take it easy out there. Thanks for the tips and for stopping by!

To be clear, this video is really for new riders, not the "know it all" experts that get triggered (especially those in Facebook groups 🤣) by creators like myself that take the time to make these videos! I hope you found some value in this video, if you did help me out with a "Thumbs Ups/Like" when we're able to share tips and experiences on how to ride. Thanks!

Loosen up a little. You catch wobbles because you’re stiff and nervous. Loosen up. Learn to carve. When you’re carving you’re just naturally going to keep loose. You won’t catch wobbles while carving, or even when knowing how to carve. Also, lean back! The board isn’t going to speed up without you telling it too. On your nosedive clip we can clearly see that your body is leaned WAY forward, in other words telling the board to accelerate. Don’t be scared to lean back. I mean lean back hard. Try to touch the rear of the board to the ground. So many people are scared to actually lean back on the pint for some reason. You’re not going to fall off the board, the board will slow down and you’ll stay right where you are. Keep at it man, you got this!

Thank John! Yeah I completely had my weight shifted towards the front. I am now learning how to keep it over the wheel and using my hips more to shift weight back and forth as needed. I have to remember to carve more too. Thanks again!

@@marlonptyreviews any time man! If you’re ever speeding up and feel like you’re losing control over the momentum of the board, remember to just set your body back. Almost exactly like doing a trust fall. Just trust the board and lean your body back. The board will catch you, I promise! You’re doing great. Pretty soon you’ll be shredding, and leisurely floating around will be second nature. Exploring new areas on a Onewheel is a special kind of fun. Enjoy it man! Oh, and always wear a helmet. There have been a few fatalities, always due to no helmet. Stay safe!

Thanks for the honesty and tips. I really feel for your bumps and bruises. I recently started riding my pint x and my tip is take it slower than normal. I'm 47 years old and I just don't have the testosterone and balls to go full blast anymore. I make my rides a purposeful learning event such as riding on road and back to the sidewalk back and forth back and forth till I feel comfortable. I also practice just going slow. I practice dismounting correctly feeling what the board is going to do over and over again. I guess you can call it baby steps. Pacific X is my favorite riding mode right now. The riding modes higher than Pacific X feels jittery where it causes instability. But the instability is a good thing in my opinion because it causes better maneuvering. Take care and stay safe!

Thanks Tone! I'm right there with ya (46) I recently got back to riding and that's exactly what I have been doing, going slow, taking it easy and learning how to control this board better at lower speeds. I never meant to speed in this video, but it happened and I learned the hard way. I have since switched to Pacific X as well and feels much better. I am slowly gaining my confidence! I appreciate you stopping by my channel!

I think these were some great beginner tips. Sorry to hear that you had to learn the hard way, but glad that you were okay in the end and I think everyone can learn from your experience. To top up on your comments about foot fatigue, yes it's real and yes it will make riding the board actually somewhat dangerous but it's not only strength that you need to gain, it's literally comfort, confidence and a relaxed approach to riding. The "lighter" you are on the board and the more you stop fighting the board and start to flow with it (similar to snowboarding or surfing) the less tired and fatigued your feet and legs will become over time. My advice and like others have basically said is take your time now man, no need to push the limits of the board. I actually rarely hit pushback on my regular Pint because I'd rather not push myself that hard. I just cruise at a pace that feels comfortable for me and that has some potential for me to run out if I were to bail.

Hey Man..like your video, I just got my PintX 3 weeks ago for my 67th birthday, I had ridden a unicycle back in the day, so I had an idea about the balance thing and was riding it through the house in 5min. and got up to 6mph inside. And yes I had the helmet on in the house and glad I did!!! Went outside and through the grass and driveway and up and down the street. Did about 1 mile that first day and the thighs were quite sore for a couple days. I've only got it up to 9.7mph max so far with a total of 4+ miles. I've ordered a Burris treaded tire, they say it is a flatter profile than the stock one, which will mean better stability. Also for me on my streets and cul-de-sacs there is a considerable crown in the center that really affects the way the board wants to turn. toe side turns seem easier for me but I really slow down when turning. It just feels so great riding this and all is right with the world, but it really takes focus and sometimes it's hard to look around or talk to someone while going down the road. Keep up the practice...

On your unicycle, at least you knew that you were responsible for maintaning your balance. But the onewheel's electronics can let you down especially if you don't fully understand the limitations.

OoohI feel your pain! My Pint has become my main form of Inner City transport for about a year and a half. I have nose dived three times, one of which was exactly the same chest and rib crushing impact that happened to you. These nose dives all happened in the space of a week in my first month and have not happened since then. The first crucial mistake many beginners make is getting to cocky and confident when they first crack the first stage of riding which is attaining good balance and decent control over the board. The problem is that they start pushing the speed limits before they have learned the second and most important stage, that being understanding how the motor works in relation to speed, inclines, uneven terrain, battery drainage and balance to speed ratios and finally the all important understanding how to control pushback! A tip that has worked for me throughout the years from learning ice skating, inlines and now One wheeling is to buy yourself some slalom cones or plastic mugs and find yourself a large empty space like a parking lot or the park, then set yourself a straight slalom course to begin with of ten or more cones and space them three feet apart to begin with and try to make it through to the last cone and turning around without stopping and make it back to the beginning. This exercise helps you learn to turn with control both heel side and toe side and helps your braking technique when having to take the last cone and set yourself up for a tight turn back into returning for the next from last cone. With practice you will get faster and be more precise in your control over your board. When it has become too easy shorten the distance. The next stage is set yourself a figure of eight with your cones (you will need at least twenty) and learn it both directions, toe side and heel side. When you go back on the streets you will find that you understand your board a lot better and you will have finer control of it in many situations. The ultimate challenge is to practice all this switch (ie: with your wrong leading foot which is like going backwards), when you reach that stage you are ready to buy the GT (as I have done)! 😂 Good advice about the protective gear. I always wear a skate helmet but also invested in a full face Bell Air helmet for more daring rides. The one thing that you should have done was buy protective stuff for your board! Before I even rode mine I tricked mine out with every protective accessory on the market, so the original board is like new! Welcome to the community and give it time to build up your skills. The more you ride the more you will learn how to stay safe. 🙏🏾

Solid lessons learned. Good to share what you were thinking for newer folks. Always dress for the slide… Broke a rib on my Pint about 10 days into riding, just like that, but it wasn’t enough to keep me off the board for long. Be wary, overconfidence is what gets most folks. Right when you think it’s all dialed in… it’ll bite ya. Respect that Always be carving (ABC), serpentine along to reduce foot fatigue that was a great tip to learn early on, and take breaks to rest your legs as you develop the muscle memory to float for longer. Even jumping off and walking a few steps around for 30 seconds will help. Again, awesome that you’re sharing your thinking. Foot position looked fine. I’m a bigger guy, and got better control with the front foot closer to the wheel, and back foot about mid pad, both angled forward like you’re doing. Find whats balanced and comfortable for you to. Switched up to a GT this last month, got about 50mi under the bet, with no issues. Still learning the newSled. But DEFINITELY a Quality upgrade for me, loving every mile. It’s a game changer for my 6’2”, 240lb a$$. Lessons on my Pint the last few hundred miles got me here, and it’s got the scratches to prove it. Wears them proudly, it matches well with the shit eating grin I wear as I roll along.

I don't think you really nose dived, it looks like you may have just lost control fighting against the push back but maybe I'm wrong. Pacific X is a pretty good profile, you won't get push back so soon as you would with Redwood. Find a nice soft grassy area and practice bailing off your board, it's better to bail early if things go south. Go to a nice open parking lot and do figure eights to practice turning. Jake Leary has some awesome tutorials that helped me. Take it slow, work your way up to longer rides and remember onewheels really aren't about going fast, just cruise.

What's up Greg, no man trust me, they were nosedives! LOL bro it sucked big time! Problem is I had two in one day and the second one is the one that got my a$$ really good. But yeah definitely taking it slower and practicing more, confidence is building up. Still trying to figure out foot placement especially my back foot. Thanks for the tips!

Good video man. I ride a OG pint and ate it bad. Snapped my collar bone good and clean. This was 3 weeks into constant riding daily. I got over confident and was done for. Mine happened while going up hill, blasting it. I got push back for all of maybe a second tops and then total cutout. I had 8% battery left. Afterwards while learning what I did wrong, the most sense was the board had just enough power for push back (which requires energy) but that was it, I ate it at 22.6mph. Now, once I hit 50%, I chill and lower my speed and such in relation to the percentage drop past 50. Around 10% I ride slow enough that if I do nose dive, I know I can run it out. Safe riding man, glad your sticking with it. I did too collar bone or not.

I would practice in grass for a bit as well. That really helped me get better at keeping control of the board when it wobbles over dips and bumps. If you’re solid on bumpy grass you should be fine on asphalt/concrete. And get really good at stopping quickly, look up the quick stop method. You’re taking all these falls like a champ tho, props man!

Shoes are very important. If the soles of your shoes are too "soft" the footpad sensors might not recognize them and you can get some issues launching. Not just the launch of shame either, but you can start to roll and then the board dies and you can do a low speed nose dive that you're just not ready for.

Another tip, stop thinking about your feet. Your foot placement really isn’t that critical. When you want to slow down, do a “trust fall” motion. Simply just lay your body back like you’re starting a trust fall. Don’t try to push down on your rear foot, that’s not the move. Simply just shift your body BEHIND the centerline of the wheel. Hope this helps.
@Headywon
@Headywon 2 жыл бұрын
Riding with your feet facing forwards is dangerous, it lowers your balance (although it can _feel_ more comfortable, especially for beginners) and makes you more vulnerable to sudden nosedives. Riding in a wider stance helps with stability but can make it more difficult to turn. Once your battery hits 50% the power output becomes noticeably limited, and at 25% it can be really sketchy (both my nosedives happened at over 20mph at less than 25% battery). Riding at a higher tire pressure has helped me a lot as well, but I have an XR with a stock Vega (changing to the new smaller Vega soon) and bumping up the pressure on a stock Pint might make it too squirrelly for most people. Don't feel bad about getting injured, I broke my tailbone twice in the first month of riding 🤣🍻

I know this video is a couple months old and you probably got it down now but something I found helps is not to just lean back to slow down. I kept feeling like I was leaning back but wasn't slowing down very fast and its kinda freaky when your leaning back but still accelerating. I found that even without leaning back just push your rear foot straight down while taking some weight off the front wheel will tilt it back and slow down super fast. At slow speed push the back down hard enough to make the tail drag for a second. Thats how I slow down but without actually dragging the tail, the motion of pushing the rear down is the same though. For new people spend some time just accelerating and slowing down fast. I spent my first couple days just speeding up and slowing down just to make sure I could slow down asap if need be.

Dude I have about 100 miles between my old XR and my new GT (so I'm also very new). I have taken some nasty falls, too, but I love learning and making my riding improve every time I get on the board. I loved this video! Watching us new riders eat it and learn from it is one of my favorite things. I ran into a guy who rides with his 6yo son and he made his son do 100 miles on grass in a nearby park before he let him ride on pavement, and he made him practice jumping off the board and running with it for hours to build the muscle memory on how to bail on your board if you need to. I thought those were great tips that I will implement myself! Enjoy your board, man, and float on!

Don't buy into starting out with 10, 15, 20, etc minute rides. Just warm up before you take off with circles and figure eights (do them switch as well). Start in Redwood, and stay there for about 75 miles (I waited till 90 before moving to Pacific). Make sure you ride with purpose, no distractions, no earbuds. Take long trips for an hour or more. Hard pavement. Save off-road for later. Don't be a speed demon. If you're feet are tired, stop, take off your shoes and rub each foot for about 10 seconds with the palm of your wrist protector. Don't forget about the toes. Get the blood flowing. The key for the shoe, is to have thick or double socks. Take long rides, just take fewer and fewer breaks as your balance and muscles develop. This way you'll be on your board longer, so you will be proficient quicker. On your way back, if you have more juice run some more patterns in the road (or parking lot). Good luck.

You're riding wobbly there, the instability that can cause a nosedive at any time and also the cause of quickly getting fatigued(foot and body). The safest way to ride it with the best stability (no speed wobble) and range is to ride it "backwards" (sensor side at the rear). As a new rider, the Skyline mode will be easier and firmer but with less range.

You'll get it! Just my thoughts from the video cause I cant see your upper half. so I have to go with what I think may be some of the issues. is first off from what I can tell is you need to relax and be more bouncy in the knees. Also it seems like you may be focusing your body and your weight towards the front. My suggestion is try to center your waist directly over the wheel and your upper body kinda leaned towards the rear and majority of your weight should be towards the back. Also dont think just do. it will start to feel like part of your body.

I noticed when just watching tot he 4:04, when the pushback happens you seem to try to lean your body forward. This means you are putting more pressure on your front foot than your back trying to fight against the pushback. (Which is why it never slows down). Instead, shift the weight primarily to your back foot and you should start slowing down. The board will then notice and level back out. Basicly think of it like walking up an incline. You tend to lean forward for balance. However instead of leaving forward, just stay level with the incline and you should be better

First of all thank you for sharing. I could feel your pain (been there). Your biggest mistake was the long ride (Fatigue in your legs) . I feel that the Pint is too small for adults. You need an plus,XR or a GT if you're a average size adults. The one wheel is a lot of fun but it will kill you. The one wheel should start beeping when it does the pushback like the Segway did. Never had a nose dive on my Segway.

Thank you! I totally agree, I don't recommend newbies going on long rides. I believe I mentioned that in this video, but yeah that would be a nice feature to have (beeping) or some other way aside to get notified. What setting are were you riding on? I have a PintX and have been riding for a month but I haven’t experienced push back yet, and it seemed like your board was tilted back pretty significant so I’m curious how you felt that pushback - meaning my board is leaning forward much more and I don’t get pushback but maybe that has to do with the setting you are riding on- I’m riding pacific right now and about to move up
@marlonptyreviews
@marlonptyreviews 2 жыл бұрын
Anthony, on my first nosedive I was on Redwood and the entire time I felt the nose being tilted up a bit. The problem I encountered was that I never felt the push back, at least I didn't know that's what was going on until I flew off! I thought when the board gave you push back you'd really feel it and that it where I was wrong. Later on I switched to Pacific X and the board felt much better and the nose was as tilted, but I ended up flying off a second time hitting up 21 mph. Since then I've kept riding Pacific X and I have learned to keep the speed down and control everything much better. I never want to experience another nosedive, I was banged up pretty bad for a while! Just keep in mind Speed Push Back will kick in when you are pushing the boards limits, maybe you haven't pushed it too much and that is a good thing!
@Joe_Andrus
@Joe_Andrus 2 жыл бұрын
Pint pushback for clarity is quite obvious, and actually a complaint of many XR riders who own Pints. They actually think it's too much! I think it's just right to be honest. You'll know because the board will literally surge the nose upwards and you'll be riding like a sea Captain Morgan. Whereas the typical acceleration position would be somewhat nose down. In this video it seems the creator had some issues with understanding how to control his speed.

*...... 14 miles on a pintX for a 200lb dude is a huge red flag to me !* You were seriously low on battery voltage, which will trigger a pushback/nosedive scenario. The board needs VOLTAGE and TORQUE to keep the nose UP. Sorry for your pain.... we can all learn from this content. 🙏🏼 "Pushback" is obviously a vague notion for a new rider, and there is only ONE youtuber out there who can explain the physics in laymans terms.

Brother there is nothing wrong with you this is a new product. You can do what you were first doing with the XR and nothing would happen. You would feel push back but a slight lean to the rear and it immediately slows down. Looks like this pint X is having lots of flukes. That's what happens when you try to reinvent the wheel.
@johnd9357
@johnd9357 2 жыл бұрын
This isn’t a fluke with the pint X. People have been doing this same thing on the OG pint since it came out. Literally this exact same thing. Nose comes up, they freak out thinking they’re going to fall off the back, so they lean forward. They don’t realize they’re leaning forward, but the board does and they start accelerating. Now they’re panicking because they’re “accelerating for no reason” and then they nosedive. All people need to do is trust the board, and lean back. Put your weight on your rear foot. ALL of your weight. It’s that simple, but when you first start learning the board there’s a lot of new information coming at you very quickly. There’s nothing wrong with his board. There’s nothing wrong with his riding. It’s just that he’s a new rider getting used to a new skill. Your threshold for problem solving when new is basically zero. He will get more miles, get more comfortable, and he will wonder how he ever felt so uneasy on the board.

Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE you're not a goofy rider? Your "stance" looks like you're literally trying to climb around to the opposite side of the board. I don't do board sports as a rule, but, after a week of trying to ride an OW regular-style and constantly running up against some obstacle in terms of ride and comfort, and, even though I'm a right-handed guy...I finally made the conscious choice to switch to goofy and have never looked back.
