Everything in mind is learnt. Learning is the essential nature of mind. Good & evil are merely judgements of discriminating mind. Realizing Constancy results from returning to the source in stillness. Learning & Realizing Constancy is the Way of Nature. Constancy is seeing equality, which is Compassion.

Its like Zhuangzi's bit about the empty boat floating down the river, because nobody is in it, the man does not get angry, he just deals with it the correct way. If there was a man in it, he would shout and curse the man. This teaching shows how if you believe evil deeds are done by evil people, you are wrong. Evil deeds can be done by good people, who can be shown the right way.

A big part of the problem is Takers who are are self-focused and only help others strategically, when the benefits to themselves outweigh the personal costs. In the words of Adam Grant: “Takers have a distinctive signature: they like to get more than they give. They tilt reciprocity in their own favor, putting their own interests ahead of others' needs.”

A man who is not comfortable with his own darkness, wont even recognize it in himself. A man who is compassionate towards his own darkness, can be compassionate to those who commit evil deeds, and he is the solution to the wrongdoing, because hatred cannot banish hatred. Punishment and Reward are the lowest form of learning. It is better to learn from the ancients, rest on the laurels of your wise ancestors, don't try to reinvent the wheel.

If we are naturally good why do we since birth have to be taught to be selfless? Why do we not have to be taught to be selfish? Why do we tend toward evil instead of good?

I whole-heartedly disagree with a statement that goes "who can say what is right or wrong" or "what was wrong 10 years ago is now right". This might as well be called learned ignorance. We have a very clear understanding of what is right and what is wrong. We were simply trained to ignore this understanding to some degree in modern society because our society is built on wrong. You are allowed to do what ever you want, as long as you do not steal away from others. Whether it is freedom or property. That includes that we do not harm others in body or mind. We are not allowed to take away (conceal) insight or truth from others. Simply put, do not steal. One person's freedom ends where another's freedom begins. For overlap there is cooperation. If we commit wrong, we shall receive wrong. Simple as that. Whether we judge right or wrong as good or bad has nothing to do with the simple universal set of rules. In order to transcend good or evil (right and wrong), I believe, it is first necessary to understand right from wrong and good from evil. Transcendence is not equal to ignorance. In my opinion, the live we experience reflects the sum of rights and wrongs we committed throughout our existence.

I’m trying to wrap my head around this because we know to steal from our parents is bad, we know to rape is bad. That seems pretty absolute to me.
