The worst thing is that I'm pretty sure they didn't even keep the color schemes of those who genuinely had to EARN their berets exclusive to their respective types of troops. during color guard practice our colonel was showing us how our berets should look, his was perfect and someone asked "how did he get it to look like that?" I said "it's because he's bald" everyone laughed then it got quiet quick, he slowly walked over to me, leaned towards me and said "that was a good joke" then we contiuned practice.

We used balaclavas at fort wainwright, folded into a beanie when it turned ECWCS season. We never ever got to wear the fleece cap, except maybe in the field sometimes. Even when doing pt it was balaclava.

I wasn't enlisted during beret time but my first unit (11 ACR) was allowed to wear them for a few years during Vietnam. I'm not sure of the story behind that. The only time we could wear the wool cap outside of PT was in the motor pool. You always kept one really good patrol cap for guard duty and it was starched/sized and blocked. The ones for the regular duty day I washed 3-4 times without wearing, rolled them up and let them dry. The only other headgear we were authorized to wear was your Cavalry Stetson if you earned your spurs as we didn't have a regimental event for the dress cap unless you were an officer.

Being able to wear a stetson and spurs even if you weren't a 19d/19a made for a very tight knit unit. Unless you were a turd of a soldier.

My friend's dad when I was growing up was/is a Marine and he found a juice pitcher that fit his cover perfectly. Not too tight, not too loose, so that he could starch and iron that MF'er perfect and sharp as a knife. I will never forget that as long as I live. Probably 35 years ago and I still think about that when I see a Marine...

OK, another Cadet from a long distant past. I was a cadet in the late 1970's and was in CAP until I went active duty. In those days we wore the old OD's with the OD baseball cap. Until I went to the Blue Beret encampment.

I think the U.S. Army should make the tan fleece cap the primary winter headgear and worn between the dates of 1 October to 1 April. They should have the rank Velcro on the front and have the name tape sewn in the back, similar to the patrol cap. The same rule applies to the black PT fleece cap

Oh yeah. We just want to keep dishonoring our Ranger Regiments. 🖕 They were forced to endure one theft of a unit symbol of pride and tradition, and you think it's a good idea to force them to give up that new beret to all the douche bags who haven't earned that level. Civilians just clearly do not understand their military any longer.

I wore a black hat back when no one else did. There were black, green, red and blue, everyone else wore a green ball cap. 1 Cav, the First Horse.

I am known as the guy who always has the fleece cap, it could be 90° out but so long as no one tells me I need to get rid of it it is going to be on my head whether I am shaved bald or letting my hair grow out again The fleece cap is king, side note that if I'm wearing it my juniors are find a way it and if someone has a problem they can come see me

I have a huge head and any headwear is tough to source let alone wear. I've never served, but I rocked an ACH when I was airsofting and that was awesome
