In 2011 I made a video about this kind of weapon and it's first test ( • RailGun Cannon Fire Test ). Today, after some years, we can FINALLY see the quite complete development!
The Electromagnetic Railgun it's an awesome gun that can fire up to mach 7 shells. The U.S. want's to implement this weapon on their ships. In this video you can find a collection of the tests from 2008 until now :)

One of my brothers used to make rail guns of sorts back in the 70's. he took one of mom's used thread spools made of Styrofoam and pressed two needles in it spaced to go into a wall outlet. when he plugged it in one of the needles would fly out really fast across the room. Years ahead of his time and too inexpensive for government!

I wonder if what you're seeing in the flash is the result of friction produced when the projectile is accelerated from 0 to 'holy cow' in half a nanosecond. That has to produce a lot of energy. It's funny to see them using FSDS (sabots) like we did on our 105mm main gun rounds in our ancient M60 tanks when I crewed on them. If it works, it works.

I actually read elsewhere in the comments that they use some sort of liquid aluminum to lubricate the projectile on its way out of the barrel and that is what is burning and creating the fireable

While Hollywood's one in that Transformers movie was visually cool, IMO the real ones are way, way more frightening. The amount of energy in that projectile is awe-inspiring. The 2008 test was pumping 10.64 megajoules, with a muzzle velocity of over 8270 FPS (remember, a mile is only 5280'). Very glad indeed it isn't pointed at me. :)

Mmm. In the 1980s, when I was at school, we were talking about these and gauss rifles as being plausible future weapons tech. I'm 46 years old. Railguns have gone from being an idea with some experimental work, to being a series of enormously unwieldy test rigs with improving performance in each iteration. I'm not convinced I'll see railguns in active military service before I die.

Thanks for making this. I haven't kept track of the progress. This could make battleships relevant again. Even with everything that was there to make that last one work, it took up much less space then the equipment used on the 16-inch guns on the Iowa-class battleships. And then there's the fact that individual rounds are not explosive and are so much smaller. Simply Amazing. A Navy Vet.

@@bruzote you just don't get it. We wouldn't need those large 16 inch guns. A new class of BB could easily be designed around the rail gun system and a nuclear power plant. I can easily envision a ship with four main turrets with four cannon each. They wouldn't be lobbing the munitions of the past. They would be firing rounds that weigh no more than 25Kg super sonic speeds and no explosives. The velocity of that railgun is 2400 meters per second. A 25Kg round would hit the target releasing the equivalent of 72 sticks of dynamite at the point of impact. Think about that. Your lack of imagination and vision is quite sad.

I remember in it's early stages, that they couldn't even develop a projectile strong enough to withstand the power of the energy used to shoot it. It would just break up. They finally have and will improve on it with further experiments. As you have noted in the video, the technical aspects of this gun are in their early stages, very complicated and would be too big to install on a ship or ground use just as the early laser technology and nuclear bombs had to be miniaturized for it's present use. Also what they're not telling you is, that once it's improved, it can hit a missile, plane or satellite seconds. Much faster than any rocket technology anywhere.

I designed and built a rail gun many years, 14 I think, ago very similar to this in technology and theory, but on a small scale of three feet long. Used carbon brushes on the projectile which burned up rapidly. Had to use two car batteries for power source. It did well as an experiment. Would send a 1.5 ounce rod about 40 feet. However, the 'barrel was self destructive due to the current flow. I used copper conductors which had to be cleaned between firings or would fail to conduct. This was just a hobby experiment. I thought feasible but only with technology I did not have. It was fun. Simple concept, but required current is very high.

The G-forces are overwhelming. Any complex mechanical object, let alone living organism would be jellied upon launch. These could be used to launch cannisters of fuel, water, air, and the like, however, and that would be very useful indeed.

As a former artillery officer I can tell you that this has a very limited use without an explosive charge. With standard artillery the burst radius is about 50 meters for 155mm rounds. If this railgun can't shoot an explosive round it will have to hit the target every time which isn't what artillery does unless it can see the target directly in front of it. Therefore, it is the equivalent of a tank round which can hit a target at further distances.

So the flames and maybe the noise makes sense but what about the smoke? To me that seems like they are using gunpowder to assist in some way. The use of Gunpowder would explain the short barrel as well. As a slightly longer barrel would be required to have enough penetrating speed to do what a rail gun is needed to do as it would be simple to add more or better armor to a vehicle and make themselves harder to destroy.
@r.awilliams9815
@r.awilliams9815 6 жыл бұрын
Micheal Moody-The smoke is from the rails vaporizing to some degree. The rails will have a limited round life before needing replacement, and no one official seems to want to talk about rail life and round count on these rail guns.
