Protestors took action at the Onkaparinga council meeting on Tuesday 17th January
Concerns were raised by the protestors against the Climate Change Response Plan 2022
A key part of the plan is ‘Toward Zero Corporate Emissions Roadmap’, which commits council to an 80% reduction in its corporate carbon emissions by 2030.
The council says there is ‘An opportunity to expedite action on climate impacts, over and above the commitments already made in the Climate Change Response Plan, is to declare a climate emergency.
Council says that ‘Declaring a climate emergency requires commitment to “mobilise society-wide resources at sufficient scale and speed to protect civilisation, the economy, people, species, and ecosystems”.
Protestors are against the plan claiming it is part of the so called 15-Minute Smart City
The core Smart City premise is it should take no longer than 15 minutes of walking or cycling from your home to meet your daily needs such as school, work, food, health, education sports and leisure
The concerns are that the implementation of Smart Cities may lead to residents travel and freedoms being restricted by limits on distance and time allowed to travel from your home amongst other things.g
