@@bwheels02 the power supplies have been redesigned and the heat sinks are far more prevalent. My personal advice - upgrading to the RZ-70 from the RZ-50 is not advisable UNLESS you find the RZ-70 on sale like it is at Crutchfield for $1999.00.

The systemic HDMI failures haven't been an issue for nearly a decade now. It was definitely a weakness of the late -00s/early-10s Onkyo/Integra design.

You have been VERY lucky not to have had an HDMI board issues with that one

The Denon X3800h is a better buy. While I want to love the RZ50, it is a 11.1 output and no DLBC. The X3800h measures slightly better and has 11.4 output, and is DL and DLBC upgradable. You can get it for $1000-1300, same price as the RZ50. IMO the X3800h killed the RZ50.

@@andrewskaterrr So you have owned the RZ-50 or you're just doing a side-by-side comparison on paper? I've owned three ONKYO receivers and there is a clear distinction in the house sound of both brands. Denon leans warm while I've found Onkyo to be neutral. I agree about the subwoofer output.

Yeah, that's the main reason I got a Denon X3800h instead. Also people were having major Dirac issues on Onkyo at the time.

@@momsbasement656 Dirac is very easy to set up on these units. I have often thought that this units is the best thing out there under $3500. It best the Denon X6800 in bench testing

You should set it to high impedance then break the switch off so that you or anyone else never puts it in 4ohm mode again. 😊

@saplinbisjac No I didn't but it's pretty easy to calculate. You'd be surprised how little average power you use during normal listening, especially if your speakers are all bass managed.

I owned and loved the SR8015 but it's no longer in current production and not a fair comparison. The Onkyo has newer HDMI boards, slightly more powerful amp section and Dirac support.

unfortunately rz3100 has nothing in common with rz70 only with rz3400. I have rz1100, these are class D amplifiers and rz70 is class AB. These are completely different amplifiers with the same power.

No. 4 height channels is the max for this unit.

@NMP660 impractical to test more than 7ch, especially since you already reach near the limit of the power supply and standard 15A outlet. Also there are no audio analyzers that go beyond 8CH.

@@wells2671 AFAIK Pioneer and Onkyo will continue using g their current Class AB design topology since it's very solid and cost effective. I don't see them going back to Class D ICE in the foreseeable future.

To get class D right in an AV receiver it's going to be expensive. The RZ50 struggle.

The new models from JBL are class D.

I haven't directly compared them. I love the MRX1140 as I own one for my bedroom system. ARC Phase Alignment and the whole calibration process is the easiest of all the room correction systems and does the least harm. The other room corrections like Audyssey and Dirac are more powerful and configurable tools but it requires more effort to get great sound. The amp section in the Onkyo is superior to the Anthem. It's not even close. If you're planning on only using the internal amps and you have low impedance speakers or like to play at high SPL, than the Onkyo is your choice. If you plan on preouting the AVR, then get an AVM70 instead with a few multi-ch amps.

@@Audioholics be curious if you consider one better sound quality then another. And you are upgrading or it’s not an upgrade to MRX1140. I’m a tweaker and probably a half a dozen measurements due to changes and dozen profile tuning options. I do use virtual inputs for Nite mode but that’s something I assume I can toggle in the Onkyo app

@Nikita-P my bedroom system doesn't require more power and I prefer to keep the Anthem in there for simplicity since ARC is so easy to calibrate and it works for that system.

Anyone have any general thoughts/preference for leaving extra headroom or bi-amping?

@@demonreturns4336 since it's launch. It has 9 channels of amplification, but you can do 11 channels in total (e.g. 7.2.4) if you add two channels of external amplification. I.e. it has 11 channels of precessing, and the two subwoofer outputs are independent.

@@Audioholics You are the man your Knowledge and Testing is King, I call Crutchfield and Onkyo and told them about the not changing the default Impedance switch and that I have Polk L600 and L800 towers and they said I could damage my speakers and I then told them this so they can better help inform the consumer I had my Impedance switch set to 4 Ohms how sad to do that to the consumer then walked Onkyo out the the review site and showed them Editorial Note: Impedance Selector Switch - No matter how tempted you may be to do so, we DO NOT recommend changing the default "6 ohm min" impedance setting of ANY AV receiver, especially this unit. All this does is starve your speakers of power, simply so the manufacturer can get 4-ohm certification (at a reduced power level) without making the receiver get too hot during their power tests. We have tested this 'feature' on virtually every receiver that has offered it in the past, and the results were always the same: the low impedance setting significantly robs your speakers of power..

@@ITWINGMAN Sadly, your dealing with unknowledgeable people from both companies. You will definitely cause more damage to your speakers by constantly clipping your amp in the low impedance mode.

It's nice what the unit already does for under $2800. Nothing else comes close. 1600 watts output power is very close to 15A outlet capability.

Gene it's a great product for the money but l'd like it if you could push manufacturer to gone down the path of full rated power rms 20hz 20kHw at least 7 channels 150W minimum & for the effect 130W that would be the BEST BENCHING RECIEVER EVER period something we haven't yet seen from any manufacturer yet .

@@arthurtaso8055 Onkyo is losing money with this AVR to gain marketshare. You're never going to get an AVR at this price that is more powerful. If you want something more powerful, you're going to have to step up to a Denon A1H which is significantly more money. I am very pleased with what Onkyo offers in this AVR and I would never ask them to make it more powerful without increasing the price.

Gene even the A1h doesn't do full rated power rms 20hz 20kHw with more than 2 channels just saying it would be AWESOME to see a reciever do that who will be the first manufacturer not like the the past greats .

I was tempted to jump on the 8015 price cut as well, but saw a review on a different, a thorough test bench analytical channel, and they put the quality of the 8015 in the thin sounding category, and the Onkyo in the Rz50 in a higher sound quality category. It gave me enough doubt that I decided to wait despite the excellent deal offered on the 8015.

@@stevet7487 The SR8015 is a great AVR and definitely not "thin sounding" unless the user did a bad calibration.

These are completely redesigned platforms. Look at the heatsinks on the HDMI boards. Much different.

@Audioholics still don't trust them as the third time is a charm. Gave more chances than I normally would because of their past Amplifiers that I currently own. We will see how long these last as only time will tell...

​@@rogerdjsI had the same problem with my flagship 5009. The soder heated up and the chip became unseated. No sound. I had less than a 1000 hours on my unit and Onkyo had already gone bankrupt. I was very disappointed because I loved the sound of that unit and I've owned many Onkyo products, and still do, from 1990 on. But this is a different company that owns it now and they have addressed those issues with larger heat syncs, and heat syncs with fans for the chips. There are reviewers online still touting their 3 yr. old RZ 50's. I understand your concern, but this is tempting. Plus, it seems like every new AVR or processor that comes out seems to have some issues that have cropped up. It really makes purchasing an expensive unit difficult to be sure of.

@@vivid_sk my arcam processor has Dirac and was £1000 with a THX Rotel 5 channel amp it came to £1500 half the price of the Onkyo and sounds miles better

@dastiffmeisterman my problem with buying a new car is you can buy a second-hand one for less money...... dumb argument. Just wait a year and buy the Onkyo 2nd hand if that's the type of buyer you are.

@@Audioholics I'm just saying AV receivers these days are way over priced. The Denon 4000 range for example used to be around £800 now they charge double. £3000 IMO is too much for this should be around £2000 mark. I'm surprised anyone would pay that considering what you can get on the 2nd hand market.

Still putting my A4L refurbed Onkyo txnr737 to the test after many years and continues to make a grin with its wonderful sound. Aside from running warmer than most, I feel I picked a winner at the time. Thanks for your quality reviews.
