Temasek and GIC portfolio is valued in SGD, so when MAS allows SGD value to rise against major trade currencies, the value of the portfolio is expected to decline due to FOREX adjustment. Temasek and GIC are now ranked among the best in the world or gold standard. Not bad for a country without natural resources.

@@prime8krish Stating the Fact is not wrong lest to say its discrediting. Your thinking logic error is quite pervasive among many singaporeans. Eg. If an activity is not illegal in sg, do you think it must be legal? No. Even leaders have admitted the advantage of our strategic geographical location. The other places do not offer a more efficient route than sg Strait. Also , much more piracy. Also, other countries their leaders are not given world highest salaries. Do not be confused to compare a sg with other countries. Compare sg now with past.

@@LonganLee Justly like Singapore having world class education system we cannot expect everyone to be brilliant and smart. With Singapore world-class standard of living, we cannot expect everyone to be happy. Just because a child is born rich, does it mean they will be smart? When British left us and Singapore seperated from Malaysia, we pretty much have nothing other than being a free port. on the same note. Malaysia and Indonesia have been trying very hard to duplicate Singaproe model and where are they now? Perhaps they should pay their minister well like Singapore so they can attract more talents and eliminate corruption?

Just a note that Temasek invests in private equities, including VC backed startups. Whose valuation is a little subjective. So perhaps Temasek should have a mandate around how much early stage, tech startups etc. Because paper gain in private markets is not quite "real" until realized and may have a discount if traded back too soon or runway not long enough.
@eatdriveplay

I'm sure they already have mandates, its part of their overall strategy and risk management. The venture caps probably take up 1-2% of their portfolio and is negligible in the bigger scheme of things. And out of that 1-2%, they will have tighter risk management policies to limit exposure of each investment to x% within this 1-2% again....

You're dishonestly putting this comment in various videos. That's blatant lie. The MAS OFR is published on a monthly basis, Temasek's portfolio value is also published annually. NIRC is public on the national budget. It is the GIC's portion that is secret so that others won't know what we have to defend our assets under attack... There's no loss hiding anywhere. 0:18: The NIRC in 2022 was S$22.38 billion, higher than income tax and rivaling corporate tax revenue. 0:32: Without the NIRC, personal income tax in Singapore could be twice the current rate. 0:46: Goods and services tax could more than double without the NIRC. 0:57: The NIRC is half of the returns derived from investing Singapore's reserves, with GIC and Temasek Holdings being the main contributors. 9:20: Temasek's investment strategy has shifted from local companies to international investments. 11:02: Temasek invests mainly in equities and startups, aiming for higher returns. 11:50: Temasek has started investing in startups and building its own companies. 13:04: Temasek's performance is often debated due to its riskier investments. "The historical average yearly return of the S&P 500 is 9.752% over the last 20 years, as of the end of June 2023." Benchmarked against S&P, returns from GIC and Temasek both fall short. Anyone care to explain?

@@danielkhoo2093 which is why I cited the 20-year returns. But even with this occasional drops of S&P, it still beats returns from GIC and Temasek long term. Why can't GIC and Temasek beat S&P benchmark?
@mistaroundus
@mistaroundus Жыл бұрын
@@lee1039 That is because this is not an apple-to-apple comparison. S&P500 measures the performance of the top 500 US-listed companies and is meant to help you know which companies to invest in the US. GIC governs Singapore's sovereign wealth which is meant to minimise risks primarily, before taking on additional risks to grow the funds over time. Do you think Singapore's investments for long term growth should just be in US companies? This is exactly what the series is talking about from Dr Goh's lesson on diversifying. You don't want to have Singaporean's generational savings to just dip overnight if the S&P suddenly does not do well. Hindsight is 20/20, and yes there are all the statistics which says that S&P is doing well over 20 years, but it does not tell you how much risks people at the time were taking when they decided to invest in it. In the same way, investing now into S&P does not guarantee that it will continue to grow as it did the past 20 years. If you really want to compare portfolio returns, it makes more sense to compare with other Sovereign Wealth Funds which has a similar purpose to GIC, such as ADIA, KIA, CIC
