Thank you for giving me motivation to get back to the bench, John! I have a collection of cabochons just waiting for me to get going. I will check out your other videos to find out how you get the solder to 1mm size and whether you use hard solder for the bezel and medium for the backing plate. I am really happy to see you use a hand-held torch for soldering. That’s all I have and sometimes when the hard solder won’t flow i think it’s because the torch is not hot enough. BTW, the links for your classes on udemy did not show up. May be a iPad problem. But i will look for them on that site. Thanks again

Hi my professor of jewelry, I love all the videos, I have learned so much over the last few years, and am a fan and subscriber. I would like to make a request to you, that you possibly upgrade your camera, so that the close ups are in clearer definition. These days with HD means pictures can be so clear. I find that the camera could be in sharper focus, as it would not only improve the close ups but also the overall feel of the video, with your face in clear focus too. I hope you can take this on board, and I look forward to watching videos you have made, and the future ones to come. Many thanks for all your time and effort providing these free videos. Thank you!!!!

If you are watching the videos on your smart phone, the quality of the recordings might not look that good. They are a lot clearer when you watch from your computer. That's just the way it is with KZfaq. Many of the older OJA videos were actually recorded using a cell phone. Over time we were able to upgrade our recording equipment with the financial support of our viewers and through earned income. If you watch the most current videos, I think you'll notice that they are a lot clearer. : )

Hi john.... I need your help !! I use sealing wax to block and work stones. But how can I eliminate and clean the pieces of wax that remain attached to the stones when I detach them? ..... thank you very much .....
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
You need to dissolve the wax with a solvent. I'm not sure what the composition is of the wax that you used. But, denatured alcohol or nail polish remover (acetone) might work. Be sure to take precautions to protect your health. If these solvents don't work, you might want to contact the manufacturer for help. : )

Hi there, love your videos! Thank you! Which cut file are you using on the bezel to remove that 1mm around the bezel? And would you use a different number cut if it were copper/brass?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
First, use your jewelers saw to trim most of the excess metal away from the basil. Then use the zero cut file to get fairly close to the edge of the bezel. Then, you can use a finer cut file to smooth the edge of the bezel. If you are making a bezel out of brass or copper you might need to use a course or cut file to refine them. But the process is essentially the same. 😀

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy Thanks! The right files are quite pricey so I was using a cheap #2 cut from the hardware store on a copper bezel and it was just horrendous!!

@@1827handmade It depends on how much metal you want to remove. This link might help: contenti.com/media/catalog/pdf/library/file_cuts_styles_shapes.pdf. The OJA also has videos on file posted to its website at: www.onlinejewelryacademy .com. There you’ll find our videos organized by topic.

@@OnlineJewelryAcademy About the amount of metal you file off the bezel in the video is about how much, which # cut file are you using in the video? Thanks for the link!!

John, how is this bezel setting video different than the others you've done? Aren't ALL of your made bezel settings custom? Also, why so much flux? It seems like about 4 times as much as usually needed. I'm sure you have some amazing wisdom to fill my brain with on these two subjects! Can't wait to be enlightened - as usual! :))) Ps. LOVE the "nest".
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
This is video is an edited version of the longer one. Flux absorbs oxides on silver. So, if you don't want to have to frost the interior of your setting to hide fire scale, you cover it in flux. Glad you found the nest tip helpful. : )
@flyingcheff
@flyingcheff 4 жыл бұрын
@@OnlineJewelryAcademy YES!! I totally do that fluxing to protect from Firescale (and I use FireScoff - which is amazing), but was wondering why the big globs - more than most instructors, videos, classes, etc., are you just being super cautious to help beginner soldering students? I'm not challenging you, just wondering, oh beloved master!
@OnlineJewelryAcademy

Flying Chef it was probably because we had to do many retakes and different angles while we were shooting that video. Things don’t always go as planned when you’re making a video tutorial. : )

Can you use a gold filled wire and sheet?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I never work with “filled” metal materials. But, you can work with them to make soldered jewelry. Remember to match your solder color. And, you might need to get a low karate gold bezel wire. 😀

What is the gauge of the metal sheet?
@OnlineJewelryAcademy
@OnlineJewelryAcademy 4 жыл бұрын
Bezel wire is always 28 gauge fine silver. The base of your bezel setting can be made from sheet metal between 22 to 18 gauge. For large setting, I generally use a thicker gauge for the base to avoid warping. : )

Hi John! Love your videos! I’ve always wondered something... considering the fact that some people who watch your videos don’t know how things are done, and will copy your “demonstrations”. Why your not actually demonstrating your jewelry making the way you make jewelry. You know, with you sitting by your bench pin and actually using your bench pin to utilize tools better? Why are you standing? Maybe you stand in your class room setting. But for demonstrating... Like for things such as filing your bezel in the miter jig as you show?? You can see it’s not easy to do while just indicating the filing like you’re doing in this video, rather than using your bench pin like you do when making jewelry, so you can press harder agains the pin and metal, so it doesn’t wobble and not get the correct pressure you’ll get on the pin? People who don’t know better will do as you do... because they think you’re “demonstrating”. They will file on the side of their hand on the table top just as you’re doing here. Or why don’t you say your just indicating here, and insert the way it’s supposed to be done properly. I mean you’re videoing from over head, using different angles, and doing all the editing anyway, so why not demonstrate the way it’s done, rather than indicate? We’d love to see you actually at your pin, sitting. You don’t need to stand. We see you. We love you.

My standing at the bench is just a style choice that we made when we started filming the tutorials. It is easier to sit and work for sure. And, good posture at the bench is very important so that you don't damage your body: your most important tool. We won't be going back and to reshoot all of the videos with me sitting. But, I appreciate your feedback.😀
