The description literally told that you need to get enough points to claim the win. The opponent wasn't into saving pieces, he was into capturing points

It says absolutely nothing about actually claiming it though. Do you need a certain point advantage? Be at a certain turn? Have certain point total? None of these seem accurate, his point advantage was less than a single green piece, turn was a 24 (not a nice number), his point total was 271 (even less nice of a number) You can't know without going out of your way to look it up

A green piece is 12 points. The opponent was up 40 points, even if Simp takes all their remaining pieces they can't catch up, so there is no reason to play on. It's like trying to play out a king vs. king and knight situation. It has to be a draw, no point in playing.

Because it depends. The opponent get's 20 points for your claim plus all the value of the green pieces on the board. You need to be up a variable amount of points, depending on how your opponent is doing

@@San-lh8uswhen you claim the win, you give the opponent all the points on the board. Simp was 40 points behind and a total of 32 points were available on the board. He got those 32 points after the claimed win and was 8 points behind. That's why he lost. It's a points game If you claim win after the first turn, your opponent gets all the forest pieces and all your pieces. Which is over 500 points compared to your 12

It says on the right that you can just claim the win if you have enough points for that, and the green units are worth more points. In conclusion your opponent let you take his units since they are worth less than the green units, and you fell for his trap.

@@mattlm64 You need so many points that your opponent cannot catch up even if they capture all your pieces. What that means in terms of points depends on how the game went, but it's a guaranteed win situation - no point in playing on.

When the opponent can't capture enough points to beat your score even if they capture everything left. The problem is Simp doesn't read closely enough, because he's not a coward, even if it bites him back sometimes.

"Claim Win" is a point thing. You can "Claim Win" if you have at least 33 Points advantage and it's your turn. So the Points really do matter. EDIT: This is only partially correct, see answers (from others) for details

12 Points per Green Piece and 20 for the claim advantage as it turns out. There was only a single green piece, so with the 20 for the claim, that's 32. But if there would be more green pieces then you'd need a bigger advantage and vice versa.

They won by points I think, green pieces worth more than opposing ones fsr. See the numbers on the left of the profile pic? I think that might have been the points and game ends after 3:45 Looking closer, opponent leads by 40 points at the end while yellow (Simp) is at +32 (as in 32 more points on the board than the opponent). So... yeah...

Why would they not go in some more details in the short description? Even a single extra sentence like "You can claim the win if you are enough points ahead that you opponent capturing everything isn't enough." would have made it much clearer that you can just end the game suddenly. Though best to also mention that the unaligned pieces are worth a lot

The green pieces in the middle of the board are worth 12 points, like a queen-knight (which they actually are, called "amazon"). It's better to take them than the opponent pieces. The enemy won on points.

Therefore, the optimal way to play this game is to simply capture the green pieces using your different pieces so that after all the green pieces are dead, you can start the battle from prepared position. in fact, this blocks early aggressive play and artificially delays the game. very stuffy variant.

So… this Amazon variant is basically about who can take the most timber out of the rainforest the fastest, and bounce? Seems a pretty accurate points scenario to me. Edit: lol that kind of makes it even more hilarious that Simp’s American opponent is better at it than at regular chess!

Yeah apparently the idea of the variant is that taking neutral pieces is worth more points, so you have to decide between weakening your opponent + cutting his capture options by capturing his stuff, or getting the most points by capturing neutral stuff. You didn't know any of this so you blundered an easy win by allowing a big enough point difference. Claiming the win gives your opponent all the remaining available points and ends the game, which means you win if your current point advantage is greater. You should play this variant again but knowing how to play it 😂

After seeing the claim I went back and read the rules again. If you have enough points you can claim the win, but it didn't say how many. Apparently the requirement was somewhere from 260 to 271 given the difference in points before and after the last capture, but for not specifying, I'm seconding the WTF. Is it me or were the trees worth too many points?

While it is listed in the description, it would be nice if they gave the actual point number. Basically, you misunderstood the game. It's not about checkmating, just who has more points. Yes, you can checkmate, but it seems this game follows quidditch rules. Meaning that you just get a certain number of points for checkmating (32). So if you "checkmate" the opponent while having less than 32, the opponent still wins. Now, the issue is that the opponent just "resigned" which gave you 32 points for checkmating. But since the opponent captured more green pieces, they had enough of a point lead. Personally, I am not a fan of this, since it means, you HAVE to focus on the green pieces first which makes the game just a longer game of chess with new pieces, because you include the "setting up" phase as part of the game.

You don't get 32 points when the opponent resigns. You get all the available points on the board. Which in this case are 32. Which was not enough to get over the 40 point advantage.

@@TheThursty100 That is not possible. There is one green piece still on the board (+12) and even if we only count the red pieces we get more than 32 points. There are 10 pawns (+10), one rook-knight (+7), a camel and a knight (both worth 3, so +6) and a buffalo (which I don't know the value of, so let's keep it low at +3). The Buffalo is probably worth more (since it's a knight+camel), but let's keep it like that to show the point. This means, the piece values of red+green (so everything that yellow could capture) is at least 38. And that's not even considering the fact that checkmating your opponent probably gives you points as well for "capturing the king".

@Modie How do you know that capturing pawns is worth any points? Also, checkmate looks to be an alternative win condition, so I don't think it's worth any points, it's just a win. But you have to achieve it before either player can claim a win by points.

@@Modie Yeah you're right the math isn't mathing. That said, you still don't get 32 points when you win. I just tried it where one side captures nothing while the other side captures everything. I needed a 300 point advantage for the claim win button to even show up and then the opponent only got 140 points. When the green pieces alone had been worth 120 and I never captured any red pieces. Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. You get the points of the available green pieces plus 20 for the checkmate.

It is. If you pay attention, Simp got +32 points. Basically, the opponent "resigns", but that gives only 32 points to Simp, and then the opponent still has more points, so he wins.

It was entirely a points thing. When the other guy claimed win, Simp got 32 extra points -- literally the points of everything left on the board. And he was still 8 points behind. If the game had continued, it would remain impossible for Simp to win because there was no way left to gather enough points. Every turn that Simp took the opponent's pieces instead of a green piece was a turn he was shooting himself in the foot by taking lower point pieces.

I read the rules & even went back to reread them after the video to see if I was missing something. They just don't make sense. "If you have enough points, you can claim the win." Okay, well using ONLY knowledge from the description, what does that mean? What is "enough points"? I keep seeing that you can claim the win if you have such a lead on your opponent that they could never catch up, but the description never actually tells you that. I'm sure they're right, but the rules-as-written are very misleading.

Simp's opponent had 28 pts remaining in his pieces (not counting the grasshopper: 10 pawns + camel(3) + knight(3) + wildebeast(5) + chancellor(7)). The numbers don't add up if "claim the win" gave those points to the opponent - 32 were actually transferred. After digging into it and looking on the forums, it looks like this: what was transfered was the remaining amazon (12 pts), and a flat 20 pts. In other words, you need to get 21 points above the opponent to claim the win if there are no amazon pieces left. When Simp took a chancellor or an archbishop instead of an amazon, it was basically -5 for him. Like blundering a rook. When he took a knight or a camel instead of an amazon, it was -9. Like blundering a queen.
