I think Ares is Wonder Woman's true archenemy, even in the comics. For Cheetah, Diana was more heartbroken that she lost her friend and from time to time always managed to defeat with relative ease. Ares on the other hand is one villain she truly hated (which was mutual on Ares' part) and the one who had the most impact on her, so there was more personal animosity between them. Not to mention, Ares is a god and Diana even acknowledged that he was a tough foe to take down, so it was one of those times she wasn't willing to hold back.

when u read in between the lines ,Ares is basically saying, "when u were born, u were a girl, i didn't kill you bcoz, we could repopulate after i destroy my father's creations'

The reason why she has the Godkiller in other movies is because the real sword of Athena was replaced by a fake one when Diana left it unsupervised after she killed Ludendorff. Ares left her defenseless without the sword, leaving her with only using the Lasso of Hestia, but he did tell Diana the truth about killing another god with her own power.

This was an excellent plot twist. One, that WWI was not some god-manipulated event, and you couldn't stop it just by killing one bad person (though this is undone by how everything gets fixed once Ares is dead). Two, that the legendary weapon isn't the legendary weapon at all. It subverts expectations in a wonderful way. And Thewlis is the BOMB at playing an unassuming villain.

Ares wasn't wrong with his thoughts due to his beliefs in war and such, it's just how twisted his approach was due to being above mankind so much. And to think, even if he is gone, we see how humanity's atrocities would appear again for sure, and be even more devastating in World War II, compared to what Diana saw in World War I.

This is what the standard for villains is in good writing. The hero of his own story who believes the ends justify the means. A well-written villain isn't the kind of bad guy who wants bad things (unless you're going for a Chaotic Evil bad guy, but those are difficult to create), he's the kind of bad guy who wants good things but does bad things to achieve them.

Wonderwoman about Steppenwolf: "I've never seen a being so powerful". Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't Ares much stronger than Steppenwolf?

What's crazy, is that based on DC lore, Ares was pretty strong at this point. Obviously when darkseid invaded he was at his strongest... and the greek empire and roman empire and the 100 years war and so on.... but for almost 2000 years the only war that rivaled Ares strongest moments were the world wars.

Man, I liked both this scene and the final fight. It doesn’t contradict the rest of the movie as many tend to say. They just needed to change Ares’ face when he dons the armor and reverts to godly form.

Never noticed before, but when Diana falls back to the ground after he makes that explosion with her lasso, the lasso is already magically back to her hip, tied up and everything...

I swear the entire movie I thought she was just being a crazy out of touch Amazonian looking for Ares (I had no idea he was a DC comic book villain) in the midst of an immediate oncoming war. Turns out she was right the whole time about him existing in the first place. So this was such an unexpected boss fight for me lol.

This wouldn't have been a problem if he just transformed into a scarier looking person. Because he doesn't look very intimidating... he looks like the god of British cookies and tea, not the god of war

It makes sense that they have him play as the god of war, since everyone has a french accent he would be perfect for the scene. He fits this movie perfectly.

Ares should have won. He's the god of war. He's been around for millennia and has seen all combat. It should have been nothing to him to put Diana in her place.

For the original plan of the DCEU, it was to reveal that Reverse Flash was the biggest villain pulling the strings in the background and his actions led to certain impacts not just on the Flash, but the other members of the Justice League. They were to reveal what he did in the other DCEU films causing certain events to happen. So, while Ares gave ideas to people on what weapons to make, what if Reverse Flash told him about these weapons to lead to their creation? What if Reverse Flash was really responsible for World War 1? What if Reverse Flash did this to mess with Wonder Woman so she can slowly start to lose hope with humanity because in Snyder's plan, she and the rest of the Justice League would break up and go to war with each other. As what Reverse Flash said in the Flashpoint movie when the world was going to end, he'd say it was worth it.

The tragedy is that Ares is always poorly represented and here they made an attempt at showing his other side. Ares is both the god of mindless slaughter and chaos but also of order. He is two sides of the same coin the physical embodiment of Gemini. But most people only see him as a mindless brute, that’s the only tragedy here. One day someone will give him the love the character deserves.
