I love that when you watch ragnarok you get this little call back and it makes it clear that in this moment Odin fears Thor will become another Hela I feel that his moments hesitation isn’t because he is considering Hela and realising what he needs to do. I think he’d made up his mind the moment thor started mouthing off. No, I think that hesitation is him thinking and trying to figure out where he went wrong. I also think it’s why he wanted to kill Loki in Dark World and had to be talked down by frigga. He blames himself for his children’s failings and feels that he has to punish them as harshly as possible because to him, if he doesn’t, he’s failing them again. He clearly loves all of his children but he knows he can’t let them get away with this shit, so over does it on the punishment so it doesn’t look like he’s showing favouritism. By the time it got to Loki he’s just realised he doesn’t know what he’s doing wrong or how to change. The sad thing is, from everything we see he is as a decent parent. Not perfect, but there are worse parents out there. At the end of the day, he is not responsible for his children’s choices, they are. And at the end of the day, all three of his children were assholes at some point. And two of them got better.

There’s a reason Thanos didn’t do shit until after Odin kicked the bucket. Fun fact: Odin’s old for a reason.

Those of us who are older were spoiled years ago, there were so many great actors at once. Stage actors, guys who were a little mad in their roles. I think he's one of those actors who often comes across as the same character, but he really shines when he's allowed to go all-out and put some emotion into the performance. It may have been half by accident, but they really did a good job with his character development. He's so bitter and worn down in the second movie, but by the third he's found a better balance between responsibility and who he was in the beginning.

That dialogue was completely improvised...the last thing that is scripted is "while Asgard falls..." after that the director said to Hopkins that he must improvise, that's the reason the insult that Hemsworth gives looks so improvised. All the dialogue including Loki saying "Father" and Odin growiling is improvised until the "I now take from you..."

No, he wasn't, because she didn't exist as a character at this point. She was a random addition to the third one and had zero planning beforehand. That's why all of her backstory is contrived and dumped in exposition.

@@antonellaromero_upc1564 I know it because: A) It says on Wikipedia page for Thor Ragnarok that Hela was chosen at random for the third movie and the screenwriter wasn't even sure if it to make her Odin's daughter. B) One of the screenwriters on the first movie was J. Michael Straczynski, who was also a writer on Thor's comics. So he definitely wouldn't allude to Hela being Odin's daughter because he himself wrote stories with Thor where she's accurately depicted as Loki's daughter.

@@antonellaromero_upc1564 I like to think thats good writing takes existing content then enhances it upon repeated viewing. Like how in Star Wars you can tell they didn't intend Vader to be Luke's father. In fact last I recall it was intended to be a single film. However, the little flesing out with Vader in Ep 5 worked kinda nicely. Vader requests to turn Luke rather than execute him is played with subtlety. Since till that Point Vader was basically a thug who killed folks be it rebels or imperial if they failed enough, he flat out chokes an officer in a meeting until Tarkin stops him. So really Vader has no qualms taking lives. He has no reason to spare Luke unless he knew Luke is his son and that part of Anakin still wants the chance to be with his family. That sort of stuff is always fun with writing where you can expand upon something. So the idea here is Odin was worried Thor would be like him, a warmonger, but then Ragnarok comes out and it adds that Odin is worried Thor would be like him, a warmonger, or worse like Hela and be this chaotic force of death. It enhances Odin's character beyond the plot setter for Thor to prove his worthiness to now be a concerned father who already failed his daughter and is frightened he is repeating that failure with his son. Just a nice piece of writing. :)

I have a doubt.. every one is saying this is the moment when Odin casts a spell of worthiness on mjolnir.. but i believe that before this scene also one who is worthy can only lift the hammer. And Odin gives the spell as one who is worthy shall posses the power of Thor, that only gives the power of Thor to someone who is worthy not someone who is worthy can only lift mjolnir.

Everything that happens on the surface happens between a king and his subject/heir, everything else between a father and his son. He sent Mjolnir down with every hope that his son would learn, despite his anger and disappointment.

If not, then Asgard would gain a new hero...

My folk always ask me so damn many things about the whole marvel universe especially this one. In the endgame when Iron Man, Captain America & Thor kicking thanos ass when the scene Cap lift the mjolnir, they ask me how did cap wield it? My answer is remember the first thor movie? then they replied "Yes we do" okay go to the scene when odin kick thor in earth and you will know the answer of that

and here comes the question, is miss jane foster worthy of holding mjolnir or the fact that she had an infinity stone inside her helped her in some way?

In human years he is 1500. In Asgardian terms he is just 20. And Loki is 16. Seventeen in the first Avengers. Thor is a god, who made the human mistake of taking the wrong step when he was this close to victory, but not there yet. Loki spend all of his life hearing about monsters called frost giants, trying to prove himself over his brother whose shadow he had been living under and his father always favoured, but couldn't understand why. Then he found out that he is one of those monsters, and in his father's eyes he was a tool for peace, that he could never accomplish the one simple thing he had always and with any right wanted: to be Thor's equal. Odin though, did something only for one of these problems.
