Before hitting the dislike button because you think he didn't give you a step by step guide, take the time out to look at other people's path and even his own shirt series to understand that this is the most true and sincere advice you can get. Merry Christmas🌲🌲

Well said. Back in the mid 1990s during my teens, me and my mates were entrenched in the scene, I specialised in PBX hacking, but we had fingers in many pies, credit card fraud, calling cards, BBS/PHP exploits etc. My mate was picked up by BT (British Telecom at the time) investigations, working with Northumbria CID. Arrested in a public phone box with reprogrammed magnetic strip card as a 'credit card' all so easy back then) I got rid of everything, but two weeks after his arrest my house was raided (parents house, I was watching the cars pull up outside in my school uniform). I'd just turned 18, but my mate was 17 and technically a child, so hiis hyper strict Indian parents had to sit in the interview room with him, not cool 🤪 The original charge was conspiracy to defraud, but ultimately they couldn't pin me down, and used "illegal extraction of electricity" for using a company phone exchange without permission, as they didn't have a specific charge for it in 1996. Met some first year students on a night out a few years ago in Liverpool who were studying Cyber Security as a course, and they didn't know the basics. Zero fundamental IT knowledge. If you want to get into security, study a generic Computer Science course like I subsequently did (Northumbria CID agreed to give me a conditional caution, despite the fact we all knew I was guilty as sin, so my University application wasn't effected) and not a specialised "cyber sleuth" degree because it sounds cool. It's like kids paying to do worthless Forensic Criminology degrees because they watched a TV series, give me a Chemistry student every time.

What is also important to mention: IT Security is not just pen testing. Whenever I hear something about IT security on KZfaq, it's always about pen testing. In reality, very few IT security jobs have to do with pen testing. In my experience, most jobs are in the area of analysis, engineering and management.

Sure! But those jobs I’m also not super interested in. So I typically view a small subset as the jobs I’m considering. I figured that the content of this channel also only relates to this small subset. But it would be annoying to specify all the time the few areas it is applicable

Thanks for this and all the videos you made! I ended up in IT Security randomly 5 years ago. When I had a chance to decide what to do, a couple of years ago, since I was interested in different paths, I ended up being an engineer/advocate for DevSecOps, which is only partially relevant with pentests. Personally I wouldn't want to work in a Red Team, although I have to collaborate every once in a while. Listening to you makes perfect sense and it's a brilliant and honest advice that I share. Also, I personally love being at home and isolate whenever I can, so I fully understand the feeling :) Thank you so much again, I've binged in two days probably one tenth of your videos and I plan to do more! I've also recommended you to some of my colleagues who aren't really sure about what they want to do and some that are boosting they want to be in pentesting but I personally don't believe they have the skills, let's see if by looking at the direct experience of what you do, something will change :)

I've been following your channel since you made the Pwn3 CTF series, and watching your videos is really inspiring for new comers to the cybersecurity industry. What you mentioned in particular in this video holds really true in the country where I live where most of job advice mentioned doesn't apply so well here. It's re-assuring hearing what you mentioned, and that its not me going crazy about the cybersecurity industry locally in my region.

Omg, I've been watching your cyber security videos for a few months and that's where I recognize you, pen spinning. I'm from the US and I was never good enough for the world tournament, like you were, but I remember you made a website with someone and I placed at my school talent show because of the tutorials from it and elsewhere. That skill gave you the competitive spirit that you still use today with pen testing and ctf! What a small world!

I agree with you on this topic. I know that there are a lot of people seeking guidence, like a step-by-step guide and like you said. The requirements changes from city to city and country to country. And the amount of roles in IT-Security makes it even harder to tell someone "this is what you have to do". I got lucky to go to a school where the management of the school is also the management of the biggest IT-security Companies in the area and they have a direct influence over which courses we should take. Also they update it for every class.

Lots of pentesting companies today have internship and graduate schemes. These are open to anyone who is passionate about learning to become a hacker. As others have mentioned, there is also more to IT security than just penteting. Interestingly, LiveOverflow's channel has almost nothing to do with pentesting (for example, I've never once seen a video about waiting for creds and firewall changes XD). This channel is a lot closer to bug bounty research. Don't get me wrong I love this channel so much and have learned so much from the videos here and watching these videos will definitely make you better at IT security regardless of part of the field you are in. The point I'm trying to make is that IT security is very broad and there are lots of career paths. The most important thing is that you are passionate and that you choose a path that you love doing.

Good video. And the statement that everybody is different and has a different path in front of them is 100% correct. There are people who will thrive in binary, some in web, others in network, etc... Most of other youtubers have very simple formula: "LEARN THIS NOW", "GET THIS CERT NOW" and similar... People eat it up of course and probably lot of them regret enrolling when they realize this isn't for them. There is also a very harsh truth that not ANYBODY can become a cyber security guy and get a job. It looks very appealing but if you don't have a certain wiring in the brain, you just won't succeed. It is same as being a doctor, lawyer or whatever else. Not everybody can do it. But if you can do it, it will come to you naturally and not being "forced" to do it.

There are two major types of IT security, defensive security and offensive. One is more theoretical about best practices of protection and just being up to date with past and most recent vulnerabilities, while offensive security requires practical knowledge of those attacks and requires more practical experience (like CTFs).

Your GoogleCTF videos were recommended to me the other day and I was really intrigued that there IS actually such area which was almost never mentioned in the university I was in. I was taking degree which, by default, leaning more towards Software Engineering. I feel like I'm pretty late on learning IT security, even though I know it's a quite young area. I'm not the smartest person, I know some freshmen do a better job in IT sec than I do, and it kinda made me feel rough to know that I will compete for a career against him and almost certainly going to give him the place. What do you think about a wider career options, some of which are hardly related to ITsec?

I recently got a job as an IT security consultant, and I never really prepared for that position. I even got a PhD in a very different field (particle physics), and yet I am now a pentester. This is what helped me to get this job.

@mkesenheimer

@@KakashiHatake-jz4bu Don't get me wrong, physics is an insanely interesting field and I liked my work. At the time I finished my PhD I saw no opportunity to get a job in a science related area. Usually, jobs at universities are very rare and you have to be very lucky to get a foothold there. In addition, jobs at universities are not exactly family-friendly. So I looked around for other options. A job offer in infosec came at just the right time, as I was already interested in the topic beforehand.
