Only Love Can Break Your Heart by Saint Etienne. This was the band's first single and is a cover of a Neil Young track.

Early 90's: post-doc'ing in Hamburg and feeling soooo lonely - a stellar Edinburgh friend sent me, a hugely appreciated, cheer-up slick mix-tape (cassette) by post. Two songs immediately & truly made ... my heart-miss-a-beat - Saint Etienne: "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" + "Nothing Can Stop Us Now". Holy moly - really, 30 years since it's release? "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" still sounds as "cool and deadly" as ever. Saint Etienne slick tunes have been constant in my tracklist (particularly "He's on the phone"). Guttingly, sweet Edinburgh gent, cinematographer Scott Ward (the slick mixtape DJ) is no longer here - I will never forget his lovely friendship, so this is also for him. Thank you St Etienne (and, the other stellar ... punk / indie / electro bands I grew up with at the time) for inspiring me. Slick Saint Etienne - you, so deserve more music industry recognition and accolades. In bocca al lupo.

North London locations you see in this video: Parliament Hill Lido (the swimming pool) on Hampstead Heath; either Highgate or Archway tube station interior, you see the exit to 'Archway Road' , it could be either station; the facade of the Tufnell Park Tavern pub on Tufnell Park Road; Georgiou's shop on the corner of Tufnell Park Road and Warrender Road; and a glimpse of the exterior of Charlton Court flats in Tufnell Park. I think Stanley and Wiggs lived in the area then so this is a kind of video diary.

I summarized some comments about the versions of this video: Moira Lambert didn't want to appear in the video; the girl who appear is Lucy Gillie from Golden Band. Moira Lambert had her own band at the time, called "Faith Over Reason". They put out two EPs in 1990, "Billy Blue" and "Faith Over Reason" (the latter only on vinyl), then a compilation in 1991, "Eyes Wide Shut". Then in 1994 they put out an EP "Blind" and an album "Easy". This is the video for the track "Blind", which shows "Faith Over Reason" as they were in 1994. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nduFZKRjsqjKdo0.html There’s another version of the video but with Sarah Cracknell as the vocalist: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNGkm6aH2OCdYKc.html

Great memories of the 60.s ,i had a Saturday job as a Milk delivery Mans assistant at the age of 12! The Express dairy logo triggered the memory. Also great to see the cars of the era Cortina,s Rover,s Consul,s e.t.c.

I first heard this song playing 3 to 4 times a day on the radio back in September 1991 when I was 15 years of age & doing 3 weeks work experience. It was in the charts with "i'm too sexy for my shirt", "Everybody's free", "Peace in the valley", "Creed", "Jacky", "Live your life be free" and "Something's got me started" This song was the only song that never got on my nerves

The 90s was our 60s..amazing time to be alive, so sad those days are well and truly gone and all we have left is bittersweet memories 😢

This song takes me back to the wild 90s, Clapham Common. Not a care in the world, no responsibilities always smiling and loving London life

Hace casi 10 años descubrí esta canción y no deja de gustarme, la disfruto mucho. La mezcla entre guitarra y sintetizadores es todo un placer para mis oídos.

This song still sounds so fresh today. Could be released today and nobody would notice it's actually from the 90s!

i love this song just as much as you but you’re fucking crazy if you think this could be released today and people wouldn’t notice. it’s dated as fuck, nobody is using drum samples like these anymore.

@@deveroth8871 It's not dated at all. Sounds very fresh and unique.

"Two videos were released for the single. The original version is mostly in black and white and depicts Lucy from early 90s pop trio Golden miming the vocals (Lambert refused to appear in the video). Check out the video below."

Now that’s what I call a gentle mellifluous sometimes hard nineties avant-garde banger with inky dinky keyboard meanderings and a catchy timeless melodies over a rack of barbecue beats that slaps! Volume 1 - St. Etienne: ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’. .x

I’m 18 years old rn and stumbled upon Saint Etienne recently, I wish I grew up in the 90s, you’re all lucky. Currently growing up in an antisocial, spiritless and dull world, everyone lacks creativity Edit: I’m 19 now, I don’t believe this world is spiritless, that its lacking in creativity, in some places/ areas yes, but I still wish I grew up when you guys did haha, having no phone would be so so nice, my life is so dependent on my phone and I wish I could get rid of it for a while but I actually need it day to day for business etc. :/
