When soundproofing for train noise or even sound proofing for truck noise, there is only one soundproofing technique that will work. Soundproofing a wall or soundproofing a window for train noise is different than the more common methods.
I will also explain in this video what type of noise frequency trains emit. Knowing if noisy trains are high-frequency sound or low-frequency sound will determine what type of soundproofing you will need to get this done by a soundproofing professional or the DIY way!

One thing to note here about window pane here if you're looking to block out truck noise is too aim for glass panes that are as thick as possible. Dosen't matter if you're running them in double glazed or single glazed configuration, you want one of your panes to be 10-12mm thick. If you have a huge budget 2 sets of laminated glass in double glazed configuration will do wonders or if you just looking at secondary glazing a thick pane of 10mm glass in addition to your existing window with at least a 100mm air gap would be good. Really though despite what most "soundproofing companies" try to tell you, the airgap (well for most windows with a small 12,20mm airgap anyway) and lamination is really only for purposes of removing the conincidence and sympathetic frequency and does not help much in soundproofing despite it costing exponentially more. For example a single 10mm pane of glass will always outperform double glazing in a 5-20-5 configuration or a double glazing in 8-32- 4 outperforming a tripple glazing in 4-16-4-16-4 configuration.

Can you do some sound blocking that doesn’t require rebuilding? If I rent a plane and there’s a factory noise nearby, how can I get rid of the bass type noise?

Hello! Above my apartment, on the terrace, there is a large air conditioner that makes noise 24 hours a day as it powers the telephone antennas. Below the terrace is my bedroom and I hear a lot of noise and vibrations at night. Please, how can I fix it, because I can't sleep peacefully at night? Should I insulate the terrace or the ceiling of my room? Thank you

My biggest question is how do you finish the inside corners, i understand caulking the gaps, but finishing the sheetrock due the edge being tapered and not wanting to see the taper after caulking.

You can finish it off with traditional drywall techniques or add trim. (Trim is how everything ugly is covered in home construction.)

If you are really close to a train track you will get a lot of vibration going though the ground into the structure of your house. You need to put a room into a room type of soundproofing to solve this. This could work for a bedroom but not for the whole house as it would be too complicated and costly. Talking about train noise, can't help but think our the Blues Brothers apartment LOL

in general it's hard, if you live in a house, the roof could leak sound, the exterior wall might have nail hole, you wall might have insulation not made for sound proof. The HVAC is nightmare and sound could travel from room to room. My best advice: 20k for a room or you should just consider moving.

Martin - I have a bedroom with four windows overlooking a busy road. I ordered laminated glass windows from WindowEstore, STC 37. I'm hoping these make a difference compared to the double hung, double pane, older stock windows currently installed. According to your video, if I don't feel vibrations, I should be okay not decoupling? In addition to the new windows, I bought a bunch of quietrock and plan to make another studded wall along the perimeter of the room. I'm concerned if the windows are still the weakest link, it won't matter how much I increase the STC of the walls. Don't really know what I want to ask here, but would be thrilled if you have any advice I could be missing from your videos. Also, the attic above this room is extremely loud - so I plan on adding insulation up there, and also adding a 5/8 layer of drywall to the ceiling. Good idea?

Hey Matt! Great question! What you suggest should work very well. There's not a lot you can do with a window other than changing it out but I will be doing a video soon on DIY Window plugs! That should help you a lot for blocking sound from coming in through the window.

@@soundproofguide Thanks, that gives me confidence. I'm looking forward to your video on window plugs for another room of the home. If the laminated glass STC 37 windows aren't enough, I was thinking to add "Indow Window" inserts to increase the STC further. They're expensive, which makes me wonder if there is a feasible DIY version. It seems like the hard part is finding the large sheets of Plexiglass needed for a reasonable price.

I installed a laminated window in one bedroom that faces a highway. I noticed that it reduced the noise by 50 percent. But, I just realized that the noise is also getting in the bedroom through the walls. I am planning to put quiet rock drywall.

I'd like to see a video on windows. I live 3/4 of a mile from a highway and can hear it. I already have rockwool insulation in the walls, my next upgrade is windows. Not sure if I should go double or triple pane. And I'm willing to bet the gasket material (from the sash to the frame) on the window makes a difference. Thanks!

What is most effective is laminated glass spaced with transparent natural rubber as an absorber and 2 different thickness of glass. What I bought is a laminate with 3mm and the other is 6mm so the total thickness is 10mm. There are thicker one but they are much more expensive and heavy. I soundproof both bedrooms in my apartment in Singapore by adding an inner window with laminated glass to the original outer window. This has the benefit to leave a bigger air gap than triple pan glass. My walls are made out of bricks and the structure and floor are concrete so there is not much going through that. With the original window I can hear the traffic in the street. When I close the inner window it become dead silent for most traffic. I can barely hear the idiots driving cars with open exhaust. The only thing that it does not stop is the slam of nearby lightning strikes and the hammer and drill from the neighbors' doing renovation work. The only issue is that it was a huge expense as we have wall to ceilling windows in the two bedroom. That costed us close to US$20,000. But no regret, a quiet place is worth a lot of money.

@@Alsinsin How close are these cars to your house? To mine is about 20 ft, and cars are traveling 45mph. Outside it can be 80+ dB when larger trucks drive by. There is constantly a hiss of tires on the road. I ordered new laminated glass, double pane windows. STC is supposed to be 37. So am hoping I have OK results.

@@mattgallagher7105 I live on the 13th floor of the building with the street right below. Cars/trucks/buses are traveling around 30 to 40mph. There is an almost constant rumble from the street. We are also close to an airport so we have sometime private jets flying nearby. I installed them initially because we knew that there would be a lot of construction work in the neighbourhood and it saved our lives. The glass is very effective in our case. I hope that it will solve your noise problem.

@@Alsinsin thats great to hear - even if it takes it down to a whisper, I’d be thrilled. I caulked up the current windows and it made somewhat of a difference. After that the high pitched hiss wasn’t as loud - but I can still hear the woosh of every car. The worst are people with loud exhausts and constant dump trucks thoughout the day. This doesn’t bother my wife nearly as much, so I think I have a sensory sensitivity thing.
@Alsinsin
@Alsinsin 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattgallagher7105 I can also hear loud exhausts but they are now more "distant". You are very close to the road so some of noise may travel through the road surface to the structure of your home. It is a bit like when the guy 8 floors below my apartment does renovation work. It feels like they are doing it right in mine. You get noise unless there is a complete decoupling between the space you are in and the noise source, like what they do in top of the line recording studio.
