I have a basic timer based cat door and it just uses a rigid plastic door and a latch at the bottom that can either lock the door or let it swing open. This looks like the same idea

Will this work if our cats don't have microchips? We don't have problems with other cats inviting themselves in but our cats bringing home playmates of significantly smaller size is not amusing.
