59-year-old widow Sylvia Stewart is struggling under the remnants of decades of out-of-control shopping. A self-confessed bargain hunter, Sylvia can easily spend up to £1000 per week, often buying multiples of the same items if it's at a good price. She estimates that she has spent around £100,000 on her hoard - amassing everything from furniture and ornaments, to dried flowers and empty milk bottles -but what used to give her pleasure has now turned into a living hell. Embarrassed by the state of her house, and with her son David desperate for his mother to change, Sylvia is determined to turn around her home and life.
Only Human celebrates and explores the unique and personal qualities we all have. Our channel offers a range of TV series and documentaries about human experiences and life journeys - while looking at the challenges life throws at us, turning ordinary people into everyday heroes.

This interior designer is the worst sort of designer - the moment she started pushing her own ideas without really listening to the client shows it. Her design in the other episode made a small space feel even more claustrophobic. And anyone who uses “squishy” as a descriptive in a professional setting is also a red flag.

Agree completely, as soon as she said her own preference was for colour jarring, the client became irrelevant. Especially considering if you’ve ever looked at her very popular website, no colour clashing in site. Surely you work with what the client likes but could never design themselves

Yes, that was entirely unnecessary. Yes, the house should be emptied and than the stuff should be selected what can be reused in the new setting. I THINK IT IS NICE TO HAVE A BIT OF A HISTORY in the house, things that have a negative vibe should go but other things that remind you of your long gone loved ones or happy events should stay. There are a number of things that are not mentioned in this episode, one of those is the constant bombardment to reuse, recycle, not to send rubbish to landfill. I also have a bit of a hoarding problem, not as near as what Sylvia has but a problem nevertheless. I am trying to reduce my junk mostly but every time I throw something in the bin I feel enormous amount of guilt and there is always this thought: I might need it again and than I will have to buy it and by the previous action I contribute to pollution, a bit of a catch 22 really.

She painted a piece of furniture, which was fine...I guess, but then I saw that all of the hardware was painted over too!!! So that's going to look really awful as soon as the piece is used a few times, and shows a lack of attention to detail. This owner has SUCH a beautiful house; I cannot believe that there was not more furniture in the hoard that did not need to be sold for funds and could have been repurposed in her home, especially since the hoard started after her things were taken/burned by previous partners!

They keep using this worthless decorator. She loves really dark colors and gray. I didn't see anything wrong with the light colored floor boards - it makes a room look bigger. You can also use oriental rugs. She didn't even talk to the people who HAVE TO LIVE THERE! I would hate having someone else decorate my house. She also picks really cheap looking furniture. This is not the right programme for this woman. A designer who has very set ideas about dark and wacky and does not want to listen to her customer, a woman who has developed a hoarding problem due to coercive past relationships and yet is being forced to sell her wedding and engagement rings from the man that did make her happy. And why was she being forced to sell all her nice furniture, and such a lovely big house should be light in colour scheme to make the most of the space. Surely the idea was to get rid of the hoard not deprive her of everything.

I get the fact that money had to be made to redesign the areas, but I would've thought that the designer would have taken some of the items that Sylvia had and liked and either built the design around them or incorporated them into the design (other than the chest/cabinet that we hadn't seen before). The rooms did turn out lovely and Sylvia was happy in the end, so I guess that's all that really matters.

To be very honest, it's quite appalling to see that the interior designer didn't really sit down with her clients to show colour palettes for them to choose & discuss options in order to reach a mutual agreement btwn them. Instead it was all "talk" mostly from the designer mostly with her own vision & style of "comfort living", whilst exploring from one room to the next. Besides, not only was Sylvia not given the opportunity to seek a counselor for help, she was also not given the chance to learn decluttering & organising her stuff on her own: What to not keep (recycling, selling, throwing) & what to keep. Have to consider that sometimes "not knowing what to do with stuff" may also contribute to hoarding habit. Since it is also a blessing to see how determined she was to gain confidence moving forward from her past like depression, I wish I knew how Sylvia is doing now but as a believer of Christ Jesus to understand that there is always a daily battle to keep getting up from falling, may God be with her in every situation.

This is not going to work. The hoarders are traumatized by loss. That's why they surround themselves with inanimate objects, to which they are emotionally attached. It's a kind of bulk which protects them from the brutal world. Contempt will make it all worse. Adding more feelings of loss is going to make it worse. Plus, the "interior designer" is outright rude: I choose my own colours in my own home and do not ask your opinion, thanks.✋ She hides beneath Barbie's hair, but in my humble opinion she is a clot and believes this house should be her's.

This seems like a very misguided attempt at “fixing” a problem that goes much deeper than the stuff. Having someone that finds treasures to sell their things and a posh designer who will come make over their space. Who will “ design rooms that a person will respect and not just fill up again” is basically putting a bandaid on a severed artery. This is kind of insulting. But maybe the folks across the pond aren’t as damaged as we are here in the US. Hoarders have an illness. Not just a clutter problem

This was an interesting one and she is such a nice lady with a lovely family. She is clever and understood the reasons - first a man who made her destroy things from the previous relationship etc. The biggest issue is 90% of hoarders/compulsive buyers backslide. Somehow she needs not to buy anything else. Also most of the things we buy have a very low resale value. I asked a luxury furniture shopw what they might buy back some of hte items I bought from then and it was peanuts compared with what I spent so I kept it (although I have large bare surfaces so no hoarding issue and every one of the makeovers has far too much stuff in it for my liking - I will not even tolerate a house plant never mind loads of them!

That designer could have kept that wonderful Mouse furniture, (it was so eclectic) and still redesigned it under budget. The poor home homeowner was taken advantage of. Totally awful replacements, with things that look cheap.

As someone who has severe depression. I can relate. I'm trying to break the cycle but its really difficult...And its almost like being a drug addict..you need that high to feel good and when you buy something, you get that high, then move on to the next thing you purchase.. Its such a nasty habit but i'm trying to break it.

Every new thing you bring into the house, remove 5 things permanently. Every morning pick out 5 things that can be donated, given to a friend or thrown away, the deliver it or toss it. 35 thing are gone at the end of the week, 1,825 in a year and without exhaustion. Doing 10 things a day is brilliant.

My focus on things started as Sylvia with others forcing me to "get rid of " in relationships. It has to be the person's choice to downsize, otherwise, it affects someone in very many ways. Sylvia got a very comfortable sanctuary and seems very happy now.

I knew how this was gonna go as soon as I saw that designer's overcoat, high contrast, oversized. I didn't mind the wallpaper because I love libraries and and books but it was so busy you couldn't even tell there was a buffet and breakfast setting in front of it. And who would want to sit and enjoy a cup of tea on those spindly chairs? All spit and polish. At least it was clear she had plenty of money if she wanted to replace it.

The American show is much better. There's always a psychiatrist working with the hoarder. After the show, hoarders are provided a therapy. And what's more, they don't throw away all good furniture.

I think that the idea of moving ALL of the hoard to a warehouse is a fantastic idea. It will clearly show the home owner their home empty, as opposed to dangerous clutter. And it displays just how MUCH stuff they actually have accumulated but never use. That is positive, as the home owner will see the potential in their de-cluttered home for once. As for this particular designer, I personally feel that she is not that great a designer; when the program was displaying some of the past things that she had done, I was cringing. So I did worry for this woman. But glad that she was happy in the end, and that is what counts.
