Successful radio DJ, Chris Hawkins appears to have it all. A glamorous career, a lovely house, and a beautiful weather girl wife. But, Chris hides a guilty secret, for the past 21 years he's been addicted to junk food. The reason Chris guzzles junk food is because he's petrified of fruit and vegetables. He can't look at or touch them or even say their names. The team try to help him overcome a problem that is affecting his work, his marriage and damaging his health.
Freaky Eaters is a series in which nutritionist Charlotte Watts and psychological coach Felix Economakis help people with strange eating habits and food phobias and addictions. While Charlotte encourages them to eat new foods, Felix attempts to get to the bottom of the psychological problems causing their food phobias, with the aim of getting them on the road to eating a healthy balanced diet in just four weeks.

When my son, aged 3, decided not to eat vegetables, we got him to grow his own. When they were cooked and served, he ate them, because he grew them. I very obviously froze his vegetables to make them last over the winter. He's eaten vegetables ever since.

He's got a very serious phobia, wow, that's kind of sad. I can understand how a phobia feels, so I can really emphazise with the frustration of feeling paralized, being aware of how absurd it is, and just how angry you can get with yourself for not being able to overcome it. Also how just the slight thought of it can make your stomach turn, or feeling how you're getting sick and anxious. just thinking about it. it's quite terrible.

@@gwenthompson8347, right. I had my first ever panic attack two years ago. I had no idea how that anxiety can take over your brain. I talked to an old friend who was a therapist and she helped so much. But I wouldn't willingly put myself in that place again, it's awful.

at first i thought this guy was ridiculous but i also have some phobias with eating and i can relate so much to him. i do love fruits and veggies but i have more of a sensory issues with preparing and smells of food once it’s cooked. i’m improving a lot on it and when his friend was feeding him the fruit salad ice cream it reminded me of when i have to force myself not to smell my food once it’s prepared. it’s very hard to confront these fears so i applaud anyone who has the courage to conquer it.

Funny how these "sensory problems" surrounding food don't happen in families with good parents or a distinct lack of food I have dyspraxia (a neuro-divergent disorder like autism so sensory differences are common) and I wasn't raised eating healthily but I grew up one day and decided to eat better, I didn't claim to be a victim and call my limited diet a "phobia"

@antonio No, there's no plural ending in S in italian, you can use espresso with no variation or espressi that is the grammatical correct plural of masculine words in Italian. The same for cappuccino, uno cappuccino or due cappuccini. But of course, if you are butchering someone else's language you can use espressos.

Lol he doesn't like that Natalie doesn't give him any breaks. No one likes the person pushing them towards their phobia, especially when they are highly embarrassed by it. Not only is he embarrassed by his eating, but he's ritualized and accepted his own behavior as his own special thing. I think he needs consistency and a schedule plus therapy.

I know this will sound crazy to a lot of you and I would never believe this, if it didn't live it. I grew up loving all sorts of veggies and fruit. When I grew up and decided to eat whatever I wanted for years... I have difficulty eating the right food on my own. Part of it is me, but junk and fast food have chemicals that wire your brain to only want the junk. It also wired me to stop me wanting healthier choices. I am changing that and lost 50 pounds now, but the years of addiction had me afraid of what I know is good for me. Junk wires cravings and your mind.

I think the lack of food or overeating is all about control. When kids don’t have any, they look for **something** that is theirs to manage. As I’m watching this, he just talked about needing control! My mother is German and was *obsessed* with food and control in every bit of our lives. She gave me a sandwich every day that was her favorite: Mayo, lettuce, peanut butter, stale bread… plus a bruised apple. I had to bring the core home after school and she inspected it. If there was too much apple on the now brown core, I had to stand there and eat it.
