Bushido is the way of the samurai, that is, of a real man. It would seem that everything is true, but this is far from the case. Yes, men have always predominated among samurai, but there were also women among them, the so-called Onna-Bugeisha.
Women samurai not only had their traditions but also special-edged weapons and special fighting techniques, tailored specifically to female physiology. Thanks to this, women could fight on equal terms with men. Sometimes it happened that female samurai even became full-fledged commanders, leading armies of thousands.
The Japanese term Onna-Bugeisha, which is used to refer to female samurai, literally means a combination of the words “woman” and “person of martial arts.” This was the name given to women whose fighting skills went beyond ordinary ceremonial traditions. Onna-Bugaisha, unlike other women, could easily be found on the battlefield, dressed in armor covered in the blood of enemies. They took full part in the combat life of the samurai class.

If male samurai averaged between 5'-3" and 5'-5", female samurai would have been around 4'-11".

They understood perfectly well that men were much stronger, and in a simple sword fight, even very skilled ones, would not have much of a chance.

But the history of the emergence of female warriors in Japan goes back to a time when even the samurai themselves did not exist.

These times touch on the very beginning of a new era, when many diverse communities operated in Japan, united by common ideas or crafts. Some of these communities, for some reason, consisted only of women.

Technically speaking, Women were not samurai. They were ‘buke no onna’ - literally, “women of warrior households.” They did not receive fiefs or stipends from a lord or obtain posts in the shogunate or domain governments. Although some of these women studied martial arts, mostly the naginata, only very few ever participated in war.
