This sounds like great news! I have to admit that I had only supported Ontario through the Old Hickory knives in the past. Earlier this summer I had broken a machete cleaning up around the place. I got on KZfaq and researched machetes. Dave at ReallyBigMonkey1 had recommended the Sp 53 and the Kukri Machete so I bought the SP53… and then I found out about Ontario closing its doors. I freaked because the SP 53 was performing like a champ. So I bought the Kukri Machete and a couple RAT 1 and RAT 2 folders in D2. Hopefully will be able to support the new Ontario/Blue Ridge Knives company.

Good news and update, Jacob. Thank you for taking the time to post this. Speaking of Queen, my granddad gave me a Queen Steel #9 (large stockman) for Christmas in 1966. I carried it everyday on the farm thru high school and each day all thru college. I rarely carry it now, as it's too important to take any chances with it.

That is really cool! Queen was an interesting brand that made a lot of changes over the years as it switched hands. It would have been cool to see it make a comeback but the brand name might not have enough brand power to make it worth it.

I'm very very stoked. I wish them all the best and look forward to many purchases in the years to come. My experience using knives hard for fun while doing blue collar work suggests that switching from spring steel to 420hc is basically keeping the chipping resistance but otherwise trading edge retention for corrosion resistance. That's a trade I myself would never make unless I was diving or if it was for a rarely if ever used backup weapon blade I didn't want to have to worry about rusting or chipping, like my EDC'd for years now Luzon. I personally made a nickleson file filet knife for my friend who was sick of quickly dulling rapalas when I found out old hickory filets had switched from 440c to 420hc. I agree 420hc gets a largely undeserved bad reputation, but I think the finer details of the matter mean a lot to some of us, and that's something I'm hoping Ontario can find it's way back to caring about more.
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors
@Thepreppersbunkeroutdoors 10 ай бұрын
Details absolutely matter and swapping steels on the dl was an awful idea- but 420hc when properly treated should hold an edge about the same if not better than 5160. Toughness is likely a little lower. I would have to see Dr Thomas' charts and info at knife steel nerds to be sure.

Hey Jacob. Glad you made this video. Shows me there’s still people who care about the right things in life. I love ontario knives. And am glad to hear they are back on track. Minus the dirty tricks behind the scenes. Totally agree on the 420 hc as well. Cheap crap, tough as nails, stainless as hell, and easy to sharpen. Still trying to figure out how you can go wrong with it myself. But it’s a dirty trick to switch steel and not tell anyone.

RD7 and RDNS7 5160 field knives are great. The formula 420HC that OKC used was really tough! I got several of the 420HC Woodsman I gave away because I knew they had a need for them, most use them as the butcher knife profile as heavy butcher kitchen knives, but they are great for field use and large critter cutting season use. They are TOUGH if you keep to knife duties, not stones and cinder blocks. My ONE 5160 Woodsman works great as well and no one gets that one!

I’ve ordered 3 , RTAK II Knives off of Amazon. 2 of them were noticeably bent and the blade grind was horrible. 1 of them was really good quality as far as I can tell. I was always uncomfortable when ordering an Ontario Knife because I was never sure what the quality control was going to be & what steel I would actually end up receiving. Even so,… I could see the potential and being made in USA for the low price was very tempting. Like you, I’m hoping Ontario markets more to the civilian consumer, does better quality control & keeps the prices reasonable.

So as far as that goes when sharpening most of what you will be able to judge is overall hardness- However there is a VERY wide range of things that could be absolutely F'ed in the heat treat at one hardness, especially with 1095 which can easily have or developed micro fracturing around carbides. But anyways without getting too nerdy about it- Have fun with it!

Training people to do quality work efficiently takes time and money, I think that Ontario should sub some manual operations overseas, like Mexico, El Salvador or even as far away as Argentina where there are already skilled workers in need of steady work. Other than that it would still be mostly made in the USA.

Ontario already has PLENTY of items that are imported from Taiwan, and they already have, at least to some degree, trained employees in need of steady work. Our economy promotes exporting our own jobs then people complain about inflation and the diminishing quality of available work as they spend every dollar they make doing retail therapy with imported goods. OKC should move out of New York but there is plenty of infrastructure for skilled labor here

I have an Ontario RD 7 and it is a mixed bag. I bought it back in 2010 and it came dull as a hardware store axe. The canvas micarta handles were like bricks and the sheath was one of those terrible MOLLE parachute rated monstrosities that the knife rattled around in loudly. I also have an Ontario trench dagger looking knife that I bought in 2008 that has a false edge on one side and the blade side was ground at around 45 degrees. There are grind marks all over it and it looks like something made in India for malls. The trench knife has a rubber handle that is comfortable, but the guard is not made from anything solid, but rather is simply molded rubber. Both knives have ridiculously tough and thick blades though. I want to like them, but they need to up their standards a bit. I want to see low profile kydex sheaths or equivalent and sharp blades at a bare minimum.

If they don't want to go out of business (a business in which the brand was known for defective products) they can't honor the previous brands warranty. You just rekindled an american brand that was good at some point but then went to piss. Are you going to invest about 6 million dollars in the equipment and tooling making it all from scratch to remake their existing models which were unprofitable just to replace those models which were purchased with money you never saw? Did Harley honor the warranty given by AMF when every Harley on the road was known as a total pos and the new brand had to make a totally new bike from the ground up? A lifetime warranty is only good for the company behind it. The new OKC will be exactly that- a new OKC. Yes, they bought the name. Lord willing with that name somebody will be making awesome American made knives with their own lifetime warranty. Hoping the new brand will warranty the pos $50 knife that you bought a decade or two before hand is childish.
