Definitely a shame but Americans also work in the imports business (a small consolation). A shame how overpriced American manufacturing is now due our overbearing government. Also, Ontario's QC was very hit or miss. My SP5 was flawless but my SP53 and SP01 needed tons of work reprofiling the edge. They essentially came completely unsharpened. Probably a 75 degree edge angle.

They had a tiger by the tail with the Rat 1 and Rat 2 folders. They were (are) so popular - I felt they had a huge missed opportunity with that knife. With the explosion of the EDC folding knife world, they could've done so much with it - different steels, premium versions, etc. People would've bought them up.
@josephlilley9249
@josephlilley9249 11 ай бұрын
I agree 100% man. Kind of like how Spyderco does with some of their models. But u like Ontario Spyderco was able to recognize how popular certain knives are and use it to their advantage and started making sprint runs and limited editions and even innovating on the same design as well. It's unfortunate but it happens with a lot of knife companies. It's a hard business these days especially for cheaper knives bc the market is just so saturated with thousands of different great budget knives now a days with companies like civivi and others.

That’s such a shame. I remember when I worked for Busse Combat Knife Co. in Ohio, I felt so lucky because I was working with good,honest guys. The knife industry was full of fly-by-night guys who would go to companies like Ontario and subcontract them to make knives for them, and then never pay. So Ontario would get stuck for the cost of labor, heat treating, and abrasives, etc. Luckily they’d have the tooling and lots of steel so they could make up some of the set up costs by pounding out some of their own versions of the knives they made for other companies. But Ontario was a good company with good designs of their own too. Like you said, they were a good introductory level American-made knife supplier.

They sure don't sound like they have any intention of restarting the Ontario Knife factory as he said in the video. The new owner is a knife wholesaler of many brands. Meaning they don't sell to the public. Probably bought them as much for the Ontario Knife name, as anything. They could then go put that name on anything they want, as has been done to so many fine old USA companies, Sadly. As he said in the video, they may use the old factory for local, small, budding knife makers, etc, who knows.

I'm sentimental about it because it was the first knife my wife put a lanyard on when covid broke out I had to continue to go to work things were very scary no one knew what was going to happen. I'd leave home though knowing I had my rat 1 called gray and the laynard my wife put on it for me that is still on it sappy maybe but it got me through the day and home from work.

I can see Blue Ridge continuing to offer the RAT folders since they were made overseas. Just continue buying them from that manufacturer and keep them in your catalogue. The rest of the line is probably going the way of Schrade. The name and designs will be licensed and the product made overseas. Recently I was in a local store and I saw an offering in Ontario’s ADK line. I looked it up online and found the blade was 420HC with an HRC of 48 to 52. WUT? I think I have butter knives harder than that. I passed.

yes, but the Taiwan knives were the next best thing to USA made. Much, better than mainland Chinese products. Its always been that way, that I can remember since the 80s at least. I sold tools and equipment my whole life and when the big switch to China happened in the 80s it was all junk, I couldn't even compare the 2 countries quality. Except for night and day maybe. Their 40.00 knives would be way, way, more costly made anywhere else, sadly. I just picked up a couple RATII and a bunch of their USA 1095 Old Hickory Kitchen knives. I guess that's a possibility huh, I'm fortunate to have purchased the Buck Ground Combat knife. They stopped making that blade, why I have no clue because it's awesome. I'm still not sure.

The RAT Model 1 and 2 are made in Taiwan. So they may likely remain in production by Blue Ridge Knives. Maybe ESEE or Ka-Bar or Gerber or Cold Steel will buy Ontario's knife patterns at the asset liquidation auction. Several years ago, I emailed Ontario customer support twice asking about where to get replacement nylon washers. I never received a reply. What a complete contrast to Kershaw and Ka-Bar. Both Kershaw and Ka-Bar sent me replacement parts (washers, springs, pivots, and pocket clips) at no charge to me. My sense is that the Randall group was not satisfied with the quality of the RAT knives from Ontario. That's why they stopped working with Ontario and created ESEE, new (but similar) knife patterns, and switched to Rowen for manufacturing.

Wow. I just got my rat 2 out of the safe today. Never used it since I purchased it. It’s a wonderful knife for the money. I’m shocked at the news.

That sucks for the folks who work there. The folks at Blue ridge knives are good people too. They are local to me. They do a lot for the community.

Sorry to see Ontario go. I will forever cherish my RAT models 1 and 2. Unfortunately I lost my favorite Ontario fixed blade, the SP46, and can't replace it now. Which brings me to a problem that I see in many companies, not just knife makers: not listening to customers. When a company sees users regularly modifying or upgrading their products, it means there's a problem that needs to be fixed. Lots of KZfaq videos were made on how to modify Ontario sheaths that didn't even fit the blades they came with. How hard would it have been to produce a shorter sheath for the SP46? Same with the blocky handles of the RAT fixed blades. How hard would it have been make them a bit rounder? Some would say just buy a custom sheath/scales, but nobody wants to do that with a relatively inexpensive knife. Fixing these design flaws might have raised the price a tiny bit but would have made the products much more appealing.

at least you mentioned their best products. Definitely the sp-8 and the bowie for sure. sp-8 is really reminiscent of a Japanese hatchet (I own the silky one so no need for the sp8) and it is a fantastic shape for de-limbing trees. Also a tad safer than a hatchet because with a wider cutting surface there's more forgiveness instead of swinging into your own leg. A hatchet still splits a bit better though with all the focus on a smaller point. The bowie is probably the most useful of the 2, bowies are great all rounders

The SP-8 and SP-53 are both beasts that are exceedingly tough. The SP-6 is (was) a good way to get a good blade similar to a Randall Model 1. The SP-5 is maybe not a great knife to beat on, but is a surprisingly quick handling 10" blade that is much lighter than the SP-10. The RAT folders in both sizes are a lot of knife for the money, and they have all four pocket clip positions available. The machetes need a bit of work, as is true of most machetes, but they are solid tools. I speak from experience on all but the SP-10. I will really miss OKC if things don't go well, and I wish the best for and honor those employees who built damn good knives!

Ontario was known for their straight razors, back in the day. I have several nice vintage razors from them, as well as other makers in the region that are now gone or no longer make razors. Geneva/Genco, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, Union, and other classic American brands.

Blue Ridge bought the name/IP, we'll see what the do with it. I assume the Rat 1&2 will stay in production as it's made in Tiawan. Most of the rest of the models are scrap metal. 2:04

The thing I'm really going to miss is the old hickory knives. They were tough little camping knives that were affordable way for common people to get their hands on 1095 and 1070 steel for$20 or less.

Go to the local hardware store and get them while you can. I love my Old Hickory and my local family hardware store has them cheap. I'm going to purchase a good portion of their inventory so I have extras and I can give as a nice gift to family and friends for Christmas.
