Ive been buying and using Knives for the last 45 years. The qualities of this kind of blade design are very forgiving. The sharpening properties are so important in a knife. This blade design is VERY easy to keep sharp. This steel will "hold" and edge well enough but isn't hard to "touch up" with a good stone. As he stated the blade design is capable of doing a lot of different tasks. Much like a Firearm , No single Knife will do EVERYTHING perfectly. This design is Good with small tasks as well as a lot of larger ones. In other words, If ALL you had was this blade and a good stone, you could do a Hell of a lot worse for sure. Good review, Given Information was good and It appears as you are qualified to give opinions. THANKS !!

Thanks for this video Gideon I have huge problems with knives due to missing fingers on both hands, after losing my knife out in the desert, I am looking for the same handle as my knife I lost, and the Rat 5 and 7 meets my needs, so I want to say a huge thank you to you, for this video, you have saved me a week of searching on the internet, calling knife companies, endless Emails back and forth. and saved me lots of tedium and time. If you ever find your self in AZ and want to go for a hike I would be more than happy to come with you and act as your guide. Once again thanks for this video, it really helped.

I have had a rat 5 for 6 years and it is an absolute Beast. From cutting my Apple to chopping firewood it doesn't all at the sacrifice of being a little heavy. People hate on the sheath all day long, it has lasted six years no issues and if I could post a picture to this to show you how much I beat the crap out of that knife you would all be impressed

I honestly think people are forgetting the purpose of a knife. All these tasks shown can be done more easily with a sharp axe like a Small Forest Axe. A knife should be used for finer tasks like skinning and feather sticks. Right? I know the axe is heavier, but it's better than spending all day chopping with a heavy bladed knife IMO. Great for a survival kit. Bad for a planned outdoor trip where you need to process wood.

Dan Wild agreed, just bought a rather delicate knife as I was sick of sacrificing fitting performance to stability. I do consider an axe unessecary as well tho unless it's for a large amount of time or you're with a big group and you can distribute tasks and gear so everyone can perform his task most effective to for example provide an entire basecamp with firewood. Otherwise I would even hesitate to even take a hatchet unless there is going to be rain because otherwise there wouldn't be a lot of wood splitting as I could just use twigs. Otherwise I can understand the demand for a jack of all trades, some people and even me depending of what I'm doing right now have different priorities than bushcraft and don't want to carry too much

It's not about what the knife is designed to do and not to do, its about survival, if you are stuck in the middle of nowhere with nothing but a Rat 5 or other similar knives, you need to know it "can" do what you need it too, not specifically "designed to do" but "can", so you're in a survival situation and you dont have an axe or hatchet, but you do have a rat 5 and you need to build a fire and shelter, you can do it

QC has improved. I had to return a pilot survival knife because the grind would not allow sharpening of the tip. It was made in 2011. The replacement, made in 2013, was fine. A note with the new knife said they were vamping up QC, and I believe it. Other newer Ontario knives had good fit and finish, and prices are better for comparable knives/brands.

Hey Aaron! Excellent review as always. Reguarding the loose fitting nylon sheaths that come with many good knives, I have found that by passing the lanyard under the accessory pouch flap and then snapping the nylon retainers over the lanyard, you get a nice secure retention. Just fyi.

Just used mine in the woods today....chops, cuts, didn't really baton but dug a little in the ground. why do we choose to abuse our knives?..Good in the kitchen works well on apples, meat, you name it! in other words a fantastic camp tasker. Wove a 5/16 in paracord handle. Stripped blade.

I'd love to see a ESEE vs RAT comparison vid. I like how there's a few differences in the models giving us more choices. If you want a 5" knife and you want a quarter inch thick blade- you go with ESEE, but if you want 3/16th and a chiol then go RAT. If you want precise finish, go with ESEE and if you want to save a couple bucks then go with RAT. How would you compare this with the BK10?

Say Heah Aaron, O. K. C. defenetly make good knives, But years ago I got the Ranger RD-9 and the Ranger Afghan, both in the 5160, Both are bomb proof, Infact I had a great experience with that steel, I really thought because the blade Curved alot it was ruined, I'm happy to say, I still use that combo and tgeir still serving me well. Job well done, Thanx.

Such a shame that Ontario was sold. All ontario knives, including the RAT 5 are now subjected to a massive price increase as they are currently on a production hiatus. I contacted both Ontario (which I have many knives from) and BRK, which is the distributor that bought the company, and haven't gotten a response back in regards to them ever resuming production of the Rat-5. They're going for around 120-140$ now, which is a shame because at 70-80$ there was nothing like these.
@tymccutchen

Seen them as high as $200 in new condition.
@michaelsantoro170
@michaelsantoro170 2 ай бұрын
@@tymccutchen yeah, it's absurd for what the knife is. You could very easily make your own for that price point. The new owners of OKC had responded a few months ago saying production should resume by April for their old hickory knives, but even those aren't back in production yet. My concern is that they're going to discontinue a lot of the products that made the brand worthwhile, or completely increase the price of knives across the board. You can already see that the old 7" butchers knife, which was one my favorites from them, has been replaced with a cheaper steel, with obviously quality defects, at twice the cost. It's really a shame.

Just google search (knife grinds) and you will find sites that have good descriptions with pictures to help you out, my favorites are Saber Grind also known as (Flat Grind) and Full Flat Grind also know as (FFG). Pros and Cons to every type of grind out there. I have never owned a convex grind but hope to get a Fallkniven soon and try that out as well.

I have to take a second to talk about this knife. II would not suggest buying this knife not at this price point. Don’t get me wrong it’s a nice knife but there are too many flaws for this price point. It’s a glorified camp knife with a fat kitchen knife handle. I have extra large to double extra large hands. It’s a little too chunky for me. I don’t understand the whole concept of a pointed pommel? especially when anybody can pick up a rock to smash something, why would you hold a knife in your hand when you can use a rock? The rhino liner coating on this blade will not allow you to do any kind of food prep you can forget slicing a tomato and it hinders your ability to Baton firewood. Slowing a blade down when you’re trying to cut through something has the opposite effect of what you want. I believe they use this coding just for color to attract your eye. I would not recommend this knife. I wish I had a refund.
