🥳 Looking for a cost-effective and space-saving alternative to traditional microgreen trays? Join us as we share our success with growing microgreens in sprouting trays! These trays are not only cheaper but also slightly smaller than the standard 10x20 trays, offering a convenient advantage. However, it's important to note that sprouting trays come with their own challenges as they're designed for sprouts, not microgreens. To help you overcome any obstacles, we've created a step-by-step tutorial on achieving successful microgreen grows using sprouting trays. Check out our blog for additional insights and key points.👨‍🌾👩‍🌾🥳

TIP FOR GREEN AMAZON SPROUTING TRAYS: Ive found it helpful to use a black sharpie marker to mark a 1" fill line (measured from above the bottom), which greatly simplifies maintaining a proper fill level when bottom watering - you want the water level with the bottom of the mesh tray. Getting the fill level right is CRITICAL for these trays, because depending on how much you underfill them, the sprouts have to work longer and harder to reach the water level, and that not only slows down their growth, but tends to stunt or even kill off many of the struggling radicals. If you see brown or black in the radicals, that's BAD.
@ireneb3433
@ireneb3433 Жыл бұрын
another suggestion for finding the right fill level could be to place white net tray into bottom green tray EMPTY OF ANY GROW MEDIUM OR SEEDS; then grab a measuring jug filled with water and start emptying into the tray WHILE CAREFULLY WATCHING TO SEE WHEN THE WATER LEVEL STARTS TO VISIBLY TOUCH THE BOTTOM OF THE WHITE MESH TRAY. Then either (i) take note of the volume of water required to get to that level, or (ii) carefully remove the white tray and make a mark on the bottom tray with either a sharp exacto knife or a sharpie, to indicate where the water level needs to be.

Yep! Exacting accuracy!

@kimalexander8378 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Making a water level mark on the outside of the tray can be helpful, especially when first filling the reservoir tray. However, at subsequent checks, with white tray lifted, less water will be needed due to the increased number of radicals, and later roots, entering the water, and the overall volume increases. Subsequent water fillings will need to be somewhere “just below” the initial water fill line so that when the white tray is lowered again, the water level will be at the mark initially indicated.

@@cathyphegley7848 Another tip: you can sow seeds smaller than the mesh holes on the white tray insert by buying some reusable stainless steel mesh of the desired aperture (ex: 1mm), and cutting it to fit. Misting with water just before sowing also helps limit dropthru, if the sizes are close.

Pre-soak your growing medium, it keeps your seed spreading efforts from being "messed up" by post-seeding watering. Especially if you don't have a fine flow watering system like that seen in this video.

I'd like to thank you for the excellent, informative and charmingly presented videos. They have helped me enormously. I will very much appreciate it if you can help me further by answering a question on ambient temperature. I'm setting up a grow station in my garage for home consumption and gifts to family and neighbours and so on, about ten trays, grown under full spectrum 300W equivalent LED lights. I'm based in Northern England and last night the temperature in the garage fell to -4C (25F) and the highest daytime temperature is currently 5C (41F). I can construct a heated propagator-type base to keep the tray at about 18C (65F) but raising ambient temperature significantly will be difficult and expensive. Can you advise what the minimum air temperature is, assuming an 18C base/grow medium temperature, to allow the greens to thrive? An estimate will be good enough. Many thanks in advance.

Just got those trays today online. Tried with my own tray and paper towels it was just like sprouts, not microgreens. But I want to grow them in water, not dirt. Will look up other videos to find out how.

Ya they are sprouts before they turn to microgreens. It takes like 7 to 14 days before the greens show and you have to do alot of steps besides sprinkle on a towel and water.

Very helpful because these are the trays I've been using the most. Great tips on how to manage them. What is the nozzle that you are using for spraying, please? Also, I use a very thin layer of wet organic all cotton unbleached cheesecloth under the coir to keep it from going through the mesh to the bottom tray. Just cause in my living-room-windowsill growspace it's easier to not have to clean out that green tray.

Thanks for the video. I had been wondering about these trays. Since these are mesh trays, would you also do a video on a no medium microgreen with these green trays? What kind of microgreens can we do with no medium?

i use those trays with coco coir but i keep the green trays underneath because the roots will go down far enough so that when you bottom water the water does not contact the coco... just enough water for the roots and there is enough water to go all the way to harvest... the coco will actually dry out... you will never need to top water or worry about overwatering... kratky method... also when i seed i will water them deep and then you don't have to touch them for 3 days and the empty space in the lower trays with the weight allows the roots plenty of room to lengthen and air in that empty space keeps them from getting water logged...

Thanks for sharing this ^^ is this kind of tray is suitable for hydroponic/ not using any soil? I've been trying to plant sunflower with this kind of tray and it's quite challenging :( Thank you ^^

We keep ours lightly watered so that it sticks together more and doesn’t fall through the mesh tray. If it is really dry, it will create a lot of dust and fall though... hope that helps! 🤗🌱🌱

Hello guys, great work on the videos, im learning a ton from your channel. Love the organisation and tidiness in your results! Do you have any thoughts about water PH? (i know you mentioned before that 5.5 - 6.5 is ideal) It would be interesting to see how different PH levels affect microgreen growth (with/without added nutrients perhaps?)

Thank you for this helpful video!! Do I need a grow light for this or would natural direct sunlight in a windowsill or even outside work?
@OnTheGrow
@OnTheGrow 2 жыл бұрын
Glad that you found our video helpful!! Either would work. Grow lights would give you the best / most even results. Windowsill will work too, as long as there is enough light. If you go with the outside route, I'd suggest having a shelf / place for the greens to grow where they are not in direct sunlight. :D

New to your channel and love it! I am looking for a simple, good quality coir product that I can use on a small scale without being concerned about excess salt content that would require extra steps to remove, which as a beginner, I am not prepared to do. I see your Amazon page has 3 coir choices. Is there any reason to be concerned with salt content with any of these products?

Just love this tutorial but as a beginner not yet planting my 1st tray, have so many questions! Where do you get the coco-coir in larger bags? Do you need to add any nutrients to spray water? Do you need to use heat mats as well as grow-lights for indoors (my situation). So many questions and would love some feed back suited to Australia.
@jeremypatten4077
@jeremypatten4077 2 жыл бұрын
1)You can get coco-coir from Home Depot. You mix it with water and it will expand. 2) you technically do not need any nutrition. The seed has everything in it. But by adding nutrients for plants will grow faster and healthier. But it’s not needed. 3) if growing indoors and your growing area is about 70-75 and humidity around 50-60 you will be fine. A heating met probably would be needed if your growing area is cold and not stable.
