Big guy with bigger heart! My dad was a 'brickie', and in common with many in his trade back in the sixties and seventies, he spent most of his free time (and money) in the pub. He never physically mis-treated my mum, but gave her the bare minimum to bring up four kids. My biggest regret though, was watching other kids dads playing football and other games with them, while he was in the boozer.

Did a x2 year course in plastering at the Deptford skill centre now the Lewisham college South East London , I learnt enough to crack on but in 1988/1989 The Acid House kicked right in and I missed a few classes here and there as I would be still coming down and felt a bit Digital 🕊 💊 I still do a bit of plastering here and there but now at 54 I suffer with rotator cuff muscle damage to the left shoulder … BUT Watching these uploads is a pleasure and he knows his onions and really does explain all situations and graft in layman’s turns and it’s really easy to absorb .. YEAH I’m in with both feet … Brother you would be a fantastic tutor PURE TEACHING MATERIAL especially for the younger teens as this would give them that much needed guidance And I say that with the upmost RESPECT .. Keep up the good work ( GRAFT AND UPLOADS as your supporters are out here … HAPPY DAYS …. London Bermondsey calling..

My dad did all the ceilings in the house by roller extra thick and then went dabbing the roller up and down. I had to patch in an airing cupboard when it was removed and a polystyrene ceiling rose that started to break up due to the weight of Hoover and iron flexes being dangled from the fitting had pulled the plaster away from the lats. I came along and tried to remove the polystyrene and a 2 ft ballon-shaped section came down. I made a right mess of the ceiling and it resembles an early pregnant stomach, but the bloody thing is rock hard. The paint effect I managed to somewhat recreate with a stipple/basil brush, but that ruined the expensive brush. 30 years on I still have the hairy bump in the ceiling. :) The airing cupboard turned out a bit better and even managed to match the fall of the eves, still not a great job. Sometimes when you haven't the money to get someone in, you have two choices, leave it or have a go. I wish I had left the ceiling rose until better times, but it is a feature :) Great video and I will try your tech next time.

Hey Kirk...just to say how much I enjoyed this video...took my mind off our own problems property wise ( and age wise..) and when energy comes back I may have a go at some....that lath ceiling could have been a nightmare but you sorted it (even using ‘modern’ materials) ..... Glad to say that the old lime stuff is now very available..but somewhat upgraded for more time conscious use..I.e. NHL limes ..but I would have had to think carefully about which strength to use..1/ or 2 or 3 grade..could be useful to research as there is surprisingly Many houses still with lots o lath in situ..The Old lime putty very available and very light but slow drying..so I guess when you said ‘maybe a touch of gypsum in the original lime plaster’ they used that to get a bit of a set ?..Not sure that’s a good combo, but hey, the ‘old tradesman’ knew a bit most of the time through donkeys of handed down tricks..Found it fascinating to see as I have done some traditional lime work...but main thing is you did it anyway ! The lady must have been so pleased..Many thanks..

top tip on Monocouche render scratching the final coat if you are doing this in winter you can do it the same day just get a small gas bottle and a touch gun this is what flat roofers use for touch on felt let it go off for 1 or 2 hours then lightly put the flame all over it do 2 meters at a time that will get the moisture out of the top coat and should be ok to do a scratch the same day saves you going back the following day i done this method years ago you only need a light flame from the gun just comes with practice get the balance right hope you like this tip

‘Salt of the earth’ that’s what I would describe you as. We use to ‘bag it’ to get a similar stippled effect. Scrunch up a plaggy bag until it was a tightish fist size ball, then just touch and pull off, or twist and pull for a swirl and central stipple.

My life as a young lad was a little bit of the opposite, my mum was a bit keen. Sometimes she was lovely, then other times id get the wooden spoon or the pallet knife on my legs, or sometimes the strap. But nothing off my dad. this bathroom Im doing has lath and plaster, lime plaster as you say and cedar laths ! Smells wonderful when tyou trim it off with an angle grinder. Whole ceiling had to come down, thousands of little tacks and hundreds of clout nails driven into the hardest ceiling joists Ive ever seen. Probably hardened with age, but very close grained, no pine smell when cut. Lime plaster on the walls too, still not rock hard after 100 years but stuck like shite on a shovel to the brickwork. Impressive stuff.

The SBR would also help stop water absorbing into the wood, so limiting shrinking as it drys out, you did a perfect job there mate. I would of just used bonding for both coats, but would of put cement in the mix to make it set quicker, also I find the cement makes the plaster set harder, for the texture finish, I might of made a slurry/watery mix of setting plaster and dabbed it on with a brush. I see you are using a stainless steel trowel now.

The original plaster would have had horse hair reienforcing plaster doesn't have that making it more prone to cracking i cut out the shape of the hole to put a piece of plaster board then used fibre glass tape in the gap to reinforce the join. In N Z as we don't have the mixes available in the UK. You have to be careful with french plaster or plaster of paris joining yo modern gypsum board so i paint the edge of the old surface doesn't react turning the modern filler to powder over time.

The way these things “save fuel” and create more power is they take off things that should be there. There are safety things inside cars to make sure they last. Retuning them will take them away from factory spec and it can cause more emissions, risk damage to the engine etc. it’s up to you if you want to risk it but don’t take it back to the dealer if something goes bang.
@Onthetrowel

Hey mate, this was one of my original concerns but after raising this with TDI they assured me that the ECU is what stops the engine going beyond safe limits and because the vehicle isn't being remapped then the ECU still has control over the engine. Basically all this little box will do is get the best out of the engine within its safe operating limits. Best thing to do is check out their site mate, they explain it better than me.

Did you have the old Artex checked for asbestos? Interested because I couldn't find any mention in the vid about it. It would be a good thing in any videos like this to at least do a brief PSA and spread awareness of the potential risks, even if the job you're on is tested and safe. Good job with what you had to work with though.

Kirk with the tuning box fill the tank reset the trip meter then when empty refill divide liters to gallons and divide the mileage, the mpg readouts on the dash are only a guide, I had a box on a subaru and the dash showed high MPG but the reality of refill/per mile the car was no more efficient, they generally fool the fuel rail pressure sensor to add fuel , hence more power. here's hoping it is more fuel efficient for you anyhow.

Kirk do you think you should have an R&D asbestos survey before you disturb any textured coated ceilings !!

Ultimately mate if they find asbestos then the job will still need doing anyway and the ceiling had already been disturbed when it fell down mate

Interesting how they have changed the name of the lathing hammer to plasterers hammer or drywall hammer, suppose it's a rare thing now to chop laths to size.

In my house i take the whole thing down, everything and then put plasterboard on the joists and plaster on top.

I think that pattern was originally obtained by putting a plastic carrier bag over the trowel and sort of dabbling the plaster

The carrier bag was best used for the broken leather effect, when done correctly looked classy compared to the different stipple effects when artex was in its prime.

Ain't them ceilings supposed to be textured with paint and a cling filmed sponge not the actual plaster!

Kirk, i've alway wondered, if you knew nothing about Plastering but as a youngster if you was offered to either to start out as a labourer, then down the line becoming a contractor or try learning how to becme a plasterer, without knowing anything about plastering ???🤔
