I did not grow up a Lutheran, but a different protestant evangelical church. Later in life I came to just love the Evangelical Lutheran Church. I was a guest instrumentalist in many over the years across America. These indeed are great examples of some of the great Hymns of the Christian church, and have lyrics that both preach the gospel, and doctrine, but raise us up in times we need encourgement.

Music is not worship in and of itself, but rather just a tool for worship. The instrumentation are just tools. Music styles are also tools - tools to convey emotion. Often times we associate musical styles with experiences, but that does not mean those styles are intrinsically good or bad. Many of the hymns are old bar tunes with different words, yet we associate that music with worship. Please be careful not to associate modern Christian music with something of the world. You can use a hammer to build a house, or tear one down. Let us use all our tools for worship.

Daveinet , thank you for an interesting appraisal of hymn singing. Yes, before I point the finger at a fault in a hymn I should remember that Jesus sees the heart , and someone can be drawn to Him in different ways. I do like the marching hymns. Everything s bold , and good and bad is seen as black and white. Lord Jesus ,give us boldness to speak out against abortion. You said, Lord Jesus ‘You shall not kill ‘. Every child is precious in your eyes. What we hear in whispers, let us shout from the rooftops. Amen ? Maranatha, come Lord Jesus save us from our sins. Save the babies, help the ladies and motivate the lazies to act .

One can only wonder what Arthur Sullivan, a man who was born and brought up in Lambeth, a poor, working class suburb of South London, would say if he could hear his possibly most famous hymn tune sung so beautifully and with such verve and commitment - and accompanied so magnificently by a truly fabulous organ and organist. He would shake his head in disbelief!! Arthur Seymour Sullivan: 1842 - 1900.

Are you Anglican as in the Church of England? I had English friends, now both deceased, and we would talk of similarities and differences in our faiths. I was raised in Southern Baptist churches. One big difference is that the Anglican Church furnishes the ministers to the churches, where in the Southern Baptist Association, each minister is hired by that church. He is their employee and they alone have the power to hire or fire him. So we had some long discussions over faith in God and the role of the church in that faith.

I used to watch Dr. Kennedy's show, he was certainly very good. As I watched him I'd look @ that magnificent organ behind him & wish I had more opportunity to hear it played. Naturally, the emphasis was always on HIS preaching. I am sure they played it often for many hymns in his actual services. I guess this is an example of how Protestantism is the cult of the preacher. Listening to someone talk about God is more important then actually worshipping him w/ songs & prayers.
@jlandles
@jlandles 9 жыл бұрын
If you feel this way, you wouldn't feel very comfortable in the Early Church either where the proclamation of the world was the centrepiece of worship and evangelism. In Protestantism, the purity of ancient worship has been (to varying degrees) restored with the renewed emphasis on the word. Even Protestant hymnody is squarely based on the scriptures, which is why they are so powerful.
@VictorLepanto
@VictorLepanto 9 жыл бұрын
jlandles B/4 you talk about the Early Church Fathers, you'd do well to...like...actually read them. No. You could not possibly be more wrong. The center of Early Christian worship was the sacrifice of the Eucharist. Actually read the Fathers. As Newman said, "Do be deep into history is to cease to be Protestant." That is why the leaders of the state churches in Europe (Protestants of course) all went to Liberalism. If you can't find any real historical basis for your nations official religion, it will naturally be a scandal to many & many did indeed loose their faith, even as they made their living hypocritically as clergy.

I attended local public school through 4th grade. When I was in second grade I came home singing this song. My mom wondered where I heard and replied at school. She told me sometimes it was thought of anti-Catholic, which in the mid-1940's it may have been. She also counseled me to sing it at will. My parents were intellectual Catholics and supported ecumenism before it was proclaimed by Vatican II.
