I prefer to avoid working on Mainline, Replica and early Dapol models but this Mainline Dean Goods loco is tender driven with the same motor acquired by Airfix. So I agreed to take this on to repair for a chap called Kevin.

Bill goes Great Western! You might not be able to justify a Dean Goods in Scotland, but you could have a GWR pannier tank. I believe BR sent a few to Scotland. Another enjoyable video. Rob PS just found this by « 14D » on the LNER forum: « There were two 'most northerly' pannier tanks: Nos. 1646 and 1649. 1646 was moved from Croes Newydd to 60C Helmsdale, in February 1957 to replace a Highland Railway 0-4-4T that for decades, had worked the Dornoch - Mound branch line but irreparably broke a driving axle. To allow for a spare engine 1649 moved to Helmsdale from Bristol St.Philips Marsh shed in July 1958. When not used on the Dornoch branch the tanks were usually found at Helmsdale where they did shunting, that duty sometimes extending to Dingwall. After closure of the Dornoch line in June 1960 the two panniers undertook random other work - for example, shunting at Inverness - such duties being maintained until the duo moved to 63A Perth shed with an official transfer date of August 1962. Both were placed in store there, being formally withdrawn on 29th December 1962, but remained at 63A until at least September 1963 before moving to the ex-NBR Works at Cowlairs for scrapping. There are countless online pictures of this pair of exiles north of the Border, at work and at rest. » So there you go, 16XX 0-6-0PT’s in Scotland !

Interesting. I could re-livery my GWR Pannier to BR and number it 1646. I really need to get my airbrush working. Thanks for that.

@@oobill depends if it’s a 57XX or not. The16XX were quite a bit smaller. You could always imagine they exported a 57XX and autocoach to run your branch line.

Peter's Spares does have replacement gears for the Mainline split chassis models. I replaced the gears and axles on one of my Mainline Royal Scots with a set from Peter's Spares. The Mainline gears were pretty poor, as you say, so they can definitely need to be replaced. When Bachmann took over the Mainline toolings, they fitted much better gears.
@robstrains8711
@robstrains8711 Жыл бұрын
The early Bachmann where no better as they used the same parts. It wasn't until they started retooling that they improved the parts.
@kleedhamhobby
@kleedhamhobby Жыл бұрын
@@robstrains8711 That's not exactly true. Well, it depends what you mean by 'retooling'. I have Bachmann models that still have the split chassis and still have the same basic body casting as the Mainline version, but which have much better motor and gears - the same basic configuration, but the gears are better made, wider and more solid, and the motor is better. The Mainline gears were narrow and not made from very good material, so they tended to wear badly. Bachmann did fix that, at least in the Bachmann split chassis models that I have (Jubilees, Royal Scots).
@oobill
@oobill Жыл бұрын
The very, very early Bachmann ones are the same but they very quickly redesigned in new motors and gears that are infinitely better. They called this their "Super Smooth Fly Wheel Gear Drive Motor" and published this on the boxes. They run fine and are worth buying and servicing with replacement axles. Also the crank pins unscrew on these Bachmanns unlike the Mainline ones that have to be pulled and never fit as well after refitting. I wouldn't buy a split chassis Mainline loco but have two Bachmanns and would happily buy others.

Good job on this one, Bill! I have quite a few split chassis locos of different makes, and they can be a pain to fix. I have been able to 3D print gears for them. Also for the plastic middle sections of the wheels that are usually split. Often the split chassis bearing surfaces are so worn that bushings have to be fitted for the wheel axles. A project not for the faint of heart. Is it worth the effort? No. It is just my way to enjoy this hobby.
@gerardburton3741
@gerardburton3741 Жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, yes it would still have some gears, But you would be able to get rid of the 3 gears in the motor itself. As Hornby eventually took over production of this model, did they ever fit a Ringfield motor or just keep using the original one.
@dj_efk

Interesting - Do you have a link to an article / web page that has details of your bushing solution for the axle wells? I’ve recently been fixing a load of Mainline steam locos and I do think they are lovely to look at but poor quality in this area - the likes of Peter’s spares etc. are missing a trick there as that would solve a lot of the inherent flaws in the split chassis design execution.

That Mainline motor looks a proper nightmare. Was wondering if it could be swapped out with a Hornby Ringfield motor somehow. Great video as always.
@TheAntisocialTrain
@TheAntisocialTrain Жыл бұрын
One would be hard pushed to do that, those mainline motors are smaller than you think. It could be done with significant reductions in weight over the wheels (on paper it works), but I wouldn't think it'd be worth it

All of them had one gear missing including the Hornby models which is why they sold out so quick as people bought the spares just to put the missing gear back.

Bill, love the videos. Can you maybe take a step back and think about the goods shed? To me, it kind of overwhelms the centre of the layout, and looks a bit out of scale the the rest of the buildings. I know it isn't, it just looks a bit off to me.

Nice one Bill! I have 1 loco with that type of motor and it was a nightmare to dismantle, so much so that I haven't rebuild the loco/tender and now run it as a pilot engine. Having seen your demonstration I might have another try with it. I find all these 'older' engines are a challenge, but sometimes easy fixed and they do, often, run beautifully and look more authentic than the Hornby of a similar age. Have you done a strip of an early Hornby M7 (4-4-0)? I am trying to sort one out bought for me about 45 years ago. It always seems to be shorting out.
