I don't know why vut the Dapol Type 7 motor powered locos are often very noisey runners. I thought it was because the gear box combines brass with nylon/plastic. My lovely little Southern Terrier was just the same. However your Balmoral had the same brass and plastic mix and it is a lovely runner. Perhaps it has something to do with it being a right-angle transmission. Your Balmoral is lovely. It is always a risk with buting a second hand model that it might be a lemon, so when you get a really good one it's a happy feeling. 🙂
@TheSado142 күн бұрын
I think you might have a good point with the angle of the transmission as I suspect an angled motor/worm would tend to rub on one side of the gear teeth, which then causes vibration, witness the old Triang, Hornby at 45 Degrees. Then consider the split chassis Bachmann which is 90 dg the difference is astonishing. More by accident than design I fitted a plastic gear from China to a Mainline pancake motor because the original brass gear was slipping and eventually fell off. The result was a bit quieter even before a little bit of lubrication and I just wonder if the motor was position lower in the chassis, and the big centre gear wheel was smaller and held in place centrally and not allowed to move sideway the noise level would reduce even more. Great video as always Bill.

That new Peppercorn Pacific looks (as my 92 year-old neighbours says) "choice"! I'm hoping Bachmann will release a new version of Blue Peter A2 in the blue livery in which it's returned to the mainline. Trouble is, they'll probably want £300 for it. I have a soft spot for J94s. Lovely little locos. Did you know the much-maligned blue/yellow livered NCB version was actually a reproduction of a loco that worked in the Fife coalfield?
@charlie18727 күн бұрын
I do hope your ailment is resolved soon. The Balmoral looks terrific and that is disappointing about the J94. I got into the habit of taking a 9volt battery along when I attend shows or last gif it to be demoed on a test track. My daughter got married at the weekend and we have 6 family members here for the occasion. I ordered a few bits and pieces including the card for the Pendolino and a few other bits. I had them delivered to Glasgow and my family brought them over. This will enable me to do another couple of videos. Glad to see the J84 running. Any theory why some locus work better in one direction than the other? Cheers

The Hornby J94 is an ex Dapol model. I've had both in the past & both were noisey runners. The EFE model seems to run quieter. Rails had some on offer of £69 new.

That J94 is an old Dapol model which has been adopted by Hornby. At least it’s not the DJH Models J94 which is a complete car crash.

Hi. There's a great view at about 17:30. The long view from above the track with the viaduct in the distance looks really believable. It's a great angle to film from. Cheers, Kev.

@hughoconnor91727 күн бұрын
You have managed to get prime examples of what is on offer at shows - a nearly perfect runner and one that differs from tbe description! Many dealers do not have any facilities to see a loco in action and some that do only have a rolling road which may not truly indicate track performance! It's also interesting the prices quoted for some secondhand models at higher prices than new ones. You just need to be careful and if something looks too good to be true - it normally is.
@Nick-vr2pf7 күн бұрын
Bachmann's Peppercorn A1s & A2s suffered faulty motors upon release initially so as to have them recalled entirely and replaced the motors with Mashimas. I have an A1 from that period which has the same motor as your A2. Would also recommend playing with the front driver and rear pony spring tension and drawbar height as sometimes these models don't sit squarely and the traction suffers. Otherwise beautiful locos for their time! Glad you're feeling better Bill.
@peterfinch50778 күн бұрын
J94s from Hornby and Dapol were generally noisy so yours is not unusual. Its a lovely model geared for so slow speed work. Good to hear you are feeling better

Pity missed you at Perth as I was there too . A little bit disappointed this year . Have seen Burntisland, Blair Atholl , Mostyn , Dalziel North and Gresty Bridge a good few times now . Craster was really the only stand out for me . Normally Perth attracts different layouts , I’ve never seen before . I buy occasionally now . To me the prices , even for second hand , have got out of control . So my purchase were 4 stock boxes and a copy of the West Highland news !

Those Bachmann A1/A2 locos are really good. Not the best at hauling long trains if you have grades on your layout but they are really good looking models. EFE make a nice model of the J94 and whether it's better than the Hornby offering that's up for you to decide.

Noisy trains eh Bill? Don’t ever build a Hornby Dublo 3-rail layout then. Tinplate rolling stock and die-cast locomotives on tinplate track would drive you nuts😂😂. I’m half deaf anyway according to the missus. (I call it "selective listening", though it’s probably due to excessive hard rock exposure in the 80’s-90’s…). But even I find my 3-rail loft layout noisy.

I have a J94 'Cadley Hill' and it runs really quiet. I wonder if the motor needs replacing Bill?
@oobill7 күн бұрын
Some Type 7 motors are quieter than others so it would be worth swapping it out. But it's probably the gears. I'd like to swap the brass worm with a plastic one but the brass one has a much larger diameter. Fitting a plastic worm would need bodging a new mount.
@ollychap19857 күн бұрын
With your j94 run it in for a good few hours in both directions with a heavy train that should make it a little quieter

Sadly one thing that Bachmann changed (well on their New tooled V2 2-6-2) was to make the rear 'pony' truck just as stupid as the Hornby one, so that the new model has the flangeless wheels.
@oobill7 күн бұрын
Actually having fiddled with getting it on the track I can see why. You can't really see the wheels anyway so they may as well be flangeless.
