I live near New Haven Connecticut (aka center of the pizza universe) and am therefore a big pizza snob. Got the Karu 12 on sale over the summer and have not been to a restaurant for pizza since. I use charcoal in the firebox and then add a piece or 2 of wood about 5 minutes before starting a pizza. This makes a better tasting pizza to my palate relative to all wood or gas or pellet options, and the reference standard New Haven pizzas (apizza) are of course made in wood or coal ovens. Never had a problem being limited to a 12 inch pie, each pizza only takes 1-2 minutes of cooking, so once the oven is up to heat I can churn out pizzas for any number of people. Most people have trouble handling dough for a pizza larger than 12 inches anyway (need to stretch it thin!) I try to cook with the stone at 800-900 F.

I own the Ooni Koda 16 and use it twice a week every week. Haven't tried any other models but must say it's just so reliable, consistent, easy to use, enough size to play with the placing of the pizza on the stone and take advantages of varying temperatures in different zones. I definitely want to try the hybrid Karu sometime but can't recommend the Koda 16 enough. It's fantastic and I've developed a genuine bond with it. Thanks for a great video. Cheers!

Fyra, as a starter is great, but I think everyone is waiting for the Karu 16. It will be a game changer. Personally I would always recommend dual fuel. Cos whichever way you go. You’re going to want to ‘try’ the other method at sometime.

I really enjoyed using the Fyra, but i agree with you, for me Duel Fuel is the best option. I have the Karu 16 on order, so should have a video out soon!

a nice video on the various ovens Ooni have.showing them side by side certainly helps with understanding the actual sizes rather than just a dimension sheet. Looking forward to future videos possibly on the Karu 16 which is something Im thinking of buying. Any info on the Ooni Pro would also be helpful if you have any experience with it.

Tom - Thank you for posting this video. I am conducting on-line research to try and make an informed decision on which Ooni Pizza Oven to purchase. Dealing with wood, based on my experience with smokers, has a fairly steep learning curve. I know that gas is the most convenient and wish I could taste pizza made from the different pizza ovens prior to purchase.

If your starting out, Gas would definitely be the easy route. However if you're familiar with smokers, and understand fire management you'll have no issues with these ovens. If in doubt go for the karu with gas attachment, then you have the best of both worlds!

I just bought the fyra and used it for the first time for Father’s Day. No learning curve regarding the wood pellets at all. Easiest thing ever, just buy a fire starter. It’s hard to get it lit but easy to keep it lit. Pizza turned out great.

Just got a Koda 12, will fire it up on Firday. I have a friend who swears by his Roccbox. Will see if it worth the extra cash soon. Great Vid keep it up.

I know I do mainly Ooni videos, but the roccbox is a really good bit of kit. Which ever you go for ooni or roccbox, both are capable of cooking great pizzas. And I’m sure you wouldn’t be disappointed with either!

Thank you for the overview of the different models. Do you find the 12 inch model to be big enough to fit a decent size pizza for one person? Have great weekend, looking forward to the review of the new 16 inch model 😀

I own the Karu 12 and I make 10”-11” pizzas and in our experience, that’s perfect for 1 person.

I can usually make a 11-12" pizza and split between my kids 1/2. It's enough to split with my husband. Kids always have left over. Nothing goes to waste

Thanks Tomajoh, I too cannot wait for my Karu 16 to arrive! I think 12 inch is plenty big enough for pizzas for a family of 4/6. I would only recommend the bigger ones for parties or entertaining really.

I made pizzas in the fyra all day Father’s Day. Everyone loved it but everyone had to take the rest of their pizza to go. No one was able to eat an entire pizza. Plenty for one person.

Do you taste a difference going from the Karu to the fyra? Pellets are easier but if the taste really is superior using wood/charcoal I don’t mind dealing with it. I know for bbq it does for sure does but not sure if the same goes for pizza?

There is a subtle taste difference but not that much really, i guess it depends on the type of wood you cook with, for example mesquite or oak tends to have a very smokey flavour to it. The food is in for a very short time compared to bbq so the flavour isn't as much affected.

Hi Tom , first of all thank you for the great video's. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems the fyra gets a change in color of the materials after using it a while? Does the karu have this "problem"' too? The koda seems to stay the best ?

Thanks JVR! Im happy you like my videos! Due to the high temps in these ovens they will all discolour somewhat over time. The metal turns blue, where it gets really hot and then a brown colour after a few uses. It will also weather if left outdoors. Since the soda uses just gas, this is the cleanest form of heat, so doesn't tend to create as much discolouration on the ovens.

Tom what's your thoughts on the Char Outdoors pizza oven. I'm going to purchase a pizza oven but unsure which one.

Hi Stuart! Thanks for the comment! Sadly I’ve not had chance to try out a Char Outdoors pizza oven yet. This year I’d like to branch out and test some pizza ovens out from other brands!

Will a 14" wide peel fit into the Karu 12 ?

Hi Thanks for the comment! This was actually really close so i had to get the Karu12 out and the 14" peel and test it. The answer is technically yes, the 14" peel will fit into the Karu12, the problem is that its such a tight fit, that you would really struggle launching a pizza from it. So i definitely wound recommend using it, stick to the 12" peel.

@@TomVoyageuk Hi Tom, thanks. I asked the question as my Karu 12 hadn't arrived and the peel I wanted to order was being sold as a 12" but on the dimensions shown it said 14" . I took the gamble and it arrived and was 12" lol.

Ah ok! I think they’re sold as the size of pizza it will carry rather than the dimensions. Either way I find it quite hard to stretch out dough that big! 😆

There's no way you're going to get any smokiness in the 2 minutes it takes to cook a pizza

You can definitely tell the difference in taste, even in a short time.

@@TomVoyageuk that's not how smoking works though, it's a long process for a reason. Even in your test you knew which was which ahead of time and the wood fired one had a more charred crust so it would be expected to have a more charred taste

Hi Brandon, thanks for the reply. I have done a lot of smoking before on my kamado, and find that with meat, it’s takes ages to take on smoke flavour. But with dough your not cooking it with the smoke. The cool comes from the shear heat in the stone, and the flavour is intensified as the dough is so close to the smouldering wood.
