OK, you've got me again. I sold my OP-1 a few months ago because the Tape-Record-Method wasn't mine and I stopped loving it. Now I saw a few videos on the OP-Z (Hello, Cuckoo & Magpie) and I instantly fell in love. I ordered the OP-Z yesterday and it seems to me that this time the love will last. Keep up the good work. :)

Guys, I get it. I'm an Android guy too but don't make the mistake to think that this device is useless without an iOS device. It's standalone features are 99% of the whole thing and its THE BOMB (from what I've seen). So yes. TE please give us an Android app, but also be fair to TE as in this is not made for Apple users per se.

One step forwards, two steps back. The best part of the OP-1 for me is using it on trips and on public transport. It sits perfectly on my lap, with a very nice integrated screen showing me what is happening. The aluminum keys feel great too, like a mechanical keyboard. Now, I have to balance a secondary screen (Apple only) or rely on remembering what all the LED combos mean unless I want to get lost in menu diving, and what are these buttons? Little plastic clickers? Disks for knobs? Idk, it looks like it does a lot of cool stuff, total powerhouse and all, but the design just feels archaic compared to the OP-1. I hope it's what other people want, but it's definitely not for me.

This looks like a nice upgrade to the Pocket Operator line of products - a standalone tool for making short or improvisational music in a specific range of styles. It's more flexible though, capable of a wider range of sounds and more complex sequences. Probably not very useful as part of a larger studio though. It seems designed to play alone, and has some pretty hard limits. So probably best for musicians who are starting out or want a very minimalist style. It's in an odd niche somewhere above music toys but not really up to the level of professional instruments. So... If people view it as a Super Pocket Operator, they'll love it. But if compared to a DAW or a mod tracker or a Digitakt+Digitone or a table of synths, people will find it falls short. Depends on expectations.

I get a lot of mileage out of my OP-1. It's kind of a jack of all trades, master of none. Since it does a bit of everything, it's versatile and useful for filling gaps. And it's particularly useful as a sketch pad. I tend to draft songs there before making the full version, like sketching an image on paper before painting it on canvas. Would be really handy to have eight 12-minute tracks though, instead of four 6-minute tracks. And no electrical noise when plugged into USB. Those are the two main limitations I run into with it.

I have a great Idea @teenageengineering: make an upscaled version of OP-Z that's about a size of Yamaha's Seqtrack. I love my OP-Z but I'd really like bigger buttons and sturdier body with bigger battery. You don't even need to make any changes in the software - just make OP-Z bigger in size, it will help to play it easily and even redo buttons - make them computer-clicky. The price will stay the same and people will order new OP-Zs like crazy, including me!

It looks fantastic and it is something I'd happily have alongside my OP-1 but the deal breaker is the insistence of only using iOS / MACOS devices as the screen. I can't think of a single sensible reason that it is so restricted and as I will never own an Apple device, it looks like I'll be ignoring this otherwise brilliant instrument. Seeing as this is mainly a GUI you've provided, please implement an Android compatible screen mode and I'll almost throw my money at you!

Maybe, but at least some assurance that the software would ever be written and subsequently made available would be nice. When 5 out of every 6 mobile phone owners have an Android device, this is a glaring oversight and a massive chunk of the market currently ignored. I also get that you can't cater for every Android device but aiming for the top handsets would be a start.

So much unnecessary flak for only supporting iOS. TE can build for whoever the hell they want. Android (great os) has intrinsic issues with audio latency due to the virtual nature of the operating system. That's why most serious mobile production suites only target iOS. Kindly stop and think before making a mess of the comments. Brilliant addition to the TE line by the way.
@redcaoimh3127
@redcaoimh3127 5 жыл бұрын
@Louis Smith it's not unnecessary flak. Nobody is saying they can't build for who they like. Everyone here loves what TE does and like myself have probably been waiting for ages to get a hold of their new bit of kit...only to be disappointed it's compatible with apple products only. Born of frustration nothing else. Please check today's headlines about students being forced to work in apple factories in China. Also, surely you've heard of the suicide nets around their other factories. Yes they can build for who they want, but to alienate over 50% of a potential customer base is pretty strange from a business point of view. I, like others, want it, but we can't have it.

@louissmit2220 5 жыл бұрын
@@redcaoimh3127 That's an interesting point you make. And I won't make any statements on the China thing as I am not knowledgeable on that and I won't be able to make a useful contribution. Just quickly googling it, however, I saw a statement from Apple spokeswoman Wei Gu: “We are urgently investigating the report that student interns added in September are working overtime and night shifts.” The supplier and had also been audited three times between March and June without finding student interns so I do not see how this could possibly be Apples fault. Again, not knowledgeable so won't say more.

@@redcaoimh3127 Additionally (and I am in no way very deep in the music industry but I do build mobile applications) and I have noticed an extreme correlation between people in creative pursuits such as music production and owning of Apple products. I find it strange that even 10% of their "customer base" use anything but iOS and macOS. Finally, if I were to build a production studio I would not even consider Android due to the technical challenges of building audio enabled applications for the platform, which are non-existent on iOS. Not a fanboy, I use and build for both. But it seems very reasonable that if you are going to build something like TE has you're only going to focus on iOS as the cost-benefit ration is much lower. If you are serious about producing music (which you arguably have to be to spend hundreds of dollars for a synth/sequencer) on a mobile OS you most likely have already invested in one of Apple's products. There are hardly any serious producing efforts on Android. But hey, I hope TE proves me wrong and engineers something brilliant for Android. I just wouldn't want to be on that engineering team :)

@@louissmit2220 suppose it comes down to trust with that story. Do you trust a PR employee of a TNC who's job is to protect the brand, an auditor of a TNC which like many auditors are too close to the business they're meant to regulate or do you trust an NGO who has discovered these practices in one of Apples suppliers, albeit a new supplier? I trust the NGO. TNCs and MNCs are very good at creating plausible deniablity (oh and tax evasion) on workers rights and pay by the way they structure their businesses so it never comes back to their door but to the suppliers, even tho its ultimately them that make the vast profits from the brand because of such practices.

hello david, thank you very much for your comment. if you are into deep sequencing and portable music making in general, then we believe you are truly missing out, if dismissing OP-Z without having had a personal hands-on experience with it. if you've had a chance to test it and realised that it is not for you, then so be it, everyone has different needs and wants. the 'is this a toy?' argument has been applied by a lot of people on our products, since day one. this is ok and we will continue to push boundaries and challenge conventions. toy or not is irrelevant, as long as an instrument, or any object, offers enough value. maybe some day drop by one of our free music making workshops, and we can show you everything the OP-Z is capable of. then you can easily judge if it offers enough value in your life to motivate an investment. thanks for taking the time to read this. take care and have a good one!

After seeing people talk about their devices on the internet for the last few years I'm pretty sure TE's target market is people who don't know what they're doing and don't realize their products don't do anything you couldn't do more easily on your computer, and people who just like to hop trends and spend money. Never once seen any person make a case for why you would actually need any product they make. OP-1 was %100 a fad product with no utility for anyone who already has a DAW.
