It's the rematch you've been waiting for. The OP-Z is back to challenge the champion OP-1. The OP-Z received a series of firmware updates changing it's dynamics and making it more competitive. These two portable synths can sequence and now sample. But does the OP-Z have what it takes to overthrow the reigning champ? Find out in Beat Fighter 2!

The rules of Beat Fighter are simple. Each device's features are compared like for like, one feature per round. And a point is awarded for each round and feature. There are 12 rounds of features compared. The device with the most points at the end of 12 rounds wins!
The rounds are:

I’m glad you revisited this fight. I agree the OPZ packs a mean punch and considering it’s price is literally half of it’s older sibling the OPZ is a great machine

The OP-Z may have gotten more points, but the weight of those points differ from user to user. I walked away from this video still firmly in the OP-1 camp because it’s wins are so important to me!

I had an OP-Z, it was awful, so cheap input output connexion. This was the reason why I sold it. I bought it just because it was cheaper than the OP-1, now I know I'm gonna buy op1.

Yall need to learn how top lay with limitations. Real musicians can do music with whatever they got. I learned this using the gameboy to produce. It oinly has 4 channels and its just 2 measley pulse waves, a wave/sample channel, and a noise channel. But my god having so little gets you thinking real BIG. So enjoy that OP-Z, treat it as its own thing and impress people with what you can do with so little.

are we expecting some sort of change to the OP-1 now that it's been out for so long? asking for a friend who's wondering weather to buy or wait in 2020 ..

Hey, thanks for your comment. I don’t know of any major update coming for the OP1. TE does continue to release firmware updates for it. However, its rare to see a major update and the device has changed very little since its debut. It’s core features remain the same. If you like those features, then its still a great device in 2020. I hope that helps.

TRRS to 2xTRS adapters are like 5$ on eBay. I have three because apparrently Android and iPhone still map TRRS differently and it took me a while to find the correct one to record PO-20 output into iPhone for quick Instagram shitposting

The resale price has been slowly going up on the opz I have noticed, I think since the have ironed out the floating encoders and double trig's, plus sampling, rumble, and the new lfo it is really starting to come together. I don't think really cheap used ones will be a thing for much longer.. I absolutely adore it!!

I’ve seen op-1’s with broken off encoders and one or more of the keys breaking the plastic cover clips. This, to me, makes the op-z more durable. But the overall sturdiness of the op-1 is impressive

My OP-Z encoders have popped off and the unit is bent. In my experience, the OP-Z is by no means durable.

I kinda want both! OP-Z is more affordable but I'm very hesitant to buy the OP-Z, it seems so flimsy and most peoples OP-Zs seems to develop problems after 2 years or so while most peoples OP-1s seems to last. I'll ponder it some more and play with my pocket operators and acoustic instruments in the mean while.

Yeah, they are very different devices. The OP1 is very solid, but the workflow is the opposite of the OPz. Don’t rush, enjoy what you have!

I think the OP-Z can accept line level audio since a couple updates ago.

I think they could have rounded the edges on the OPZ... buuut the OPZ is actually sneaky inspiring... its weird because I find myself taking it on walks and making beats. As an instrument, Op1 still for the win though.

I guess the reason they made the OP-Z out of CHEAP PLASTIC, they were trying to avoid cannibalising OP-1's sales. But why did they cheap out so much, that half the OP-Z's for sale secondhand are bent like a banana. Having to connect an iPhone to get a screen just is'nt practical at all!

My green encoder started popping out while watching this video... fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff!!!! No chance of a refund or repair after a year. It is a really enjoyable thing but the build quality is atrocious for the price point... and I would have said this before experiencing the seemingly inevitable encoder popout issue.

Ollie Loops I’ll certainly enquire. I still I’ve their work of course. Things do break, this seems to be fixable. Remember how many faults we put up with on vintage gear.

I thought I’d use my phone with it more often, but after three days, you just Remember what everything does. So no need for your phone.
