Loved the thorough review. Been using sampling for awhile and still got some great tips and reminders. The test tone engaged by hitting track while in sample mode is not at all a gimmick however. When on the white keys all play the sample at the "set" pitch which if you listen to and tune to 440 makes it so that when you hit an A on the keyboard after leaving sample mode its sounding a true A 440khz, that way you can play well with friends. Try it with things that aren't necessarily tonal and use your ear for fun.

I have an adapter that will split the TRSS into separate mic and earphone jacks. I want to sample directly into the device from a synth output. Will a line level output work? I'm worried about damaging the op-z with line level voltage - should I stick with a headphone out from the synth?
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 3 жыл бұрын
Officially, the OPZ can’t accept line level. Even the headphone output is closer to line level than mic level. You run the risk of damaging it if you run those signals into the device. A work around would be to get a USB interface, run a line level signal into it, then sample the signal via USB on the interface. Hope that helps.

Hi, on the OP1 it's possible to sample any source without having to press the record button. You simply need to press "shift + a keyboard key" (while in synth or drum sampler) and it will go in standby mode, waiting for an input sound. I'm not sure about the OPZ as I don't own one, but give it a try :) . About your copy and paste problem, if I understood correctly what you meant, it should be just like as on the PO33: pressing and holding a step containing a sample will copy it to memory, pressing an empty step will paste it. Anyway, in my opinion the OPZ came out "incomplete", and it's a real shame. It's a beautiful item, but since its main purpose is sequencing (possibly other gear), the lack of i\o inserts is a pretty big deal. Selling a module is pointless, as it should have been integrated into the machine from the beginning. Plus lack of screen and \ or an android app is the cherry on top. I'm a huge TE fan, but I don't see myself buying an OPZ pretty soon, a PO33 is a better companion for the OP1 than the OPZ, specially considering the price.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, great comment. Thank you! 100% agreement! First, on the OPZ sampling copy and paste stuff, I'll give that a try. The Shift + keyboard trick didn't work on the OPZ. But good to know on the OP1. Regarding the OPZ and your comment, I think you're spot on. It was over promised and underdelivered. And that is a shame, not just for the devices potential, but for the price point and value to the end users. If it were $300, I would say, its a tremendous value. But with the little shortcomings and lack of being fully resolved, it doesn't work well for me personally.

Hello, Tried for days now, really struggling to use my Samsung S8 to output audio to the OPZ in sample mode. Been to Samsung shop, I have my audio output settings on my phone to OPZ via Samsung Smart Things, have USB configuration in Developer Settings to output Audio via USB and sound doesnt leave phone via the speaker or the headphone port when settings are like this, so audio is leaving phone via the usb c port but OPZ does not seem to think that is the default audio input, it still only listens via built in mic or earphones mic when engaged. Thoughts? Has anyone else successfully used sample mode direct from Samsung S8 into OPZ? My girlfriends Android phone, Huawei P30 works instantly, no settings changed, just the same usb c to usb c and straight away I can sample digital audio into the OPZ, I just need to do the same on my Samsung S8. Do I need a USB OTG cable? Or a seperate app that reroutes the audio leaving my phone or tells the OPZ it is slave to listen not my phone listen to audio FROM OPZ via USB (I dont know if it is doing this however). I am on latest firmware on both OPZ and phone. Help needed pls Thanks Myles

Sample from the po-33 to the Z and sampling from the mic and edit the sample into the DAW to lightly clean up the samples I’d say the possibility are many. Really miss my op1 tho , because it did everything that I wanted ended up selling it because it was the first generation and firmware was always crashing on me in the middle of projects so I sold it 😢it was the worst thing I’ve ever done equipment wise but the Z is $800 less expensive and adding a po-33 will be a good thing

Use the OPZ app and the Configurator menu to copy samples from one track to another. Keep in mind that slice points are shared across tracks. Also in drum mode if you sample a one bar loop precisely it will be chopped in 16ths and 8ths across the keys. Like the OP1 did. Useful. Because you can then fill a bar with steps and basically time stretch the old fashioned way. I wish they had threshold recording or trimming so you can have perfect slices. But I'm happy with the way it is right now. I'm hoping for an audio card module though
@OllieLoops

Line level signals are approximately one volt. Mic level signals are in the range of 0.001 volts, or 1,000 times less voltage. You can reduce the voltage of a line level signal by using an attenuator or a DI (Direct Injection) box.

I really don't care about OP-1 compability, as I don't own one and I'm not planning getting one for 1400 EUR. I think they said a sampler module is not out of the question later. The PO-33 style copy paste is feasible for sure from a tech standpoint, since it doesn't take up additional space to have the same user sample in multiple plugs across multiple instruments, we can safely assume that they are stored in a similar way, UX is a bit harder on that one though. I think the line-in functionality was supposed to be achieved via a simple TRRS splitter and some people are having success using one as a line in. Would it be different form op1 line in, if you just had to use a splitter for line in functionality? Overall, I'm really happy with this update.
@OllieLoops
@OllieLoops 5 жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for your comment. To clarify our point, it shouldn't be necessary to purchase an OP-1 (or module) to get further sampling functionality on the OP-Z, it just would have been nice because many people already own both units. After all, some people did pay almost $2000 for both units. Since both units have their strengths, using them together would make them a powerful duo, at least in theory. The TRRS input is not an easy item to resolve. After spending 4+ hours trying every method, cable, adopter and setting combination, we had little success getting anything useful from this input. We didn't try every solution available, but we did try several at our disposal. There are some technical reasons why a line level input is superior to a mic level input, which is its input gain. Microphones require more gain than line level inputs. So, although you can get a line level signal to work on a mic input, its just not as good as having a dedicated line level input because you get more headroom from a line level signal. Usually there needs to be a transistor or other component to change the signal's gain from mic to line. In principle, a splitter will still be expecting to see a mic level signal. As mentioned in the video, an iRig interface, which would convert the signal before it enters the OP-Z, theoretically is a possible solution. But as a whole, the TRRS input requires more research and testing to come up with a useable solution. And in short, if it's too complicated for most users, then maybe it wasn't implemented well.
