Fascinating, Herbert predicted this perfectly with the transition of Arrakis from the desert to a green forest through the first four Dune books.

That’s funny. At first people were concerned that the dunes would take over so they planted extra shrubs to keep them controlled. Now it’s working and they’re like “but…my dunes! They’re being taken by the forest!” Can’t humans just leave things alone!

Then come back and visit sometime! I've lived in Newport for all of my 40yrs & change, and will only live in other parts of Oregon when I eventually move. The farmland between Corvallis and Albany has been calling me for years. Or Ashland, or up in the Hood River Valley. That's one of my favorite places in the whole state

These are also the dunes that inspired Sand Master Park to make Florence home to the very first sandboard park. Florence has since been proclaimed as the 'Sandboarding Capital of the World'. Obviously, this is a very special dune area for many reasons.

So beautiful, so many classic conflicts. This is so well done, it should be a tool for teaching ecology *and* politics. Almost nothing is simple; there are lots of right-and wrong-answers. (I miss Steve & Todd's work.)

17:44 is such a Simpsons moment that I have to remind myself The Simpsons are based off of Springfield, Oregon 🤣😂 And yeah, I'm here because of Dune: part 2- Such a cool movie! I especially enjoyed the part when Timothy Chalamet's character Paul Atreides drove down the Doone on his custom kerosene ATV planting European grass and "grass," while Anya Taylor-Joy played a flame-spewing electric guitar on a four-wheeler. Spoilers within spoilers...

We did the same in New Zealand ,the forest service planting mareme grass on the dunes and planting trees loosing the natural sand dunes , I did this work as part of my work with the forest service

I’ve been using the Oregon dunes since the late 70s, I all those years I’ve rarely ever seen anyone showing up in a parking lot with the intent of walking around in the sand😅 I also know the only people upset about the noise or crowds are people not involved in the service industry’s that accommodates all the ATV activities. Some dude wearing a backpack at the dunes might spend $50/100 dollars, a family of 5 will spend $800/1000 or more.. Who’s more important to the economy 😅

Exactly the take away my husband and I had after watching this video. Talk about some serious propaganda against “noise”. Coos Bay, especially, sure has had a massive face lift thanks much in part to the revenue brought in by those “noisy machines” enjoyed on the dunes.

The economy is a important factor. However, use of the dunes by motorsports enthusiasts is not always a good thing. I ride off-road. I ride mtb. I hike. I know what a banshee is. I own a rz 350. I'm an old drag racing fan. Top fuel is loud. My beta 500 is quite. Atv riders can be a bit selfish at times. The impact per capita is relatively high. Excessive noise is a form of selfishness. If people don't like the noise? Well, this is America. They are at liberty to not like loud moto.

I don’t ride atv’s or motorcycles or dune buggies but I can see that lots of people enjoy riding them. I’m glad to see that a large part of the dunes is open for them to use. I’m also glad to see part of the dunes is closed to motor vehicles of all kinds. As for the gentleman that owns part of the dunes I don’t believe he should be allowed to own that area. It should be for all Americans to enjoy. I’m certain there are lots of people that would enjoy spending time in canoes on that little lake. Why should it be only for his enjoyment? Eminent domain should be used and compensate him for the property and then open it up for all to enjoy. No part of the Oregon coast should be in private hands.

I agree completely, except that I don’t believe private property should be seized to make public. However, the sense of entitlement from this man who inherited this piece of land is absolutely disgusting! People have every right to enjoy the surrounding property however they like, and if he has a problem with that he should absolutely pack up and go somewhere else where he won’t be “bothered”. Just like those people who buy property near the dunes (or a racetrack, dairy, ect) and then complain about the “noise”……. Which I was beyond disgusted at the comment in this video that the noise of these ATVs is “that of being up close at a rock concert”. What an absolute lie! 🤣🤦🏼‍♀️ I ride my horses just to the south of the staging areas of North Bend and it’s so quiet I forget OHVs are right there most of the time.

ATVs have every much right to enjoy the dunes as horses or people camping., there is no damage, the dunes heal after every blow of wind. They actually help keep brush and invasive grass from taking over.

That is the part they absolutely FAILED to mention: OHVs are *helping* keep the sand dunes…. DUNES! Nothing helps keep the invasive grasses at bay like paddle tires tearing it up. Oh, but “noise pollution”…. 🙄 Don’t like it? Go somewhere else! There’s over 360 miles of Oregon coastline to enjoy, and the dunes make of a tiny fraction. I also enjoy riding horses near the Oregon Dunes, and it makes me smile to hear the machines, knowing they also are having a good time. And helping our local economy BOOM!

Not a single interview with a tribal representative, or pre-European contact history of the dunes? I'd like to know how the tribes managed the dunes successfully for millennia without the introduction of 'quick fix' invasive species.

The didn’t manage the dunes. They left them alone to do whatever nature wanted. We don’t need interviews with tribal people who are more interested in their casinos and whatever handouts from the government they can get.

Both of these previous comments annoy me. The first one reaks of white people trying too hard to be "woke" by whining for "diversity" and "inclusion" to virtue signal how good they are. This country is mostly white people. There is nothing good or bad about that. Not everything or every peace of media is going to be diverse. And that's okay. And the 2nd goes too far the other way claiming natives only care about casinos. That's just stupid as well. You're both probably mostly decent people. But please stop with both of these extremes. It's not good for anybody.

You really believe the tribes "managed" the dunes? The dunes are a terrible place if your concern is to feed your family without wasting energy trying just to walk. They would have spent time closer to food sources that were abundant and easier to obtain...mostly the rivers. Siuslaw, Umpqua, Coos, Coquille, etc. Do those names come from areas of the Dunes?

Loud equipment is a problem. While the operator can wear ear protection (more observed in the breach than in the occurrence), the excessively high volume also affects those nearby. The regulations on noise should be respected. Here's what the Center for Disease Control has to say. Loud noise is particularly harmful to the inner ear (cochlea). A one-time exposure to extreme loud sound or listening to loud sounds for a long time can cause hearing loss. Loud noise can damage cells and membranes in the cochlea. Listening to loud noise for a long time can overwork hair cells in the ear, which can cause these cells to die. The hearing loss progresses as long as the exposure continues. Harmful effects might continue even after noise exposure has stopped. Damage to the inner ear or auditory neural system is general permanent.

😂 Let me guess….. you have never actually been near the recreational area of the Oregon Dunes?! Because this video was insanely full of massive exaggeration of the noise of these machines. “Equivalent of being up close to a rock concert” is nothing but a LIE. Notice how the folks were carrying on with a normal conversation as the ATV idled? I ride my horses right next to the off-roading area of the dunes and when I do hear the machines it brings a smile to my face, because we all have the right to enjoy our coast however we would like. Offended by the distant noise? Enjoy going somewhere else. This area is nothing but a tiny dot on the map of Oregon and everything she has to offer the outdoor enthusiast.

Ah, so you speak from absolutely ZERO experience. As suspected….. How many hours? Not sure, but they have been a part of my life for DECADES. I have spent most of my nearly 40 years around ATVs, UTVs, diesel trucks, tractors and drag cars. Even if I did have hearing loss, I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything. But have I sacrificed my hearing? I won’t be wasting my money on an audiologist, but I would bet not. Regardless, I don’t intend to leave this world with my body perfectly intact with no memories of heart-pounding FUN.
