Dana Lewis’ project OpenAPS came to be from a series of serendipitous events and through the discovery of the power of collaboration using open source tools and methods. The Open Artificial Pancreas System project (#OpenAPS) is an open and transparent effort to make safe and effective basic Artificial Pancreas System (APS) technology widely available to more quickly improve and save as many lives as possible and reduce the burden of Type 1 diabetes. Dana’s mindset makes us change our perception of healthcare and how anyone can help improve it. Dana wants to challenge each and everyone of our TEDx participants to not wait to make a difference in the world - “because we can’t afford to wait”. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What Dana and this community is doing is revolutionary. It has helped keep my daughter and thousands of others, alive, safe and will improve her long term health. Her endo who is at the forefront of diabetes technology has said how they are pushing the industry to where they should be and filling a desperate need. Amazing work!!!

They definitely deserve a Nobel Prize! I built the closed loop app for my daughter, and finally convinced her to use it and how to use it. Last night was a steady 120! I just know this is going to be incredible improvement to her A1C and both of us, our sleep schedule! Thank you for all you do and for spearheading this movement. Incredibly grateful.

I've had diabetes now for 31 years and just a month ago got my first CGM and my pharmacy is currently finishing prior authorization for my very first pump which will be the Omnipod dash. I was doing diabetes all wrong there is no doubt about that. I'm already a tech and gadget geek so naturally I'm jumping head first into this APS scene. I've done so much reading and leaning and software/app testing and troubleshooting and I love this so much! I'm incredibly stoked that I can now see my blood sugar data on my Fitbit sense and manage my diabetes and its data from my phone.

This gets me so excited I can hardly contain myself. What would life be like if my sleep were uninterrupted ? Auto adjustment basal and no need to commit to your basal dosage. Omg it sounds too good to be true.

The insulin pump, CGM, and all the supplies are over the top in cost. Type 1 diabetes is not a disease for the poor.

Thank you Dana. This whole movement has completely changed my entire view of T1D. I'm 18 years in, 30 years old in the UK. 3 months on libre2, which has completely rewrote everything I knew about carbs, proteins, fats, absorption rates, exercise, everything. I've been on MDI since diagnosis, currently jabbing a good 12 to 15 times a day. I've got an annual review and discussion about going onto a pump in 2 weeks time. I think I want a Dana RS ideally and maybe even Fiasp instead of Novorapid. Can't wait to see my HbA1c since getting the CGM, I feel more energetic, I'm sleeping better, I'm gaining weight. I remember the day I got diagnosed feeling like a death sentence. The idea of a pump was terrible for my little skateboarding self at the time. Now, I'm 30 with a kid and I want the freedom to run around in the park with her and have my basal adjust automatically so I'm not having to carry bags of sweets around. I totally believe in this system, I think it's just bloody awesome to be honest. xDrip+ has been amazing, hopefully I qualify for a pump and I can start on this new adventure. Wish all you T1Ds a happy and healthy life :)

Also, I had a good 250 to 300g of carbs tonight. 2 X 12 inch wood fired pizzas. I've been splitting my bolus 4u/hr, I'm 12 units into it so far and levels are perfect. Just got to sit up until maybe 4am (midnight currently) and do 3 or 4 more jabs, lucky that I've got to be up super early for work tomorrow for a massive week haha. What we do for pizza eh. Would love this system doing this for me in the background, I'm tired out. My family don't understand it at all, which is disappointing. Until you live it, you don't get it to be honest. Like so many diseases.

You cannot buy it. You gotta make it by your own. It’s called DIY- do it yourself. You can check openaps documentation or their GitHub page for all instructions.

At the 35 second mark, Lewis states that "When you are diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, you are often told a cure is five years away." If someone told you that, they do not know much. Five years? That is BS.

Yes insulin takes to long to act but if exercise involved works much faster. I don't believe in insulin pump as it doesn't work with extreme sports like motocross and mountain bike etc.
@evo5349
@evo5349 5 жыл бұрын
This is where my belief that pumps are no good as you say if a low blood sugar level is detected the pump compensates but in motocross where I burn at l1000calories in 30 min I cant just eat something as in extreme sports. Like mountain biking today 2 1/2 hrs I burned 1800 calories and my bloods where at start 10.0mmol and at the end 3.2mmol so had a carb bar to bring it ack up.

I understand your hype about the pump but my intake off carbs has never been high and I would rely on very small amounts off insulin. I live in the UK and worked in a hospital 7 years ago and the start up on the pump was very poor here as I found £105.000 off new pumps in a store room but not used as they hadn't employed specialists to give them to people and teach how to control there use. Its interesting what you said about illness and the stress it causes. When I go to the diabetic clinic my bloods always rise just from going there. Well I must go now as going out on the bike, thanks for your reply.

I love the work the openAPS people are doing. But one lousy or malevolent programmer and all the 300+ people testing the code could die in their sleep. I am not ready to give up my own responsibility yet. CGMs have helped a lot, but artificial panreas system are still too scary for me.

To answer all her questions, isn't it simply: measure your blood glucose?
@BlazerStoner420
@BlazerStoner420 4 жыл бұрын
You obviously didn’t listen. Her CGM monitors it every 5 minutes, the problem isn’t measuring but the devices not being smart enough to aide automagically - which is crucial during sleep. Some products have hit the market but it’s still rare.
