As a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, Dr. Edward Damiano knows first hand the dangers of this disease. After nearly two decades of research, he has developed the bionic pancreas which promises to change the lives of patients forever.
Every parent has a dream for his or her child. Dr. Edward Damiano’s dream for his son David is that can live a life unhindered by his type 1 diabetes diagnosis. As a Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, Dr. Damiano has worked toward this dream by developing a bionic pancreas - a technology he hopes is available for his son when he heads to college in the fall of 2017. Over the next few years, Dr. Damiano aims to conduct the final pivotal trial testing a fully integrated version of the device and to receive regulatory approval making this device broadly available.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

"We CANNOT, we MUST NOT get that phone call"... Sir, you are a true hero for all the diabetics all around the world... You have not done any less than what Fredrick Banting did so many years ago... I take my hat off for you and raise my glass high for your project... I have been a diabetic for the past 15 years and every moment in my life is filled with worries about my BG level... Watching this video brought tears to my eyes... This is the first time I have some hope for an easier and less stressful life.... I will begin raising awareness about bionic pancreas as much as I can... People like you must not stand alone to invent such life-changing technologies... You need to be financially and technically supported by governments from all arund the world... God bless you Edward Damiano... You are a true hero....

I've been type 1 for 40 years, pumping for 16. Dr. Damiano is spot on talking about how pumpers work hard to get their numbers, erratic as they may be. So many people think you just plug in and forget about it. Not even close! It is a 24/7 job.

It is clear that Ed Damiano has created a tremendously important managing device for those with Type I diabetes, and to do it largely on his own, not only for his son but for many, many others is inspiring to say the least.

Wow, this would change my life. I have been type 1 for 28 years and have spent many years trying to control my sugar through shots (5 a day for many years) and the last 15 or so with a pump. This would be life changing for many diabetics and parents of children with diabetes. I only hope that it is affordable to those of us who need it.

This has truly changed my 3 daughters with type 1 diabetes lives... It allowed my daughter to have a baby, her and the baby (Baby Alex) both survived!! Without it baby Alex wouldn’t of survived and my daughter would most likely not of survived either.

Great work, excellent explanation, don't forget the present financial cost of managing is beyond many who need it. You and many are changing those limited systems as we wait for cure. I do not live for a cure, I live for the ability to finance what I need for good self management. I have 50 years of T1D and I work full time, and still can't vacation or travel because of the financials needed to be Well with diabetes, and I am! Tx.

The work that Ed Damiano and his group have done is incredible and I for one can not wait to take this technology for a spin! T1D for more than 18 years and in tight control through now almost 3 healthy pregnancies... and to be quite honest... only steps away from what we call diabetes burnout on more than a few occasions. This would be freedom for those of us with T1D, and would mean a return to our real selves for us and all those around us. Anxiously and patiently awaiting my first iLet.... and thankful for this genius group of dedicated parents and experts.

This creation sounds amazing and I’m sure will be very deeply appreciated by us who have T1D. I remember hearing in another video that this machine’s range will be 140. This blood glucose is high as according to the Dr.Bernstein who is a long time survivor of type 1 diabetes. He used to have the recommendation from the ADA and Endochronolgist’s standards on blood glucose, but complications that he was developing were continuing to develop until he found out how to achieve normal blood sugars (83 to around 95).He was able to reverse his complications after learning how to maintain normal glucose. He has information provided on KZfaq and in his book called Dr. Bernstein’s Diabetes Solution...

I agree it changed my life, I noticed bad health after I stop exercising and my HbA1c rose to 7.8. Followed his advice and guidelines and now I am at 5.1 a high non diabetic range. I can't believe how nobody ever talks about him in the diabetic community.

@@jdtown6585 Yes I believe they're paranoid about getting low blood sugars. Dr.Bernstein mentioned from his experience he barely got low blood sugars with such a small amount of insulin going in it would be impossible AND it would be more likely to crash low blood sugars with the varying instability of using regular insulin for carbs.

The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that you need to have a (average sized) device attached to the outside of your body, 24x7. That's why I pray for the Biohub to become a reality. I also would be nice if this bionic pancreas can be shrinked to something much smaller, and maybe even put inside the body.

Samia Saffer never :-( our NHS is funded by governments who care about 4 years at a time ... They don't care about reducing complications that'll happen in 10 or 20 years time. Our PM says she has T1D - if she really had it she would be fighting for this stuff - T2 on insulin isn't the same thing but now our government thinks we're all fine because the PM manages lol ... Maybe we need to get organized to protest against the appalling state of help available on the NHS?! :-( :-( :-( sorry for the rant - I know I'm preaching to the converted! xox

I cannot wait until the iLet comes out and that time is drawing near for its release. Every time they talk about diabetes on any show, commercial, or news on TV they "always" talk about type 2 diabetics...forgetting that we, type 1 diabetics are here....we exist. So I thank you for this innovation. Sine I was diagnosed 25 yrs ago, when doctors would blame me because my A1c's weren't perfect, I would have to remind them that I am human, not a pancreas. I cannot do what a pancreas does....it is impossible and you saw that. I saw on your website that the insulin only iLet should be out by mid-2020 and the dual-chamber iLet should (hopefully) be out by mid-2021 to 2022. I am on the edge of my seat. It would be nice to feel like a non-diabetic like I used to be until I was the hospital one night, shocked, 25 yrs ago...

This is really exciting news for Type 1 diabetics! My 30-year-old niece was in a trial for this and said it was the best she has felt since she was diagnosed 23 years ago. She was so impressed she set up a gofundme account (www.gofundme.com/iLetBionicPancreas) for Boston University where the bionic pancreas is being developed. More money for research will bring this amazing device to market sooner. Please donate if you can and help get the word out.

Dear Edward, when God gave you the power to procreate he also gave you that power to protect your offspring. What you have shown us, is what we see when a father sees a lorry about to hit his son. He has this outflow of cortisol and adrenaline to stop a lorry. We are proud of your work. Now I see light at the end of the tunnel. Keep it up, don't give up. You are going to get a cure for all diabetic children. Just scratch your head more. Lucy

It is a tough job and it takes a lot of work. I know how frustrating it is. When all else fails, live a boring life for 10 -14 days and eat the same thing(s) at the same time. It will be really challenging, but if food and activity is kept the same it might be possible to find out what works for you. I'm no doctor, but it's something one of my doctors told me about. Doing this, and jotting down what you eat and when you eat it, might help a pattern be seen that you could show your health care provider and get better results. I would recommend avoiding high-carb meals, careful carb counting and avoidance of all alcoholic beverage consumption. You may have done all this already, but if not, it might be worth trying. Also, I'm not assuming that you do drink, just, in case you do drink, to avoid it during the testing period. Whatever you do, I wish you the success in managing T1D. It's a rough path. Hang on tight and stay the course.

"she can eat whatever she wants...." Not the best way to stay healthy, but also not with the available Insulin. All in all I think this is great. But we must not forget that with or without diabetes, the ultimate goal is to be aware of our body, stay healthy by making good choices with the right food, and lets not forget, to stay active and exercise. I don't want to see in 10 years time, once the Bionic Pancreas is available to us, people continuously growing and living with other medical conditions due to bad nutrition and making poor choices because they think they have the freedom to do with their junk food whatever they want.
