Thank you, Gordy! If a drummer can watch all these videos, and take away one or two things, you’ve made a difference. For me, relaxing, the forefinger of my grip, and focusing on the back fingers using the magic markers are the two things that made a difference for me. By the way, I love your headphones… I use them every day.

Nice videos Gordy! I will have to try this playing quietly. It's much easier to play louder and real open, but I will look into playing the sticks closer to the drum using gravity. I have to learn how to play quietly for most of my gigs.

Great, I am practicing this regularly. Question: Can I use it to play quietly? When I take this from the pad to the snare... I find that I need to play too loud to get a proper rebound. If anyone has experience with this, I am curious.

David, Keep the sticks close to the drum, then just let go and catch. Use gravity as the downward force, not your downward pressure.

Good advice, I want to add that head tension affects rebound so try tightening the top head.

Dear Gordy, thanks a lot for all the knowledge and whisdom you're sharing. I would like to ask you about playing shuffle with open close technique. Does the right hand hits the quarter note in open or close position when playing the first and last eight note of the triplet? It is open CLOSE, or OPEN space close?... And when you are playing the swing beat on the cymbal with the right hand, how do you shuffle the left hand when playing the first and last eight note of the triplet ? Is the accent played in open or close position?... Thanks

Thanks! Shuffle is open CLOSE, close on the beat. You can use this move on the jazz ride rhythm too at slow to med. slow tempos - beat two would be a downstroke then open/close. As it speeds up it becomes a three note stroke - open , bounce, close.

Gordy would you say push pull doubles can replace all the doubles in my playing? I have watched all of your youtube videos and the only question in mind is if these doubles can be played as fast ghost notes? You are awesome by the way

Thanks. I would say learn how to do them, add it to your skill set. Once you can do them, stop thinking about it. Your hands will automatically decide what technique they want/need to use in the moment so you won't have to.

They are custom made for me by Innovative Percussion. They make great sticks. Unfortunately they are not available to the public. If they get enough requests for them this might change.

A wrist injury 45 years ago made me a permanent match grip player. Check out Raul Valdes Part 2 at my youtube channel. He does it w/ trad grip LH about half way thru, in the "Back Beat Application" section of the video.

hey gordy...how much does the size of the drum stick itself come into play....the thickness?...is there a way to tell if the stick i'm using is to thin or to thick for me?...i always hear, how does it feel, is it comfortable....but is there a proper , technical way to tell if i am using a correct thickness stick....thanks

Heavier sticks can help you feel the rebound better, more mass = more inertia. Thickness is more about what you are used to and the music you are playing. I prefer thicker sticks. For me they are easier to hold on to.

open/close obviously more versatile compared to Moeller. The Moeller also very hard to master.

Both are equally valid but used for different purposes. They can also be used in combination. Check out Part 4 of my Drum Technique Fundamentals series at my youtube channel and you'll see how.
