Gordy, You are such a gift to the drumming world. Thank you so much for sharing !!! Just Brilliant.... and then some. It seems like anyone that leaves a thumbs down should have to explain why... and then we can tar and feather them in the town square. Thanks So Much !!!!

I wasted many hours watching videos teaching me hand & stick control the wrong way, and there are tons of them. In fact, this involves the majority of them. You are the best teacher I’ve seen hands down. I subscribed to your channel and now will have to stick to it. Thanks a whole bunch!

He's playing in perfect timing while speaking. It's hilarious. He's pointing out what should be obvious to us all but isn't.

very cool! i always threw sanford doubles from my high school marching line around the kit, very similar idea at work here. down the toms, up the toms, from snare to tom, from tom to snare, through all the permutations with bass drum filling in the spaces

You are true inspiration sir, keep it up! After playing many years and still be really weak with my left hand and know your video open-close technique I decided to start studying and hook up with this technique from now on. I'm Bulgarian, so I've got hard time sometimes understanding you, but hopefully will get it eventually. :) Cheers for you, best wishes!

I agree, your videos and work are amazing! I have learned a lot from them. I used to work with older videos of yours that seem to have gone away. (The ones with the flames) If there is a way to access those as well, please let me know. I miss seeing them. Thanks.

Thanks Susan, I'm glad they are helpful! All of my videos can be seen at my website: GK-Music.com, or my KZfaq channel: kzfaq.info. The older videos you are referring to are the Open/Close Technique videos.

Gordy. Bought your book and improved my technique a lot already. Can you do a video showing the proper way to set up drums. It looks like from the video better to set up the floor tom in an angle and snare flat.
@GKMusic547 жыл бұрын
I just set the toms up to the angle that works best for me... where my hand wants to play it. Don't worry if it's flat or tilted a bit. You want to able to hit it without hitting a rimshot.

What would you say is the "best" or "correct" kind of hand technique? I love the way you use the "open-close" and that's why I've been practicing over and over. Mind you, I've been teaching myself to use the core more to drum, that is to say, the movement I try to use all the time comes from the soulder blade as to make the arm more like a whip and let the stick do the hit. On that note, all of the drummers I love don't have a great textbook technique...for example, I love Neil Peart's drumming but I hate to watch him play. The way he moves his hands I just don't like it, but you can't argue against the results. It may be dumb but besides the sound I also care a lot about the aesthetics of drumming or playing an instrument in general.
@GKMusic547 жыл бұрын
The "best technique" or "correct technique" is the one that let's you play what you need to play, at the volume level you need to play it at, night after night without hurting yourself. Open/close is a soft technique, Moeller is a loud technique. So you probably won't be using much open/close on a rock gig in an arena, or a lot of big Moeller strokes on an acoustic jazz gig at a cocktail party. Aesthetics are not dumb. When movements look more natural, relaxed, and flowing they usually sound better as well. Next time you watch some youtube drum videos mute the sound, and watch it slow motion. (On newer videos the gear icon has a speed option.) Slow it down to 1/2 speed and just watch. Ask yourself does this person look centered and balanced? Do their movements look smooth, flowing, and natural? In my opinion the guys I've seen with the best technique are "naturals" - kids gifted with talent, who were exposed to many great drummers when they were very young. They learned by watching, mimicking/copying the movements and sounds they saw and heard. Two good examples are Buddy Rich and Tony Williams.

The thing that I find a bit strange: When moving the stick low between snare/Tom you hit the head not straight down, but at an angle with low power 🤔 I'm actually trying to avoid just that, it seems wrong to me... 😶

Isn’t a “U-shape” done while using both arms called a “W shape?” That’s what I see idk about everyone else but not a ridged sharp w A nice arc not the ugly PRINT I use cursive Hm the alphabet is important. Just yanking chains and poking the hornets nest 😅 great stuff
