I told you your videos would help the bee industry far better then those in the business, or meetings and what have you. Good job. Albeit accidentally.

I've got fish in an aquarium and I divide them with a needle point plastic mesh with a piece of plumbing line insulation at either end to make it float. The same concept might stop all drowning. Startup cost would higher then straw, but it would last forever and minimize drowning.

As a hobbyist I use coconut fiber at the bottom of my trays, I find it wicks up syrup nicely and provides lots of grab on handles for the girls to sup it up or climb out if bumped in. I live in the desert and dry dearths are common.

That looks like an awesome layout. I’ve been using 5 gallon buckets to feed and get a lot of waste .

Beekeepers (beginners and overly concerned) need to realize that bees shouldn't be fed just because we "think" they need it...the colonies must be inspected to figure out what they need. Late winter and very early spring is the time when the colonies need comb space to establish their brood nests. If we start mass feeding they will plug the combs full and have very limited space for rearing early brood. Here in Baltimore the colonies already have established brood nests surrounded by honey, which indicates they are doing just fine at the moment...course it's still winter!!!! Great video explanation!!!!

I study Hives with Live stream video cameras and we watched a hive suddenly fill all the comb with nectar. The queen started laying in the open nectar cells and the nurse bees were cleaning the honey off of her butt and removing the eggs she had just laid. We discovered that a new Beekeeper about 100 yards away was open feeding (" to build up the numbers"). We had to remove and replace some comb to provide brood space.

We open feed many tons of syrup. It works good if not placed too close to the hives. Save a lot of time as well.

Thanks so much. Just made me one that you suggest....LOVE IT!! i have one about 600 feet away from hives. I have 40 hives. Should I make 2 more and place one at 400 feet and another one at 200 feet? thanks!!.

really appreciate your videos..its like...why didn't i think of this..ha! Open Feeding I think is misunderstood. I always thought if you had any open feeding it would automatically cause robbing. I think different now. With that said what would be your minimum distance from hives you would place one of your tubs.

Nice video. Unfortunately, open feeding isn't allowed by law in Germany. It's sayed to be a hot spot for spreading diseases.

How big are the boards you put in the tub feeder? do you float one board almost the size of the tub and then straw around the edges? I'm having trouble picturing exactly what you described. I'll watch it again and see if that helps.

Thanks so much for your responses. They were very helpful. I'm anxious for the beekeeping year to begin. We should start seeing pollen from Maple trees here within the next few weeks. So far all four hives are looking good. I hope you are having a nice time in Winnipeg with your wife. We drove through there on vacation once on our way to Lake Winnipeg. That was around 1984 when I was 12. I'm in Southeast Missouri. Thanks again!!
