You are doing great, that's really good timing. Yesterday I was shock when I saw canola field start blooming already Southwesr of Killarney and I have a yard 2 miles away. I'm glad I drove around that area on my way back from Brandon for groceries.

Thank you for sharing Ian! In the past I've had mixed results with formic. However the last few years I've covered the top half of the pad to slow the release down using the foil packaging and have been happy with the results using one or two pads. It slows and extends the release nicely. Nevertheless, your season is tight.

Hello from Turkey Ian. Love to watch your videos. I am also a small scale beekeeper. I just want to ask; in Turkey we only move bees when it’s dark. Because when you move the hives in the middle of the day, many bees will be in flight mode. Don’t you think that you are loosing some of forager population when you move your bees in daytime? I am wishing sunny days to you😊

@ufuk172 @aCanadianBeekeepersBlog With the many hours of daylight we have you really have no choice but to just move them when you have to. A tad bit further north west of Ian so we only have about 4 hours where the yellow ball is below the horizon - more twilight than dark.

Your corn crop should recover from my experience. You may lose some stand and a few days of maturity but not worth replanting this late in the year. Sure hope the weather improves.

Bees in a field need something for orientation. Try putting a log or something near the hives. Bob binnie has a video on this. He puts his near the wood line.

Someone told me yesterday "you're crazier than Ian in Canada. He too puts a rope line in the grass so he can line up his hives." I don't care.. what's wrong with being precise. For a beek is a plus. I just brought my last yard home and your flow is not even started... what would I do now until fall if not tests and experiments. Well I could go on vacation.. but my house already has one side into the sea. Maybe I'll visit you. It's not 40c there too ? 🥵😎 it can't be drier than here

I am always a bit surprised when you are moving colonies that you don't seem to worry about the loss of the foragers that return to the hive to find it is no longer there! Maybe the sheer number of colonies you have to move in a limited time means that you cannot afford to wait until the foragers have returned.

I envy you for your farmer background. You have a handle on all the nectar producing plants and when they all will be producing, or in this case when they won't, which allows you to move around the countryside to maximize your utilization of each. My plant knowledge is very limited and I often wish I knew more about what is producing at what time of the summer. I did smell the basswood trees these last two mornings on my run, so I'm looking forward to that, if the rain will slow down.

If interrupting the brood is how Formic kill's the mites, couldn't you just take out all the open brood.

I have marked queens from 2022 (mutts) that are still performing and just made it through a MAQS treatment just fine and they have had a MAQS treatments every year (3rd time now at least). My thought is your single boxes are not giving the bees enough space to "get away" from the strongest fumes and the patties didn't help air flow either. For myself I'm usually treating this time of year and our flow is still on or about to end. I run all medium 8 frames so hive could have as many as 6 boxes on when treatment is applied - 2 strips between 2nd and 3rd box below the excluder. Heat temps will definitely kill the hive if you go above the temperature restriction for the upper level temperature. I also have screened bottom boards with inserts in so I can see what kind of mite drop I'm getting. Most mite drop happens within the first 48 hours. I run about 30 hives. I"m going to be sorry to see MAQS go (supposed to be discontinued). I think the Formic Pro formula is harder on the bees than MAQS - have used both. There is no way I'd ever be able to come up with two weeks of below 85F in our area during the summer months but I can get a window of 3-4 days below 85F for MAQS to get a treatment in. Weather and being able to fly is important too is my experience.
