The UK had this concept of open cars in 2015 when I was there.

And just north in Canada. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have had these for years.

I agree, those things ride like Cadillacs when they are working properly. I love the tan floor ones and original lighting. More seats too.

The thing that helps disabled people is the wider doors. It makes it easier for people in wheelchairs to get on and off.

It’s a tech that literally every other country uses. It helps people spread out more on trains and increases capacity

it allows passenger loads to be evenly spread throughout the train instead of everyone mostly boarding the cars in the middle

flipside - video cameras in every car. immediate halt - evacuate. even better if cops are already onboard - same access to the shooter in the situation you're complaining about.

I think people overestimate how hard it is to shoot that far on a moving train, unless you have specialized war weapons in which case it doesn't really matter if there's open gates or not. But ultimately, active shooters shouldn't happen in the first place (and thankfully NY has pretty tight gun laws so it's not as common there).
