I love seeing Australia and hearing the accents and how people dressed and communicated in the 80s. Such a beautiful, bygone era. Gone too soon!

It was great if you were white and well off. Not so much if you weren’t. It’s still the lucky country and a wonderful place, but don’t let nostalgia shield the realities of life in the 80s.

A well produced account of a place in Aussie history. The magnificent flag pole has added symbolism to me as a person who worked at the Port Kembla plant where the raw stainless steel was produced. A least five batches of around 50 tonnes went into the material for the fabrication of the pole which weighs 220 tonnes. These were produced in an Electric Arc furnace then refined in an Argon / Oxygen Degasser before being cast to ingots and rolled in a slab mill. Material was finally rolled into coils. Sadly this production was done within twelve months of the plant ceasing stainless production in 1985. After that time stainless product was imported from a few other plants around the globe. Just imagine all that product you see being imported to this day. In a way it marked another spoke lost in the wheel of Aussie manufacturing

Unexpectedly a very good production. A brilliant move to tell the story of the building through all the people associated with the building with such high standards. Hopefully a lesson for us today. Vale Mr. Giurgola.

I remember seeing this just before it was finished, in 1986 or 1987, can't remember exactly. I thought the building was beautiful with great and contrasting finishes, such as the marble entrance and wood dominated hall with the painting Blue Poles in it. I was amazed how small the Prime Ministers office was, and felt it was a weird place to put it. It was near to the entrance that in those days you could drive right up to. Years later some idiot actually drove a 4WD through the fence, fortunately noone was injured.

I wasn't aware - thank you for the update. I met Mr Giurgola in 2009 when was a guest critic on a project I was working on when I was studying Architecture at UC. He actually picked up my model and gave me feedback of some sort. I don't remember what it was exactly, but I remember it being positive. A proud moment for me.

And to think only 30 years later this building is already full and are contemplating extensions, maybe a cull of government staff is needed. The biggest criticism of this place compared to old parliament house I've heard is where the humble size of the old place enforced the public and rivals to mingle and fraternise with each other, the cavernous new facility separates and isolates various sections from each other has encouraged a sectarian vibe

Times are a changing. Sir James Killen's comments in the latter part of another documentary I watched from 1988 relate more so now, with the fence going up albeit he was never a fan of the new parliament buildings. A sad state, somewhat quashes the architects vision.

They didn’t want their beloved hill to be blown up. The hill had been a popular picnic spot for generations. Some would even say the most romantic place in the city (or the only romantic place in the city). Hills also carry a spiritual significance in many indigenous cultures, in addition to their geological and biological role.

In contrast to other parliament/government buildings around the world? It's very easy to do a Brasilia and separate the 2 houses of parliament and build a tall office tower for office space needs but the architects strove to do more than this, not only to make a building which is functional, but one which inspires and most Australians would be proud of.
