This series shows how what was once prosperous land that had gone to waste was transformed once again into fields that could be used for grazing and cropped for winter cattle feed. Work to build a bypass along the route of the closed main railway line has begun, after the coal extraction work on the mine was done. Where does the time go, it does not seen that long since I was coming here to see the work each week. This time views of phase 2 top soil being replaced. Over on phase 1 where work on the bypass is being done rapid progress was made on the deep cutting that was being dug out. Also we see how dangerous working on a live motorway could be back then with no speed limit or lane closure signs just cones and metal signs at the start of the work are. Here lane 3 is being made ready to reopen. Lastly a brief look over the new housing which was not part of the opencast area just a spare farm field that was sold off.

I did enjoy going to see the big machines. Even back then I think cable pans were old, and look at the dozer CAT with the spoked wheel, I bet that was an old one

A lovely view spoiled by heavy industrial equipment for the open cast coal plant.

A condition of doing the work was to restore the land profile to how it was before. The land was used to grow rhubarb years ago and left abandoned for years after the farm closed, If you look at the early videos of the area you will see it was all rough overgrown land, in time you will see how it is today used for cattle to graze sometimes sheep and horses, also grass is cut for winter feed.

Hark at the noise being made by all the gear!! It’s bespoiling the countryside in this area.

I admit the noise of machines was very loud as the work began removing top soil and another layer. these were made into huge mounds behind the houses and really worked well as the work progressed. Now there was noise again as the top soil was being put back over the excavation. It was not going on for long though around two weeks 7:30am to 5pm and no weekend work

To be legal, the equipment would have to be powered by batteries and solar panels!! Well that’s today rather than in the seventies!!

It wouldn’t be allowed in this day and age!! It’s just not green enough to give the green light to!!

Back then they were doing a lot of open cast saying it was cheaper than deep mining. Even small areas like this one were mined and for the amount of earth they needed to move for a small amount of coal I have never understood how they made a profit. Recently our last mine closed, a huge opencast one in Wales that provided our coal for steel works and steam trains. We now import coal from Kazakhstan at £500 a ton, I was told on my recent visit to KWVR. I am all for green but it surely cannot be any better than this for our planet. Look how dirty our steam trains smoke is now compared to a year ago. People did protest strongly about this area but overall it has made the area much nicer than it used to be.
