Now we are just assuming this is cherries because that is one of the things the guy used to grow on the farm but he also grew other stuff. Under further inspection it looked like mixed vegetables.14:34 Looks like a possible worm

A few years ago I worked for a local heating company so I spent time in basements of many older homes. I was amazed at how many people forgot they had stuff like this floating around, especially if the homeowner was elderly and hadn't been down the stairs in years. I recall one particular house where these old jars were lined up by the hundreds and each one was dated / tagged with the contents. Some were cloudy and others were quite clear so you could figure out what was inside. The key seemed to be the condition of that rubber gasket. If it was dried / cracked from many previous uses then it didn't hold up over the years. For those not familiar, the home canning process is about placing the jars in hot water, which expands the air and the contents inside. (contents to the brim for less air space) Once the jar is hot you close the wire bail to hold the gasket tight and as it cools the jar is now under a vacuum, which is what preserves the product. The food that lasts the longest is usually anything in pickle juice or anything that was cooked / heated all the way through. (kills bacteria) Anyway, this was 20 years ago and I was looking at product from the mid 30s, of which I would estimate 25% still looked like the day it was put away. The other 75% looked like a science project. Storage conditions? 150 year old basement with a rock foundation and the jars on a wooden shelf. The shelf itself was no longer level due to the wood being in direct contact with the dirt floor. Basically it was cool, dark, damp... and the jars are mouse proof.

@@Courdorygirl Yeah, that is how they seal jar's if it is done right. Get them to boiling with content's in the jar. And as they cool it create's the suction to seal the cap's or lid's down and sealing them without germ's. So getting them almost that warm when opening release's the suction, so they may be opened with ease.😅😁😋

My first thought is that this looks like canned Mincemeat to me, which would explain the different textures, different types of fruit, and the shortening type substance. If it is mincemeat, then the spices may have been the cause of what you were smelling when you got that baked bean type whiff.

The large coloured masses are just the skin cell aspects of the cherry, a lot of times you will find in fruit the most interesting textures on the organic composition of the fruit itself, pomegranate is an interesting one, just as the whole fruit is very fascinating in the way it's structure presents itself, a piece of pomegranate skin also resembles itself with hexagons and geometrical structures. It doesn't seem like to me that you have a whole lot of bacteria going on there, mainly cellular structures, but in samples you tend to get either dominantly bacteria or mould, as they counteract each other. Also please correct me if i'm wrong, I just spent time on a project at University doing some sampling of random things, so I'm not entirely sure about everything that's going on here!

An 87-year old relative passed away very recently, and I was involved in the process of cleaning up his old house. We found a jar of peaches from 1959 in the basement. Unfortunately one of my cousins dropped the jar, it broke and stank all the basement for a couple of days. It's amazing to realize people just go through the process of preparing those big jars of fruit, and then boom, they forget them for decades. There were a few other food items in boxes, like cans, sugar packs and other things that must have fed a bunch of rats and cockroaches over the decades.
