This video shows the process of opening the HGST HUS726060ALA640 helium filled hard drive. The video is made only for research purposes, using the improvised tools and methods.
Whole process of opening was done in secured area, with idea to get more information about the helium hard drives and technology itself.

@@HddSurgery Any update? Seems like purging a small environment, letting everything outgas, filling with helium to pressure, then using the helium environment to as part of the inert gas welding procedure is how manufacturers do it. You could probably get away with creating a helium environment where you could run a transplanted disk in a working chassis/board without having to reseal it. I assume you aren't trying to rebuild broken hard drives, just extracting the data.

How to recover data from a helium drive? Drill the defective one and make a backup of the backup.

I think you nee a sort of specialized can opener, the laser welded top is quite thin

Yes, some special opener may be useful, but this is not thin as it may look.

It seems as the seagate exos hard drives come with a thicker layer of metal all around the hdd. Do you think helium leaking will be a problem for long term reliability, even if the hgst mtbf is excellent?

Helium DOES leak even from sealed drives. This IS a problem. We just got recently RAID 5 ARRAYwith WD RED 20TB drives that died because of a Helium Leakage.

helium will leak, doesn't matter what kind of seal, plastic, metal, rubber, because helium atom are smaller than any other atoms (except hydrogen)

Very much so, there's probably even less chance it will be recovered. It's arguably more and more difficult to recover newer drives which have very high densities

Interesting video that I found. Ny the way guys, just bought used, almost new(70 hours of use) WD Ultrastar 14 terabytes drive, it was made in 2019. Despite it being almost new, the Helium levels are 64% :< I bought this drive to use for 20 years period as an archive, but is it already only 64% of helium left, is it bad? Could helium evaporate while drive was just not used?

I wonder if you could put the drive in a clean room type hood, fill the hood with helium to perform a data recovery. Or have you found a better solution since posting of this video?

The background music comes from The Marvel Comics movie The Avengers, which is FICTIONAL. You are implying that you have super-powers that let you fix helium hard drives. But, as we know, super-powers do not exist, so you are telling us that Helium Hard drives only get repaired in comic books. Thanks for the insight.

Should be use the cutting blade the better way than the CNC.

At that time we did not know what lies behind the lid. Opening with the cutting blade would not be easy as it may seem to be.

A fiber laser might work , repeatedly following the laser weld until breach, but helium handling would be a problem

Is that enough? You mean YT is actually smart enough to let people "get away" with the technical copyvio, because they realize that *if people KNOW what the music actually is, then they might actually BUY it*? (i.e technically known as "free advertising"..) I only wish TV advertisers knew that too, and deliberately put all the information out there on iSPOT.tv, along with links to where to buy the music if one actually wants to do so. Hmm. Trying to pry off the lid with all the cutting debris still covering the drive? Nope. I don't think one could have an expectation of clean innards unless one were to actually clean up the mess before opening the drive.

+HddSurgery - Data Recovery Tools i was thinking about putting a luggage in a baggage hold ... i mean these compartiments are not pressurised... on a long flight (higher altitude) depressurised gaz could become a problem... (i wouldnt take the risk)

BERSERKERDEMON1 We believe that flight cannot damage the drive, nor the environment, but you should ask someone from the airline company, just to be sure.

"desoldering" meant as melting the thin steel-aluminium laservelding ) Screws out - melt and lift lid off with suction.

+Jens Tingleff it just doesn't work like that cutting is the best method, they just need to not do it in an abbrasive fashion, but rather chipping or pressing instead

@@HddSurgery What is thickness of welded foil? I mean why just not cut it X-shape in center by scalpel or knife, and after that - simply tear it off sides ? No small metal dust, no waiting. Or main drive cover is also welded on sides ?

After open the seals Helium will leak out. You cannot recover it.

I can assure you this drive is dead because when you open an HDD it's all over you can't fix it no matter how hard you try even if the Drive is healthy and functional

Hi, we think that all data recovery companies that exist more than 20 years would not agree with you. If you have appropriate equipment, Clean room, knowledge and experience you can open hard drives and be very successful with recovery. The drive in this video survived and we use it as a donor.
