Those are amethyst crystals! There's many different colors including almost black called smokey crystals it's interesting because depending where their from the elements can drastically change the colors!

@@bs-vo1ii Knott's Berry Farm was great place to go spend the day & was different from Dis'land & the like! Knott's was fun of a unique type when I was growing up in L.A. in the 60's! Loved that place so much! And yes, the thing of picking your own rock & they'd break it open for you & you got to take it home... 8 am pretty sure that's what got me into my lifelong love of rocks...all kinds of rocks! To this day, I take walks on a beach, river, anywhere, & I come back with "rocks in pockets"! Friends jokingly say that's my Indian name...😀 I'm cool with that. Couple friends have been kind enuff to polish 'em for me in tumbler in past, but now I am finally getting my own rock tumbler! So excited! Am sure to come home from OR Coast with many "rocks in pockets"...& Tote bags...car doors... + any other nooks & crannies! At age 63, am finally coming home with my own tumbler to polish my rocks & am so excited!

I grew up in L.A., going to Busch Gardens & Knotts Berry Farm as a kid growing up in 1960's-70's. Disneyland was reserved for multiple "A's" on year-end report cards. 😁 I remember going to Magic Mountain 1st day it opened (a preview?), but it was so disappointing (as a kid) cuz' most of rides weren't even there yet. I remember a ride up to top of a 'space needle', to look 360° around...BORING! To me, it was like taking elevator with a view, to top of (what?) to "see for miles" (who cares?). Adults liked it, I was bored stiff. Maybe if they'd had a slide to get back down, would be scary/cool?! Magic Mtn had another 'opening day' after some rides & fun stuff were open. It was better ~ introduced the idea of 1 Entry Ticket that let you ride everything, much as you want, all day long! Disney had ticket book back then, with 1-5 stars/levels of rides & tickets. Had to buy supplement tickets to ride on more 5🌟 rides...the best & biggest rides had just 1 ticket per book. I grew up thinking EVERY city had a Disneyland, Harlem Globetrotters & a Universal Studios. My parents liked Busch Gardens tours (tram) best cuz' grown-ups got sm cups of beer for free at end of tour. I liked panning for gold at Knott's - best thing - & bringing home jelly made the fun last, as long as jelly did. Years later I learned that my little bottles of "gold" in water from each trip were just "fools gold" ~ did not matter to me 1 bit!! Great place to be a kid back then -- many places to go, different things to do! I have only been back as adult to Disney & Universal (my Dad was SFX Editor there). I imagine the "flavor" of places like Knott's Berry Farm & Busch Gardens have turned into "just another big Amusement Park", so I'd rather keep them as in my memories. Wow! That was fun ride down memory lane! Thanks for my smiles 2day! 60's & 70's (not 80's😉) were 👍😄👍!!!

The only real danger from using the saw is if the blade broke, i have never had a blade break on me in the many years i have been cutting. These blades are dull, they use the diamond layer to scrape away the material, they are not like a normal saw blade. The geode cracker however is way too messy and far more dangerous than the saw which is why i dont use one.

You kind of just know when you see one. If you've ever seen a few un cracked specimens you sortt just have a look too them. They're sort of just rounded unnaturally. Like a river rock might be round but they're usually evenly rounded or oblong but these are round like I imagine an air bubble that got stuck in lava would form. Or imagine if you took the moon and instead of having craters they were the opposite. Like big bubbles in mud about to pop but then got stuck and never popped. Once you've held a few you'll just know when you see one. Next time you see a nice Geode just don't admire the inside. Turn it around and inspect the back of it. It'll help you be able to see what they look liike.

imagine you have a smooth black wall ok? now medium-gray colored rock cut it perfectly in half and stick the smooth side against the wall now you see this rough gray blob in your otherwise perfect wall of black... it looks out of place against all that black right? that's how they find these when mining too the outer shell looks different in color and texture from the rock and other sediments it's surrounded by plus as you chip away at the sediments they actually separate from the geode itself in some cases.

look up Dan Hurd Prospecting he makes KZfaq videos while he's out in the field actually mining and collecting all sorts of gem stones and precious metals and geodes I think some of his videos would help you understand the things you would hope to see

The only way to have an idea of whether you have a geode or thunder egg is weight but you dont truly know until you cut/break them open.

Thundereggs are similar to a filled geode, that is formed within rhyolitic volcanic ash layers and opposed to geodes have agate-filled nodules, that is minerals in-filled during its formation cooling to create a microcrystalline structure. Geode is a geological secondary formation within sedimentary and volcanic rocks including common crystals include quartz, agate, jasper, gypsum, chalcedony, hematite, dolomite and calcite. - Differences of Quartz Varieties I believe the location, size, crystal habit/structure (crystallography) and possibly its luster. For more nuanced differences you may have to look towards reflectance, absorption, cleavage which can be looked up on mindat or IGS.
