Thanks for the tutorial Thomas, you have some good map resources in the US. One thing on declination, if magnetic north is 10deg W of grid north, I believe you need to enter it as a negative value? - the help on OOM does not actually define the direction. In my location it is less then 1deg now, but 10deg makes a big difference.

This tutorial was very helpful while I am beginning a first mapping project. However, it confused me when the rotation was performed for magnetic north. In Maryland you would need to rotate a map or image clockwise to get the magnetic north-south lines oriented vertically. Was the demonstration incorrect to rotate them counterclockwise?

Happy you did this tutorial. Will be great to share it with young coaches here in MN. Question: can you import all backgrounds and draw and everything, and deal with declination of everything all at once at the end?

I may have missed it but why didn't you take the opportunity 1) to trim the area wanted in Open Street Map and 2) to convert the OSM symbols to orienteering symbols as soon as the map was imported to Open Orienteering Mapper? Also the snipping tool is useful and quick but I believe if the orthoimagery had been downloaded it could be imported as a geo-referenced template, just a suggestion. Not sure about the UTM zone issue but I thought 18S ran through Chile and Peru.

cant find out how to turn on all of those fancy map symbols (streets, water, trails, etc) is my install missing something?

When creating a new map (File --> New), you should be able to choose a symbol set. Options I see are Empty symbol set, Course_Design_10000, ISMTBOM_10000, etc. I think the ISM.. sets have the symbols I was using in the demo.

Also, under the Symbols menu, you can turn the Symbol window on and off.

thanks! it looks like i didnt choose a symbol set when i started. all good now!
