@efreeze287 3rd mode of the major scale, if you start from the third note in Ab major (which is C) you're in phrygian mode (C phrygian)
@jtoddmusic7090
@jtoddmusic7090 3 ай бұрын
@@efreeze287 And to spell that scale out: C - Db - Eb - F - G - Ab - Bb - C
3 ай бұрын
If anyone is having problems understanding why Ab is used when in C, it's because this lesson is based on borrowing chords from the Phrygian mode. C Phrygian is the 3rd mode of Ab major, so they use C (from the key of C) as a starting point, then use the rest as if we suddenly switched to the key of Ab, playing the rest of the progression with chords that correspond to the harmonized Ab major scale, resolving back to C in the end. So, in the first example, the I IV V vi progression in C would be Cmaj7 Fmaj7 G7 and Amin7. But doing the modal interchange the I IV V vi would now become Cmaj7 Dbmaj7 (the 4th chord, not from C, but from the harmonized Ab major scale) Eb7 (the 5th chord from the harmonized Ab major scale) and finally Fmin7 (the 6th chord from the harmonized Ab major scale). Then it resolves to C. Hope that helps someone.

It's incredible once it clicks! Very practical. Basically, if you know all your roman numerals (I chord, V chord, etc) you just sub everything but the tonic for that same roman numeral in the key of Ab, which is the bVI of C. The tonic's root is still in that key, so even when you're going out, something's in. (....Reading that back, I'm not sure that made any sense lol sorry)

So basically what is happening.. The progression is I-IV-V-vi-I and Adam says everything goes to Ab but the tonic. Means now we will play C and rest of the chords means (4-5-6 chords) in the key of Ab which gives us Db-Eb-Fm and then we land back to C major.. you can use the same concept for the rest of the progressions in this video. And since this is Ab (C becomes Phrygian mode) so now if you want to explore you can change the mode of C to maybe C Dorian and now you are in the key if Bb. You can try the same chord progression and now they will be C - Eb - F - Gm - C. This is wildly subtle yet the concept just went under my radar.. one of the most beautiful lessons.. Thank you Adam and Open studio ❤
