Great to hear Helio teaching how to play bossa nova on piano authentically. Glad that he covers how bossa nova derives from the samba, with the bass performing the function of the surdo drum. 👍

Thanks Helio for a very informative and carefully paced lesson. A note on the beauty yet simplicity of guitar voicings: Back when I was studying jazz guitar at a conservatory, one of my teachers told me that the guitar has a richer sound per note (more harmonics) than the piano. Therefore a simple triad would always sound richer on a guitar. You may want to look into that.

I like to play the verse to Corcovado chorus ! The ending has a deceptive chord on the Joao Gilberto recording with Stan Getz but only a 4 bar tag!

An important question overlooked is what about playing with a guitarist who is clearly stating this rhythm pattern. The question is do you as a pianist double it in unison or do something else? I believe either way will work. In a duo you can trade the job back-and-forth. In a band setting with bass, guitar, and drums I personally prefer not doubling the guitarist pattern. I would play voicings mostly as longer note pads with with some syncopations but less frequent than the guitarist and I would try and decorate or “fill” in the gaps melodically (when the lead melody rests). This is similar to how the video explained using the right hand to fill in under the melody. No need to overplay.

Will help a lot if you hear a lot of joao Gilberto ,an job in. and try to absorb the foundations ... its very clean and ambiguous the choices of Gilberto .... you can check out some materials from Chediak, with very precise notations......
