Necrodancer actually answers one of your hot take questions from the previous video - by making the levels with a time constraint that you can’t circumvent, you can design the track without needing it to loop. The balance of this song is such a cool contrast to most of the other tracks to this point in the game.

Yes, in Necrodancer, the song IS the level, just like in something like DDR or Guitar Hero. Maybe even more so, since in Necrodancer the song is the only part of the level that isn't randomized.

Necrodancer has some absolutely brilliant melody lines, love this breakdown, Marco! You could consider doing an analysis of the stage 3 themes, each of which have two alternate versions of the same song! (A Cold Sweat / A Hot Mess) We’d love to see hear your thoughts on how they convey the same/opposing feelings through different instrumentation!

Omg I'm so excited to see any content related to Crypt of the Necrodancer! I listen to the full soundtrack _very_ often while I work, it's one of my favorite game OSTs out there (here though I suck at the actual game 😅) Btw, as you are an opera singer, I would *highly* recommend you check out Nicolas Daoust covers of the shopkeeper versions of the soundtrack; he's actually what made me interested in anything similar to this kind of "singing", and incidentally, your channel ^^ * I'm not asking for a reaction, (even though it of course would be very fun), but I think you'd find it pretty cool! ^^

To me this track sounds like a night out in a jazzy urban center. You're walking down the main street mall in the twilight, warm storefronts and bars and food trucks, well-dressed people walking along having a good time. Maybe you're with a friend, who is showing you around for the first time. But there's some darker alleys, a whiff of seedier underpinnings. You get a warning: don't look too deep, don't rock the boat. Enjoy the vibes and it'll all be alright. We're having a good time right? Just stay on the main street.

6:01 You can immediately tell it's a Danny B song right there, this rising motif in the melody sounds almost exactly like one of the songs in Super Meat Boy which was also composed by him (I think it was one of the dark worlds, probably the Hospital, but I can't recall). I love seeing that kind of musical idea being carried to other places like they were loosely connected somehow, even though they share nothing alike (except for the composer).

The track name Portobellohead is simply a conjunction of Portobello (the mushroom) and portishead (the bristol-based trip-hop band from the 90's). Most of the tracks from that portion of the soundtrack is themed around mushrooms, reflecting the stages quite well.

By the way, my biggest and simplest tip for getting better at Necrodancer is to always do an action on every single beat 100% of the time no matter what, no exceptions. There's some complicated internal game engine reasons why skipping beats is bad, but building this habit was what helped me get really good and consistent at the game.

Hi Marco, there was this steam sale a few days ago and they sold a masterpiece of a song and you even get Civilization VI for free with it. The song is called "Sogni di Volare" and it's the main menu theme. I literally was over half an hour in the main menu and was in awe (and in tears (a bit)). Maybe check it out, when you feel like it. Have a great day!

i really hope you stream this game, or at least react to some more of the OST's like boss themes, or just other tracks in general. there's also many variations of these tracks made by different people (main OST is Danny B, but there's like 8 others) and they are all official and can be changed in the settings based on what character you use. my favourites are Danny B (original), A-Rival (more electronic), and Joules (metal/rock).

Crypt of the Necrodancer has amazing music. Just all of it. The original and the official covers like FamilyJules' metal. If you haven't, it is worth listening to the shopkeepers vocals, you can find edits on KZfaq. It is very well done

I hoped Marco would hear the version with the shopkeeper (who sings along the melody like an opera singer). BTW the music of all the normal levels have a shopkeeper version.

Necrodancer is such a good game honestly - I remember picking it up waaay back when and it's still probably my favorite indie roguelike-style game I bought the soundtrack like, almost immediately and I've listened to it semi-regularly ever since

NecroDancer is a very simple concept - roguelike where have to move to the beat of the music - but is FANTASTIC in its execution. It's definitely challenging, but can be very addicting as well. They also play a bit with various musical themes in the game. You have the first floor set which is more traditional electronic dance music, the second which is all funk and groove, the third which plays between hot (rock) and cold (synth), and the fourth which just goes HARD, and then all the bosses are plays on different themes as well, mixing gameplay and musical style together. Haven't gotten around to playing the DLC yet but just hearing this music sends me right back to high school when I first picked this game up... wait it was that long ago? Wow...

Danny B's work is fantastic, no lie. I can just sit and listen to the Necrodancer soundtrack (with shopkeeper!). It's also a huge shame his tracks for Binding of Isaac (flash version) didn't carry over to the Rebirth release.

Yes, I've wanted you to react to CotND soundtrack for forever, it's so good. If you ever get to the 3rd floor music, it would be awesome if you reacted to hot and cold versions in one video. Or an entire stream listening to the whole OST would be amazing as well. But the funniest thing ever would be if you reacted to shopkeeper versions
