I feel 7/8 in the beginning guitar riff and 6/8 when the drum beat changes still in the verse. However the count for the pre chorus is a 4/4 feeling to me with the rimshots, and the chorus is a "4/4" feeling as well but with 5 bars before it repeats. A lot of the djent type of music does a lot of over the bar type of riffs. The way the time changes are so seamless, keeps me coming back to this song.

Just FYI. It alternates between 3/4 and 4/4 during the first two verses, another way of saying that is that it's at 7/8 all the time, but it does not go from 7/8 to 6/8.

@@janfransson5910 Time stamps for this video not the original. 0:10-0:46 7/8 I understand your point about counting it as 3/4 and 4/4 alternating here if you want, no argument. 0:46-1:06 6/8 Here however its a swing type feel. 7 doesn't fit, its only six. 4:23-4:32 I count as 4/4 but could be subdivided as 3/8 and 5/8 repeating if that feels better for ya.

This studio session is basically a studio recording for the "at the time" new drummer, Vlad, so the vocals are the album version with layers, etc. Tatiana is a Pisces, and the soft/harsh vocals are reflecting the duality of the two sides of her personality, along with the fish references and her plugs in her earlobes have fish on them. The most common follow ups to Pisces are one of a couple live concert performances, like "Perrenial" at Wacken 2019, or "Who is gonna be the one" which I believe was at an Atlas Festival. Others go directly to her One Take Vocal performance of "Judgement & Punishment", which is just the camera on her singing in a booth at her home the entire time, so you can see what she's doing as she sings.

Yeah, Eugene said in an interview that live vocals have a slight delay on it, but studio vocals are doubled and the harsh vocals have a pitch shifter and slight distortion on it which seems to be par for the course when producing this style of music. If you listen to concert footage you get the raw experience of her extreme vocals.

@@rikardottosson1272 - I've watched every interview they've ever done, and unless it was in a written interview, I don't recall ever hearing Eugene saying that they added distortion to the vocals in this or in any other song. What for? It would just remove the clarity of Tatiana's enunciation when growling and that's something she would never agree with. And it's not like she needs it, really.

Welcome to Jinjer. The band is amazing and Tati is a vocal goddess. The song is about the duality of the Pisces personality. (Refer to the yin-yang symbol for pisces). This song is pretty much all about Tati. How she is usually giving, kind and selfless. But she can be self critical and insecure and shy. But today she's going to be a friend to herself. Meaning she's gonna cut herself some slack instead of being overtly self critical. The harsh parts refer to the walls she puts up like armor. ie fish scales look like chain mail glistening in the sun. Fish being the sign for Pisces. Sometimes she can be fun and full of life and sometimes she can be self destructive.

Two of the band members are Pisces. The singer, Tatiana and the Bassist, Eugene. Both of them contributed lyrically to this song but Tati is the main lyricist for most of their songs. Yes, this song is about being a Pisces and embraces the duality of the sign (one being brings life, another runs for death). Did you notice the little goldfish in her gauges? ( edit: the more a person listens to the harsh vocals the easier they are to understand. the ears and the brain will teach itself to recognize what's being said just like when you learn a new language)

"Scale armor blaze...": I believe this line is actually "Scale armor belies virgin innocence". I don't know if this might help with drawing meaning from the lyrics, but thought I'd offer that as a possible alternative line. Also, I love that you pointed out the lack of first person pronouns (I/me/my) in the chorus! Welcome to the Jinjer family! :) The song is about the mythos of the PISCES sign and what it teaches us. The back and white balanced within the same being, the multiple sides of our own personality, the eternal struggle within us, the battle between light and dark that makes us all human. Every musician in Jinjer is a master of their craft. Vlad, the drummer is an accomplished classical pianist for crying out loud :) LOL Taty is simply mind blowing, her growling technique is second to none, but her sultry first register combined with her powerful belts just makes it for a complete singer. She is also a great poet and she brings that into the fold for Jinjer. I am yet to hear one bad song by them, these guys are simply the BEST "new" metal band around right now in my humble opinion. Their songs mix complex time signatures with beautiful and catchy melodies with POP sensibilities. Add in absolutely brutal passages and it is a tough combination to beat. I would highly recommend you listen to wallflower next.

Great reaction! So glad you enjoyed it! Jinjer is really unlike anyone else in the business right now. They are a full package with near perfect synergy. A general term for growling is harsh vocals, which can include the low false cord roar and the higher vocal fry scream which is more common in "screamo". Jinjer calls themselves progressive metalcore and groove metal. There are so many good songs, I would recommend "Perennial" live at Wacken, "Judgement and Punishment" one take, (as you can see Tati close up), and "Teacher, Teacher". The drummer is Vlad, and they made this video to showcase him and really was a perfect fit. He is actually a classically trained pianist. Tati btw is a Pisces, and the chorus symbolism draws directly to the Ying and yang nature of the sign. Can't wait to see more from you soon!

I agree about the point of entry. Pisces is the gateway drug. And I know the band themselves don't regard it as one of their favorite songs. Maybe they got tired of the same reactions over and over, everyone freaking on Tatiana's vocal duality, when the video was meant to showcase new drummer Vlad. But to me Pisces is a classical level composition that perfectly highlights the stylistic contrasts of the band, establishing a mood, subtly building tension leading into the shock of the chorus; with peaks and valleys, each peak cresting subtly higher and higher into the final payoff of the last crescendo as emeralds are ripped away. It's an emotional rollercoaster, and the lyrics express and follow the duality perfectly. For me Pisces is the perfect distillation of Jinjer's sound and style. Not their heaviest song by a long shot, nor their most complex. But one of their more expressive and well-crafted distillations of their niche. Contrast.

I saw them live in December in the 1st concert that I had been to in “Damn, I’m Old!” years and seeing them again on July 31st while still going on the slow deep dive I’ve voluntarily taken. -The two “sides” remind me of the song “This Love” by Pantera. Both start with the character that the vocalist is portraying being reserved and maybe a bit unsure of what they’re wanting to say. When it comes to the chorus, that’s when the other side comes out and takes over. With the second verse, they go back to that first side. However, they’re not as timid and are more sure of what they’re thinking. Great storytelling. -No matter how many times I hear this song, I have to stop whatever I’m doing at “Pisces swimming through the river.” That belt will never not get me. Tatiana is such an amazing and versatile vocalist. -As I’ve become more and more of a fan, I can’t help but see comparisons between them and Queen. The first way is that both have vocalists with incredible talent who possess a charisma that draws the audience’s attention. However, when you listen to them and get past her amazing vocals, you realize just how good the rest of the band is. You realize that this is a band and not just a singer with a backing band. The other way is music philosophy. Years ago, I was riding around with someone when “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” came on the radio. When the person I was with asked who it was, I told them it was Queen, which drew a double take from them. They said that it didn’t sound like Queen which made me think “What does Queen sound like?” They went all across the musical spectrum and did it so well. With Jinjer, I’ve had that same feeling. They’re labeled as Metal/Metalcore but incorporate a variety of influences in a masterful way. -While “Pisces” was the song that got my attention(I work hard not to say that it “hooked” me), what made me a fan was “Bad Water.” As I eluded to, the other songs I checked out weren’t connecting with me and I almost became just a fan of the song but not the band. What I was looking for another “Pisces” and I wasn’t getting it. One day, I checked out the official live video for “Bad Water.” After listening to it, the first thing I thought was “I get it now.”

The band is Roman on guitar, Eugene on bass and Vlad on drums and, of course, Tatiana on vocals. They are from the Ukraine. Tati is a Pisces. She wrote most of the lyrics but asked Eugene for help to finish it. He has stated that he tried to write about Tatiana but felt in the end what he wrote was like a self-confession. I believe the last six lines were his contribution. I think the song is about a duel personality with the dark side influenced by abusive relationships (perhaps).

I am deffinitely in agreement with everybody suggesting Judgement and punishment (one take vocal performance) as your next Jinjer reaction. Also, if you feel like exploring these type of vocals/music may I reccomend Spiritbox (songs Holy Roller, Rule of Nines, Constance). Courtney, their vocalist, has a lot of amazing one take performance videos too.

That was a great reaction Jess - thank you. There are so many good Jinjer tracks that you can't go wrong. For what you want though, the One Take Performance of Judgement And Punishment is easily the best thing to watch, since (I suspect) it was done specifically for vocal coach reactors to use, being an uninterupted close-up video of Tati singing the whole song. You probably don't want to do the same song twice, but just for your own kicks, you should also watch the official video of Judgement And Punishment to see Tati having WAAAY too much fun as a woods-witch. My favorite is the official video for Teacher, Teacher, and another good one is the live video of Who Is Gonna To Be The One, which gives you a good idea of her live stage presence, and also just how eclectic the band's music can be. Also, some absolutely killer bass licks from Eugene...

First and foremost, if that’s your voice at the end, I want to hear more of that. Second, I love this very respectful reaction. I have an intense fascination for opera; I think it’s a wonderful enigma. So it is quite a treat to hear what an opera vocalist thinks of one of my favorite metal videos. This band is from Ukraine and they toured very close to non-stop for their First Seven Years - going through personnel changes in the process. I got into Jinjer’s music at one of the hardest times: post-divorce. I never get sick of reactions to this one-take play through of “Pisces”. The reactions just keep coming! It’s such a beautiful song.

Wow, thoughtful analysis - respect! (And as a musician and theory geek was happy to hear you pick out the Sol - or min 9th - chord the guitarist played during the verses:) Jinjer is one of the best progressive metal bands in the game now. What’s more they’re all essentially war refugees from east Ukraine which makes them that much more special.

I've heard this song literally more than a hundred times, and have seen as many reactions to it. Your's is one of the best! Your overall analysis of all aspects of this song was really really good (I just can't remember having heard so much intelligent reflexion of all these aspects). Especially your thoughts at the beginning that there has to come "something heavier" due to Tatis looks - 😂😂😂. And then of course your surprise painted on your face when Tatis dark growling voice starts! I appreciate too that you got into the lyrics - too bad that you didn't come to the part at the end where this "innocent virgin" little fish is slaughtered by those "handsome butchers"- for me a very poetic and at the same time very true picture of our lovely/cruel paradise/hell earth that we are condemned to live in. This becomes an even heavier touch when you consider that Jinjer is a Ukrainian band and what is happening there right now. Gives me some feeling of "shivering inside" too. . Congratulations to your reaction!👍👍👍😀And of course: You are a Pro who knows everything about voice and singing (growling and harsh vocals taking apart of course) - I bet it would be joyful hear you singing!

I absolutely love your analysis that's coming from your operatic training. Pisces the fish has a duality and that's what the lyrics denote. One brings life. The second rush to death. I hope that this helps makes sense of the lyrics.

Lovely reaction. I can hear/feal you are knowledgeable. There is so much to discover in the works of this miracle of a band. I think the vocaliste is, together with male college Michael Akerfeldt, one of the best and most digestable growlers in the business. Because of them I can now listen to this form of vocal technique without reservations. Btw: The more I listen to 'Pisces', the more I think it's not just their super viral click bait shocker, but also their most brilliant song in every way. Thank you.

7:10 You feel the work needed to grawl properly, without destroying your vocal chords despite they are "Heavy duty" for this exercise. And yes, she can litterally grawl at anyone, anywhere, anytime, that's her level of mastering the technique and the instrument (it is her voice, of course !) ❤ And just to say, switching from sweet to grawl or inverse is an exercise by itself 😅 12:40 Yes, you say it right, it is that contrast making a great rock ballad ! Grawling with grace is not given to everyone, thank you for refreshing Jinjer in my deficient memory ❤👍🖖

Loving the Jinjer reaction, I'm a huge fan of the band. Keep 'em coming. She uses a vocal technique common in metal called growling. It uses the false vocal folds to create distortion. It takes a long time to learn properly and Tati is one of the best. And the guys are incredible. I saw them live in Atlanta in December and they tore it up. And she does that flawlessly all night. You need to hear them live, I'd recommend "Perennial" (live at Wacken 2019).

I heard that Tatiana writes her lyrics in Russian since that’s her first language and then she translates them into English, which I think kinda gives it a really unique style!

Great video! I think you made every Jinjer fan grin when you said you thought a change was coming. We knew you still weren't expecting THAT. I don't know where "screamo" came from, but I just refer to the vocal techniques using distortion that you often hear in metal as "harsh vocals". There are different flavors. Some sound like screaming, some like growling, sometimes there's a mix. Tatiana can do both, which you kind of hear in this one. She is more growly in the chorus, but the final line is much closer to a scream. Pisces is kind of different from most of Jinjer's music because the point of the song is to highlight the two sides of Tatiana's thoughts and feelings. I think her clean vocals are slightly more poppy than in other songs and you've only heard a portion of her harsh vocals. I'm sure there are already tons of comments reminding Perennial live at Wacken. It's a good one, but there are plenty of other videos you'll enjoy too. Her one take performance of Judgement and Punishment will give you a clear look at her body as she sings.
