If you listen to their disney princess medely, the altos are so rich in that section of pocahontas. So thick and rich you need a knife to cut it.

I love that I’m getting an entire music theory lesson to one of my absolute favorite Voctave performances! EJ’s 24 second sustained belt (with upward modulation!) slays me every time. I would be so happy if you did their Mary Did You Know, because it actually makes me cry for how beautiful it is.

So glad you're highlighting Voctave - they are often overlooked but so, so good. Please do more of their work, they are insanely gifted. Also, I know Christmas is over but an absolute must is their cover of Mary, Did You Know featuring Mark Lowry (who wrote the lyrics) and really captures the song like no one else can. (Mark is seated as he has MS and yet, his tone and emotion and ability to hold a note is unbelievable.)

THANK YOU for going in depth!! Voctave is in the same vein of pentatonix... their tone, entrances and cut offs are so professional and precise they sound just as good if not better live with very little to no post production!! Someone below (earlier) noted that Jamey Ray is the founder and sole arranger. I remember seeing a video that quoted him and his relationship to the group. When asked about his arranging style and skill, he said that he selects singers with qualities he knows, and then arranges the music to take full advantage of their individual and combined skills. In effect his arrangements are tailored predominately to the specific performers. And the results are spectacular.

Yours is the first reaction I have EVER SEEN to Voctave ,with immersion and analysis while thoroughly enjoying the piece. You can tell how much music itself means to you. Your Joy is contagious. Their dynamic control is absolutely incredible. They go from a large full sound to a soft delicate sound in an instant with no difficulty. That's hard enough to do alone and they are doing it in a group with upwards of 9-10 people on top of everything else they are doing. I would give anything to see them live.

Wow, this didn't seem like a 28 minute video to me at all. I find your way of taking things apart and explaining them fascinating. I wish I had teachers like you when I was in school 50 years ago, I might have been a better student. You always look like you are slapping someone across the face when a particular part of a song grabs you one way or another LOL, that's very cool. I was a tad lost during your music theory part because I didn't have any of that in school, I was in the school orchestra and marching band so our focus was on playing and performing, not theory. I like how you explain the voice and how it works, and I like how you explain why singers make the choices they do. I really enjoy your videos and I hope you continue to make them just like this. Stay safe and know that I appreciate your effort and time spent making these videos.

I did 2+ years as a music major before I had to drop out and quit playing due to an injury. I never did truly understand music theory, largely because I'm a mathematics idiot, but I enjoy listening to someone who does understand it discuss it in an educational manner.

I'm a soprano too - and I too LOOOOVE bases and altos! I like saying that a choir is like an ice cream sundae - sopranos and tenors are the ice cream, the vanilla, the old reliable - the bases and altos are the chocolate and caramel toppings, they give it flavor, dimension, and texture! And the Baris? The sprinkles. We love them because they make everything complete, if not better!

Love this reaction. As a classically trained tenor, you put this into words many professors may not be able to. Thanks for your information and a great reaction video. (PS: I’ve been blessed to see Voctave perform live a few times and this recording is very indicative of their live performances. This is recorded at the chapel at Berry College in Orlando, FL, which is where I saw them live first. (The live acoustics are delicious!)

Finally a reaction from a pro that not only tells us about what we are listening to but how it it’s done with an example. As someone who was an athlete growing up, music was never my strength. I hear it once explained but I don’t know the lingo so when you use it and then give an example it’s like I’m in class. Thank you.

Jess, the way you explain what you hear is refreshing. You explain now to me, why it is that I am in awe of certain harmonies. As an amateur organist and choir singer I know a little of harmony and singing, but much of it stays hidden for me. Due to the fact that I heard this recording over 50 times before I saw your explanation, you enlightened a lot to me. Also, your enthusiasm is infectious! Thank you!

Voctave is so pro level a cappella singing and arranging, and really takes some next level knowledge of music theory and experience to be able to break down what they do. Most people can’t and are just left speechless......but You... GOD.... where did u study😍😍😍😍

Thanks Marcus!! I love math and music theory/reading music is like math to me. I studied at University of California, Berkeley (Undergrad) and San Francisco Conservatory of Music (Grad). I will say majority of my music theory knowledge came from my undergrad studies.

Your breakdown of this song was amazing. I am honestly as blown away from your breakdown, as I am by Voctave's version of this song...and this song sung by them, is in my top 5 of songs that I just love to listen to because of the vocals. Your "reaction" was like nothing I have every experienced before, because I felt I was learning about why these vocals were so beautiful...rather than being told they were beautiful, "simply because Im a vocal coach or a singer", which is unfortunately the norm with other "reactions" on youtube. Your expertise is so far beyond me, that I couldn't even see yours with a telescope, yet not once did you ever make me feel that way. It was like I was learning "with" you and not from you, even though it was obvious you were teaching and explaining. Sincerely, thank you for this.

This was super cool, I love when people geek out about their passions; brings me along for the ride in the excitement! All of their most recent album (The Corner of Broadway & Main Street Vol. 2) is amazing, but I'd probably pick out Someday or You Will be Found as favorites.

I LOVE Voctave! I would love to see your reaction to their version of Beauty and the Beast with Sandi Patty. It’s often overlooked, but one of my favorites from them! I also appreciated your explanation of the tenor voice. As a tenor myself, it is very easy for a tenor to sound strained on the higher notes. Very informative video!

Informative! Still not sure how any of your reaction videos could be blocked for not being educational,,,, Love Voctave, but this is my favorite from them due to EJ's insane lead vocals. Not to say the rest of them were anything but stellar of course.

ETA: Love that you started with the alto parts... I feel Altos and baritones all-too-often just don't get the love/ respect they deserve. It's too common for people to focus on those standout sopranos and basses... and those rare countertenors and contraltos.

@@darquemode1165 Oh yes, I love altos. I wish I was one when I was in choir for so many years. I definitely think it would have improved my musicianship. That being said, I am doing my best to focus on those inner harmonies as much as I can. It's really hard though, especially the baritone/tenor lines. For me at least. Thanks for the nice comment!

Awesome Reaction! I really enjoyed all your input. As a fellow singer, I have had many of the same reactions to their songs. Some of those chords just make me want to melt. I hope you'll do more reactions to their songs. I did get a chance to hear them live a little over a year ago, right before Covid hit. It was amazing to hear them live. They really are just as good live as they are in the recordings. You don't know how many times I had tears rolling down my cheeks when they sang. Their harmonies are so good. Some of my favorites songs are Mary Did You Know with Mark Lowry, Disney Love Medley, Someone Like You, and from their newest CD, You will be Found. There are many, so any you react to will be great! Thanks again for the fun and educational reaction!

As an opera singer, I'm sure you have heard outrageous performances. But here I see you almost breathless as you experience this magnificent work of art. Tells me I wasn't over-valuing this. Of course, the whole group is flawless, but EJ just soared here, and I don't understand how this was possible. Not only holding a note forever, but pushing it up at the end?!?!? Wow. Words escape me.

Beautiful group. They remind me of a group that I've been a fan of for years which is the Discovery Singers. They sing all hymns. One of my favorites is Christ We Do All Adore Thee.

EJ is on par with Tenor Tim Waurick of the acapella quartet Vocal Spectrum who can hold and sustain a note for 30 seconds plus. Now 2022 I will finally get to see Voctave in person next month in Columbia, MO.
